R. L. Beattie Public School captures gold at 2012 Math Olympics

Mathletes from R. L. Beattie Public School captured the gold medal in the Sudbury Regional Mathematics Olympics at Lasalle Secondary School on Saturday, April 28, 2012.  Participants included, from left, Helen Czapor, coach Julie Cornwall, Michael Zhou, Sarah Bourdon and Jeffrey Suitor.

Grade 7 and 8 students came together on Saturday, April 28, 2012 to participate in the Sudbury Regional Mathematics Olympics at Lasalle Secondary School. Teams from Rainbow District School Board and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board competed for the honour of attending the Ontario Mathematics Olympiad (OMO) in Windsor on June 8th and 9th.

The Mathematics Olympics was hosted by the Northern Ontario Mathematics Association (NOMA), a group of dedicated educators who volunteer their time and energy to support math education. NOMA is the local chapter of the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education.

This year, R. L. Beattie Public School captured the gold medal. Marymount garnered the silver medal and Carl A. Nesbitt Public School took away the bronze.

Since Marymount is an exhibition team, students from R.L. Beattie Public School and Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will move on to the Ontario Mathematics Olympiad (OMO).  An honourable mention goes to the team from St. Benedict’s. Organizers say they finished with a terrific score, although the composition of their team made them eligible as an exhibition team only.

“The Sudbury Regional Mathematics Olympics gave students an opportunity to use their mathematical skills in a fun way,” said NOMA President Cheryl Geoghegan. “It was great to see so many students on a Saturday morning happy and excited to do math. This event fostered a sense of team work, an appreciation for mathematics, and an opportunity for collaboration, competition, and camaraderie for each participant.”

NOMA will cover all registration and accommodation fees for the gold medalists and registration fees for the second qualifying team.  “We wish our Sudbury mathletes all the best at the Ontario Mathematics Olympiad,” said Geoghegan.
