Levack Public School will celebrate Food Revolution Day on Friday, May 16, 2014, a campaign supported by world-renowned chef and healthy food advocate, Jamie Oliver.
Staff from the Sudbury & District Health Unit will join students, parents and volunteers to prepare a healthy dish from scratch, using vegetables from the Northern Fruits and Vegetables Program and other fresh ingredients.
Food skills and fun with cooking will be the focus of a presentation by a dietitian and a public health nurse.
Each classroom will receive the recipes of the day to take home. As a follow up, students will be invited to share a favourite family recipe for a Levack Public School Cookbook that will highlight the fun of cooking together.
Food Revolution Day will get students excited about preparing healthy dishes from scratch, educate them on the importance of balanced nutrition, and generate enthusiasm about cooking with their families.
“This global initiative, with the support of the Sudbury & District Health Unit, will have an impact on all students and extend into the home,” said Principal Stephen Winckel. “We are always looking for ways to promote healthy eating and making good choices.”
To complement Food Revolution Day, Levack Public School has invited the Health Unit to one of its School Council meetings to inform parents about the Nutrition Tool for Schools.
The school has also been working closely with Chartwells Food Services to provide students with healthy food alternatives in the cafeteria.
