May 8: Evolutionary Bands 30th Anniversary Mothers Day Concert
When the Confederation Secondary School Evolutionary Band takes to the stage on Saturday, May 8th, 2010 for its annual Mother’s Day Concert, it will be history in the making. It has been 30 years since Music Director Norm McIntosh launched the group, which has earned national accolades over the decades.
The concert, which takes place at 7:30 pm in the gym at Confederation Secondary School, 1918 Main Street West in Val Caron, will kick off with the local band MAYDAY Mother. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and everyone is welcome to attend. Q92’s Holly Thorne will host the show. The public is invited to listen to Q92 for a chance to win tickets.
Tickets, at $12 each, are available from members of the band and crew, the main office at Confederation Secondary School, Jett Landry Music in Sudbury, and Home Hardware in the Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre. Tickets will also be available at the door. To ensure your seat at this must-see performance, be sure to purchase your tickets early. The Mother’s Day Concert sells out quickly.
Band Director Norm McIntosh has seen many changes since Evolutionary began when he joined the staff of Confederation Secondary School in 1980 as a music teacher. “The level of musicianship and technical expertise is extremely high this year for the 30th Anniversary Band, so we are celebrating this milestone in fine style. We look forward to another stellar performance by the band and crew as we present our annual tribute to mothers in our community.”
Evolutionary was recently in studio recording the original song "White Boy" that was written for the band last summer. The groove funk-style tune features guitars, bass, drums, congas, keys, vocals, trumpets, trombones, alto and tenor saxes. “The song builds on Evolutionary’s traditional rock repertoire and will be performed at the upcoming concert,” says McIntosh.
He adds: “This song will also be included on an album which features a cross-section of music from our Northern community.” Evolutionary is the only high school band participating in the recording project. They will join other local artists such as Andrew Lowe, Jeff Wiseman, The Blues Brothers, Terra Cain (Johnny Aho) and Larry Barriault, among others. Proceeds from the album will go to local food banks.
Evolutionary is a 23-piece rock band which includes four vocalists, a nine piece rhythm section, four trumpets, four trombones, two alto saxes and three tenor saxes. The band is supported by a 14-member stage crew.
As Action Sudbury’s ‘No Drinking and Driving” Band, Evolutionary has earned a solid reputation for its dynamic performances. The band tours from March until June, performing for more than 8,000 students per year.
Each show is a high energy, choreographed presentation with an exciting light display including lasers, strobes, smoke machines, video and intelligent lighting. The Band’s set runs 80 minutes and features a selection of top 40 hits including Fallout Boy, Bullet for my Valentine, Airbourne, Hinder, Green Day, and Shine Down. The band also performs classic rock tunes from Queen, Rolling Stones, and AC/DC.
