The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program allows Grade 11 and 12 students to train as registered apprentices while attending high school. The program is designed to introduce students to a career in skilled occupations, help students secure apprenticeship opportunities and encourage an early start toward a well-paid and satisfying career.
To date, close to 285 students in Rainbow Schools are enrolled in OYAP. “The strength of the program lies in the involvement of industry and community partners,” says Rainbow District School Board Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “Also important to the success of OYAP are the collaborative efforts, commitment, involvement and expertise of co-op education teachers, technological studies teachers and guidance personnel in Rainbow Schools.”
According to labour market statistics, opportunities for young people in the skilled trades will continue to grow. The industry will experience a shortage of apprentices and qualified people in a number of areas. Within the next few years, one third of all jobs in Canada will require individuals with a skilled trade or a college diploma.
Students in Rainbow Schools have the option of officially registering as apprentices in more than 150 skilled trade occupations through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program.
