Rainbow Schools celebrate Earth Day 2016

Adamsdale Public School
Students and staff at Adamsdale Public School are encouraged to bring litterless lunches for the week leading up to Earth Day. At 10 am on Friday, April 22, 2016 all students will attend a Fast Flowing Water presentation in the gym. Everyone is invited to join the water safety presentation. Staff and students will conserve energy by turning off all non-essential lights. Students are invited to wear blue and green clothing. At 1:45 pm, the entire school community will participate in a community clean up. Parents are welcome to participate.

Alexander Public School
To celebrate Earth Day, Alexander Public School will participate in a series of activities including lights out and litterless lunches. Students will support the fight against climate change by signing the 25th Anniversary Earth Flag poster. Each classroom will learn about recycling, climate change, the effects of carbon gases, composting, waste reduction, and ways to make a positive difference for the environment.

C.R. Judd Public School
C.R. Judd Public School will celebrate Earth Day by practising energy conservation with lights out, spending extra time outdoors in the natural light, opening windows and blinds, and turning off all computers. Students will support the fight against climate change by signing the 25th Anniversary Earth Flag poster, which will be attached to a hallway mural painted by students. The poster will be sent to global leaders who will meet in New York to sign the new international climate agreement.

Carl A. Nesbitt Public School
Carl A. Nesbitt Public School’s Eco Club will host an assembly in celebration of Earth Day on Friday, April 22, 2016 at 1:30 pm in the school gym. ECO Club members will perform a skit about recycling and students will watch an Earth Day video. Students will also recite a pledge from the Board.

Central Manitoulin Public School
On Friday, April 22, 2016 students will spend the morning in Waggs Park for environmental lessons and activities. In the afternoon, students will participate in a clean up event for the town of Mindemoya. The entire school will participate in Lights Out Canada and will sign the 25th Anniversary Earth Flag poster as a pledge to fight against climate change.

Charles C. McLean Public School
On Earth Day, Charles C. McLean Public School will participate in #Rooting4Trees with Earth Day Canada, an international initiative to grow a global forest. All students are encouraged to bring one dollar to help cover the cost of a tree that will be planted in the schoolyard in May. Classes will watch the Earth Day Canada video pertaining to deforestation. On Friday, April 22, 2016 at 11:30 am, a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place for the unveiling of a new composter at the school. The composting program will begin on Earth Day.

Chelmsford Public School
Chelmsford Public School will turn off all lights on Earth Day and will make every effort to restrict the use of non-essential power for the day. Students will participate in the school’s annual Book Swap. To date, the entire school community has collected more than 455 kg of batteries for the school’s battery drive.

Copper Cliff Public School
On Tuesday, April 19, 2016, the Copper Cliff Public School Eco Club will host a bake sale to raise funds for schoolyard re-greening this spring. On Earth Day, students will wear blue and green clothing and will participate in lights out to conserve energy.

Jean Hanson Public School
Jean Hanson Public School will participate in a schoolyard clean up on Friday, April 22, 2016 and will conserve energy by turning off non-essential lights and electronics from 1 pm to 2 pm.

Larchwood Public School
To celebrate Earth Day, the Larchwood Public School Eco Team will invite students to create art projects out of recyclable materials during recess. The Eco Team will lead a schoolyard and garden clean up. Teachers will help raise awareness about waste reduction through a series of classroom activities. Students are encouraged to pack a litterless lunch and the class with the highest level of participation will receive a special eco-friendly reward.

Levack Public School
Levack Public School will celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, April 21, 2016 with a pasta lunch for parents attending the Triple P workshop at 1:20 pm at the school. In an effort to increase awareness about waste reduction, the pasta will be served using recyclable materials. All non-essential lights will be turned off during this lunch to remind students and guests about the importance of energy conservation. Throughout the week, students and staff will participate in a community clean up in Levack and Onaping. Some classes will create crafts made from recyclable materials.

Markstay Public School
On Earth Day, Markstay Public School students are encouraged to bring litterless lunches. Classes will participate in lights out for a portion of the day to conserve energy.

Monetville Public School
Monetville Public School will celebrate Earth Day through activity-based learning. Students will watch introductory films and will rotate through stations in groups. The activities will include a schoolyard clean up and earth soccer. Students will also learn about square foot gardening, as a lead up to the school’s community garden that will be built in the spring. The community garden project is a partnership with the French River Community Garden Group and the Sudbury & District Health Unit. All students will pledge to "Make Earth Day every day” and reduce their carbon footprint by signing the 25th Anniversary Earth Flag poster. All lights will be turned off for Lights Out Canada.

