Winners of the Annual Kids’ Fish Art Contest were announced at the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show on February 8th, 2013. During the presentation, Jodie received a framed copy of her submission. She also won fishing gear from Lucky Strike Bait Works and classroom art supplies from STAEDTLER Mars. Jodie’s drawing will now be entered in the international category of the American Wildlife Forever Contest.
“We congratulate Jodie Brubacher for her fine artwork and thank teacher Dave Mitchell for organizing this artistic opportunity for our students,” said Pam DeMarco, Principal of Monetville Public School. “We are so proud that Jodie’s artwork will be featured on this year’s Young Angler’s Licence.”
Chinook salmon and longnose gar were the official fish of the 10th annual contest. Judges were looking for artwork that depicted these fish in their natural habitat. Along with their artwork, students were required to submit a one-page essay about the fish, its habitat, and how to protect it for future generations.
"To preserve the Longnose Gar for future generations, we should make sure that the streams, rivers, and shallow riffles are clear and not full of garbage so that they can go and do their spawning and more Longnose Gars can be born,” said Jodie Brubacher. “Also, we should be careful how much of the fish that we catch and kill. To make sure that the Longnose Gars have food, we have to protect the habitats of what it eats, too."
