Rainbow District School Board welcomes Student Trustee for 2016-2017

Katie Yao, a Grade 12 student at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, will serve as Student Trustee on the Rainbow District School Board for the 2016-2017 school year. She was sworn in at the Board meeting on Tuesday, August 30, 2016.

“Rainbow District School Board values the student voice,” says Chair Doreen Dewar. “Katie Yao will bring this important perspective to the table as a Student Trustee. She will also have an opportunity to gain a first-hand look at the role of elected officials in a democratic society as well as develop leadership skills that will last a lifetime.”

As Student Trustee, Katie Yao will represent Sudbury and the Rainbow District School Board at the provincial level. She was recently elected Operations Officer on the Executive Council of the Ontario Student Trustee Association.

Actively involved in Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School since Grade 9, Katie Yao has been a member of the junior basketball team, junior jazz band, the badminton team, School Council and Student Council. She has also participated in many school events. Her term as Student Council Co-President last year enabled her to contribute to positive changes at the school. “All of these committees and opportunities to engage have been wonderful experiences,” she says.

Katie Yao looks forward to representing the student voice at a different level in her role as a Student Trustee. “I am honoured to have to opportunity to bring a unique and diverse perspective to the Board table on behalf of students,” she says. “As Chair of the Student Senate, I am also excited to be able to lead a group of enthusiastic students from all of the Board’s secondary schools as we work together on exciting initiatives.”

Katie Yao plans to pursue postsecondary studies in the field of medicine or business.

The first day of school is Wednesday, September 7, 2016.

There will be no early dismissal on the first day.
