October 9: Churchill Public School celebrates Fall Harvest Feast

Churchill Public School will celebrate its 16th annual Fall Harvest Feast on Wednesday, October 9, 2013.
All the staff and students at Churchill attend the feast. The grades are mixed so that intermediate, junior and primary students are all eating together. Superintendents and trustees are also invited.
The feast gives students a sense of community by creating a family dinner atmosphere.  All the students contribute to the feast by donating a potato and a carrot. They also take turns peeling vegetables for the dinner. The staff and students in the Culinary Program at Collège Boréal are cooking the turkeys this year.
Parent volunteers help bring the event together. Some parents volunteer to cook vegetables. Others serve students the day of the feast. Parents also donate carrots, potatoes, desserts and lemonade. Those who volunteer at the feast also enjoy the dinner.
“Each class at Churchill assumes some responsibility for the feast,” says Principal Dave Farrow. Some classes make stuffing. Other classes take care of desserts. Some classes butter buns. Others slice pickles and celery sticks. “Some students provide beautiful artwork, centerpieces and napkin rings.” He adds: “Each student designs a placemat for this special day. The feast is a wonderful way to give thanks.”
Churchill Public School is home to some 450 students from JK to Grade 8.
