MPP France Gélinas Honours Lively District Secondary School Student

SUDBURY – France Gélinas, MPP for Nickel Belt presented Katelyn Marshall, a senior student from Lively District Secondary School with the 2012 Leading Girls Building Communities Award this morning.

“It is young ladies like Katelyn that make our schools and communities better places.  It’s an honor for me to recognize her today” said Gélinas.

Miss Marshall is an exceptional young lady who displays strong leadership qualities and a flair for helping people around her.  In addition to being an outstanding student, Katelyn is an active member of the Lively District Secondary School’s Roots and Shoots group, she is President of the school’s Athletic Council and advocate for the Rainbow District School Board’s Gay and Straight Alliance.  She has also participated in fundraisers for the Wild at Heart Refuge Centre, schoolyard cleanups, used battery drives as well as being instrumental in a water conservation project at the school.  She has also taken on the role of student ambassador for the Light Up Costa Rica Solar/LED lighting project and has helped involve many other students in participating in this humanitarian effort.

The Leading Girls Building Communities Recognition Program acknowledges and celebrates girls who demonstrate exceptional leadership in working to improve the lives of others in their schools or communities.

Mrs. Gélinas presented Ms. Marshall with a scroll as well as a letter and certificate from the Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues.

“I would like to thank you Katelyn for all for your enthusiasm, time, efforts, energy and community spirit” said Gélinas.
