C.R. Judd Public School

8 Lincoln Street

671-5953

Michael Bellrose, Principal

This year’s Education Week theme is Building the Best Education System in the World.  With this in mind, staff and students at C.R. Judd Public School are planning several initiatives that will see individuals from the community, and students and staff at the school, come together in novel ways to increase student engagement and success.

Beginning this month, several students in Grade 7 and 8 will be selected to participate in a cross-grade mentoring and tutoring program designed to enhance the educational experience of primary and junior learners, as well as the experience of the intermediate students themselves.

Research has shown that students who “teach” other students have a stronger grasp of concepts learned, and express a greater willingness to improve their own understanding of ideas and skills in both language and mathematics.  Moreover, the relationships cultivated between intermediate students and their younger counterparts, through the mentoring and tutoring process, enriches the experience of everyone involved.

In addition to its academic benefits, the Peer Mentoring and Tutoring Program at C.R. Judd will provide participating students with skills and experience that can be used to secure volunteer positions within schools – as the students work toward accumulating 40 hours of community service required of all high school graduates in Ontario.

Students are also preparing laminated placemats highlighting this year’s theme – for use at a local Capreol eatery. And student-produced bookmarks will be distributed to patrons at the local public library. On a regular basis, the school will continue to recruit parents to come to the school to read with, and to, students.
