May 19: Lockerby battles Greater Sudbury Police in Lip Sync Competition

Staff and students from Lockerby Composite School will face off with members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service during a lip sync competition to support the “Remembering Laura Cotesta, Kids Caring for Kids” Cancer Drive. The battle will take place on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 12 pm in the school’s auditorium. 

Three teams will compete – Greater Sudbury Police Service, Lockerby students, and teachers. Each team will perform two songs that will be judged by David Anselmo, CEO of Hideaway, Heather Downey, Vice-Principal of Sudbury Secondary School, and Norm McIntosh, music teacher and creator of Confederation Secondary School’s Evolutionary Band.

“This fun event will serve in memory of former student Laura Cotesta,” says Lockerby Composite School Principal Craig Runciman. “Laura started the campaign while she attended Lockerby and was fighting her own battle with cancer. She saw cancer only as an obstacle, one that she was determined to overcome.”

He added: “This event will bring together staff, students and members of the local community to recognize and honour Laura’s vision in a fun and meaningful way.”

Laura Cotesta viewed cancer as an opportunity to raise awareness and to fund a pediatric cancer care facility in Sudbury. Tired of travelling to Toronto for treatments and unwilling to wait for someone else to take action, Laura took up the challenge and, with the help of friends, founded the “Kids Caring for Kids” Cancer Drive. 

After realizing her dream of graduating from high school, Laura left Lockerby and subsequently passed away. Her quiet courage and perseverance remain her legacy.

Over the past 20 years, the Cancer Drive has raised nearly $800,000.

All proceeds from the event will support local pediatric cancer services through the Northern Cancer Foundation.