Northeastern Elementary School
To celebrate Earth Day, Northeastern Elementary School will turn off all non-essential lights on Friday, April 22, 2016. A student assembly will take place in the morning and a schoolyard clean up in the afternoon. Members of Student Parliament will sell worm cup treats. Students will participate in a series of Earth Day learning activities. The entire school community will pledge to reduce their carbon footprint by signing the 25th Anniversary Earth Flag poster.

Pinecrest Public School
Pinecrest Public School will celebrate Earth Day by reducing all non-essential power during the school day. Students will clean debris from the schoolyard and everyone is encouraged to bring a litterless lunch.

Princess Anne Public School
Princess Anne Public School will turn off all lights and will make every effort to restrict the use of non-essential power for Earth Day. Students will participate in a schoolyard and community clean up, and will begin to plant flowerbeds with flowers and vegetables in the front of the school.

Queen Elizabeth II Public School
For Earth Day, students at Queen Elizabeth II Public School are encouraged to bring a litterless lunch. Students will participate in a schoolyard clean up. All classroom lights will be turned off for Lights Out Canada.

R.H. Murray Public School
In celebration of Earth Day, the R.H. Murray Public School Eco Team will host a schoolyard, community, and garden clean up. Staff and students are encouraged to bring litterless lunches. The class with the highest participation will receive special recognition and a prize. In an effort to promote and compare waste produced in lunches, items will be composted for one day and assessed by students. The Eco Team will continue to strive for certification with Ontario Eco Schools. Students and staff are encouraged to wear blue and green clothing to school. The Eco Team will read Earth Day messages during morning announcements and students will create Earth Day posters to display in the school.

R.L. Beattie Public School
In celebration of Earth Day, the primary classes at R.L. Beattie Public School will engage in language activities around caring for the planet. Students will explore the impact of oil and other waste products on our waterways. Junior classes will participate in a zero waste challenge in their classes for two weeks. The goal is to produce no waste, and not bring anything that cannot be recycled, reused or composted.

Redwood Acres Public School
In recognition of Earth day, Redwood Acres Public School will turn off the lights for Lights Out Canada. Students will participate in a poster contest and are planning for a schoolyard clean up once the snow has melted. Students are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle and litterless lunch.

S. Geiger Public School
Throughout the week, students at S. Geiger Public School will participate in a series of eco challenges. On Earth Day, students are invited to an assembly led by the school Eco Team. The focus will be maintaining clean and healthy waterways. Staff and students are encouraged to bring a "boomerang" lunch, where leftover food, containers, waste and recyclables are brought home. In the afternoon, students will participate in a schoolyard clean up.

Valley View Public School
Valley View Public School will embrace Earth Week with a series of activities including planting seeds in the school garden. Kindergarten students will read Dr. Seuss’s "The Lorax" followed by the creation of Truffula trees. Grade 2 students will harvest their red wiggly worms and will transfer the rich soil for the school garden. Students will sing an Earth Day song, engage in guided reading activities, and play various smart board games about the planet. Students will create crafts that demonstrate environmental awareness. They will also reflect on ways to minimize waste and the importance of protecting nature.

Valley View Public School will also host the fifth annual Book Exchange, where staff and students are invited to recycle gently used books to promote literacy. Ongoing green initiatives have contributed impressive shoe and imaginative pop bottle art in the school’s lobby display cases.

Webbwood Public School
Webbwood Public School will kick-off Earth Day celebrations with a community breakfast. Following the breakfast, students will invite family and community members to share Earth Day poems in 21st Century classrooms using the school’s new Chromebooks and iPads. Students will participate in a variety of activities related to Earth Day and will spend the afternoon cleaning up the schoolyard.

Westmount Avenue Public School
Westmount Avenue Public School students will visit the recycling centre and water treatment plant as part of their ongoing study about how to be a friendly earth buddy.

Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
To celebrate Earth Day, the students and staff at Chelmsford Valley District Composite School will lead a community clean up on Friday, April 22, 2016.

Confederation Secondary School
For Earth Day, students and staff at Confederation Secondary School with participate in a schoolyard clean up. The school’s Greener Futures Committee will lead a schoolyard clean up, weather permitting.

Lasalle Secondary School
Staff and students at Lasalle Secondary School will participate in a schoolyard clean up and will turn out the lights to conserve electricity for Earth Day. The entire school community will also wear blue and green and will host a bake sale.

Lively District Secondary School
The entire school community will participate in Earth Hour on Friday, April 22, 2016 between 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm. Staff and students are encouraged to reduce energy use throughout the day. Senior science students will participate in Earth Day activities at the University of Sudbury with a series of workshops including, "What is your Ecological Footprint?”, "Exploring Our Interconnectedness with the Earth," "Filtration in a bottle," and "The Future of Farming in Ontario".
