will take centre stage to participate in the Franco-Rainbow competition. The lip sync contest with French songs will take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2015
at Valley View Public School.
Students in Grades 1 to 8 won the honour of competing in the Board-wide event by capturing first place at in-school competitions in primary, junior and intermediate divisions. Overall winners will be announced in three categories. There will also be a participation award in each division. First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded to winning groups in each of the five categories.
“Franco-Rainbow is one of many authentic experiences that serve to promote the French culture among our Core French and French Immersion students,” says Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. “Students not only explore French music, they also memorize French songs and hone their listening skills. In addition, they work in groups, which emphasizes oral communication and team building skills. And they get to practise their French by participating in an activity that is fast-paced and fun.”
The aim of the Core French program is to develop basic communication skills in French and an understanding of the nature of the language, as well as an appreciation of French culture in Canada and in other parts of the French-speaking world. The Core French program offers students the opportunity to develop a basic usable command of the French language that can be expanded through further study at the secondary school level.
French Immersion, which provides a balance of English and French instruction in Rainbow Schools, immerses students in the French language including cultural experiences. The French Immersion program provides students with the skills they need to communicate in a second language, thereby enhancing their ability to perform effectively and meet with success in a rapidly changing global economy.
