Parents/guardians invited to learn the basics of emotion coaching
Parents/guardians in Rainbow Schools are invited to learn the basics of emotion coaching during a special presentation at Sudbury Secondary School’s Sheridan Auditorium on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at 7 pm.
Guest speaker, Dr. Adèle Lafrance Robinson, will show parents/guardians how to effectively respond to their child’s emotional needs with the emotion coaching model. The model outlines five steps – attending to emotions, labeling and expressing emotions, validating emotions, meeting needs and solving problems.
“We invite all parents/guardians to enjoy this free presentation,” says Rainbow District School Board Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “This topic will also be of interest to administrators, teachers and support staff. Everyone is welcome.”
“Parents/guardians have a powerful influence on their child’s emotional development,” says Dr. Lafrance Robinson. “The emotion coaching model gives parents/guardians the confidence to teach their children to be aware of their emotions and to regulate their feelings.”
She adds: “Emotion coaching has shown to improve academic performance, social skills, physical health and even independence. In emotion coaching, it’s not what happens, it’s what happens next.”
Dr. Adèle Lafrance Robinson is a Psychologist with Health Sciences North and an Associate Professor at Laurentian University. She received a Bachelor in Psychology and Linguistics from Laurentian University, a Masters Degree in Social and Developmental Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University, and a PhD in School and Child Clinical Psychology from the University of Toronto.
She is the author of several publications in the field of child and adolescent mental health and co-developed Emotion-Focused Family Therapy.
