Professional dancer pays virtual visit to Sudbury Secondary School dance students

Dance students at Sudbury Secondary School learned the ins and outs of the jazz technique during an interactive virtual workshop with Sudbury-born professional choreographer, dancer and school alumnus Mitchell Jackson.

The seminar brought together students from Grades 9 to 12 in regular and enriched dance programs. For participating, students received an “Advanced Training in a Technique” certification towards their Specialist High Skills Major in Arts and Culture.

Following the session, students were able to ask Mitchell Jackson questions about dancing, careers and creative aspirations, and also enjoyed a brief overview of his journey since graduation.

“Students were incredibly engaged in Mitchell Jackson’s presentation,” said Principal Dave Bertrim. “His story inspired them to continue pursuing their passion and left them with a strong message of hope – it’s never too late to chase your dreams.”

Mitchell Jackson graduated from the Arts Education Program at Sudbury Secondary School where he was introduced to jazz, ballet, hip-hop, contemporary dance and musical theatre. Once he graduated, his passion led him to train in Toronto, New York and Los Angeles.

Throughout his career, Mitchell Jackson has won numerous awards, started his own dance company, and has performed on CTV, MuchMusic, MTV, Rogers TV, Breakfast Television and So You Think You Can Dance Canada. He has also trained dance performers for recording artists Usher, Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber.

“Our dance staff are always looking for ways to enrich the student experience,” said Principal Dave Bertrim. “We are grateful to Mitchell Jackson for circling back to where his journey of dance began.”
