May 11 to 19: Character education focus of Pinecrest production
Students from the Drama/Film Club at Pinecrest Public School have written scripts on cyberbullying, teasing, taunting, rumors, physical aggression and exclusion. On May 11th, they will see their work come to life on stage and screen when the school begins a six-day run of its latest and most ambitious production.
The production includes a live performance on character development set in the 1980s that focuses on a number of traits – trustworthiness, caring, empathy, courage, tolerance, ambition, responsibility, citizenship, fairness, loyalty, and respect. It also features the student-produced film “We’re Not Gonna Take It” which highlights five chapters – Prom Night, The Cyberbully, Pretty in Pink, Volleyball Madness, and Picture Not So Perfect.
“The Pinecrest School Council and parents have been extremely supportive of this production every step of the way,” says Principal Jacques Mantha. “They helped during film shoots and worked alongside students to create the wonderful backdrops for the set.” He adds: “We all look forward to the launch of this production, which will provide teachable moments on timely topics.”
“The sets, costumes, acting, and dances for the live production are amazing,” says teacher Scott Zoldy, the Film Producer/Director. He adds: “Some of the scenes for the film use a green screen. Parents who got a sneak preview of the trailer for the film thought the opening sequence was stunning, so we are very excited to share our final work with our school community and the public at large.”
The Pinecrest Film Club will be featured on CKLU FM 96.7 with host Robert Kirwan on Monday, April 27th at 6 pm. Three script writers/actors and Director Zoldy will be in studio to talk about the film, which has been in production since the start of the school year.
More than 1,200 students from Rainbow Schools will view the production during matinées. “Many of our sponsors will be present to show their support for character development,” says Zoldy. “This year’s production would not have been possible without their support, so we certainly thank them for their generosity.”
The public is invited to evening performances on Tuesday, May 12th, Wednesday, May 13th and Thursday, May 14th at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. Tickets will be on sale at Pinecrest Public School, 1650 Dominion Drive in Hanmer, and Prom Music, 255 King Street in Sudbury, as of Monday, April 27th.
