Queen Elizabeth students participate in virtual classroom with famous astronaut

“How do you put out a fire in space?” This question earned a group of Grade 1/2 students from Queen Elizabeth II Public School a front row ticket to a live webcast with retired Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield. The virtual classroom will take place on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 11:45 am.

During the webcast, Chris Hadfield will dive into the captivating relationship between geology and space exploration, and the impact of space travel on physical and mental fitness.

Canadian students were invited to submit questions for the webcast. Only a handful of the most challenging questions were chosen for the live Q&A session.

“Our students have the chance to engage in science-based 21st century learning with a well-known and respected Canadian astronaut,” says Queen Elizabeth II Public School Principal Jim Wachnuk. “This is an exceptional opportunity.”

He adds: “Congratulations to all students for their hard work in brainstorming an intriguing question and to Asia O’Gushing who was chosen to ask the question on behalf of the class.”

Hadfield’s career as an astronaut spanned two decades, from 1992 to 2013. An engineer and former Royal Canadian Air Force fighter pilot, Hadfield has flown two space shuttle missions and served as the first-ever Canadian Commander of the International Space Station. He also holds the title of the first Canadian to walk in space. Hadfield was named to the Order of Canada in 2014.
