Rainbow District School Board welcomes Student Trustee for 2021-2022

Michael Yao, a Grade 12 student in the French Immersion Program at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, will lead the Student Senate and serve as Student Trustee on the Rainbow District School Board for the 2021-2022 school year.

“The Student Trustee brings an important perspective to the board table,” said Chair Doreen Dewar. “We value student voice and look forward to having Michael Yao join us to engage in the discussion and provide student insight. Their voice matters, particularly as we continue to live and learn in a global pandemic.”

As an active member of his school community, Michael Yao has fostered positive connections within the school and with fellow students. He has been involved with the Student Council since Grade 9, serving as treasurer this school year. His work on the Student Council led him to the Student Senate, which includes representatives from all secondary schools.

“My high school experience wouldn’t be the same without my involvement,” he said. “In addition to helping me personally grow, it allows me to share my voice and make a difference in my school community. I hope that I’ll be able to play a small part in helping shape my peers’ experiences.”

Michael Yao said student voice is more important than ever as schools reopen for in-person learning. “Student voice provides opportunities for feedback and reflection. It promotes student engagement and creates a positive environment and culture in our schools.”

He added: “As Student Trustee, I will work alongside my fellow members on the Student Senate to make students feel safe and supported. I hope to improve the quality of education within our schools by ensuring the voices of students are being represented and heard.”

In his role as Student Trustee, Michael Yao will also represent Rainbow District School Board at the provincial level as a member of the Ontario Student Trustees’ Association (OSTA).
