October 19 to 23: School Bus Safety Week

The Sudbury Student Services Consortium is pleased to announce that October 19-23 is School Bus Safety Week. Ontario utilizes 33 transportation consortia to coordinate school bus service for more than 850,000 students daily.Over 20,000 school bus routes take to Ontario’s roadways each instructional day to support student education.

School bus safety week provides an opportunity to talk to your kids about rules of the road and school bus safety. Whether you have kids traveling to school by bus or are a motorist in a school zone, everyone benefits from an increased focus on road safety, obeying posted speed limits and carefully observing pedestrians.

We would like to remind everyone how important it is to obey the law and come to a complete stop while the red signal-lights of a school bus are flashing. There is a maximum fine of $2,000 and a loss of 6 demerit points under the Highway Traffic Act for vehicle owners who choose to disobey the law and illegally pass a stopped school bus.

Throughout School Bus Safety Week, watch for social media messages tagged with #BusSafety15 as a way to engage your community in the discussion.

The capstone event for the week includes a School Bus Driver Appreciation Day, which will be celebrated on October 21st for the Espanola and Sudbury Districts drivers and on October 22nd for the Manitoulin Island drivers.Parents and guardians are encouraged to recognize their school bus driver with a simple thank you or acknowledgement of a job well done under often complex conditions.
