What’s happening in Rainbow Schools?
Rainbow District School Board hosts EcoSummit on May 8th
Rainbow District School Board will host the 2nd Annual EcoSummit on Thursday, May 8, 2025 from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm in the Laurentian University Fraser Auditorium. This initiative is part of the Environmental Education Committee’s ongoing efforts to nurture citizens who care about the world in which they live. This year’s theme is “Water is Life.”
Eco-leaders from Grades 7 to 12 in Rainbow Schools will attend the green symposium to learn about environmental responsibility, water sustainability, and how they can lead green and water initiatives in their respective school communities.
“Environmental education and sustainability continue to be a priority for Rainbow District School Board,” says Director of Education Bruce Bourget. “The EcoSummit will empower students with knowledge and practices to care for our planet at school, at home and in the community.”
During the event, students will hear virtually from keynote speaker, professional explorer and national bestselling author Adam Shoalts about his story of exploration and inspiration.
Adam Shoalts is a professional adventurer and Westaway Explorer-in-Residence at the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. His expeditions range from mapping rivers to archaeological projects and is best known for his long solo journeys such as crossing alone nearly 4,000 km of Canada’s Arctic.

Named one of the “greatest living explorers” by CBC and declared “Canada’s Indiana Jones” by the Toronto Star, Adam Shoalts’s latest adventure was a 3,400 km solo journey from Lake Erie to the Arctic – the subject of his new national bestselling book “Where the Falcon Flies”. He has also written “Alone Against the North”, “A History of Canada in 10 Maps”, “Beyond the Trees: A Journey Alone Across Canada’s Arctic”, and “The Whisper on the Night Wind” all of which were national best sellers. Adam also holds a PhD from McMaster University in history.
During the EcoSummit, students will also have the opportunity to take part in two water-themed workshops focused on varied topics, including Climate Change and Health Hazards; Critical Minerals on the Canadian Shield; Invertebrate Identification; Junction Creek Watershed; Let’s Be Water Walkers – Aambe Nibi Emosaawdang; Olla Clay Pot Workshop; Rewilding of Sudbury; Science of Water; Stormwater Pollution; Sudbury Regreening; Water: The Rare Resource; Water is Life: Watercolour Painting Workshops; Worm Composting and Yoga Flow and Meditation.
In an effort to further reduce our carbon footprint, transportation to and from the EcoSummit for schools within Greater Sudbury will be offered free of charge by the City of Greater Sudbury’s GOVA public transit.
