Rainbow Schools celebrate Education Week 2023
Rainbow Schools will mark Education Week from May 1 to 5, 2023. “Education Week provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate teaching excellence, student achievement, parental involvement and exceptional community support in Rainbow Schools,” says Director of Education Bruce Bourget. “This year’s theme, Education for a Brighter Future!, says it all. Education builds character, instills confidence, provides opportunities and opens doors.”
A.B. Ellis Public School
Throughout Education Week, A.B. Ellis Public School will celebrate with academic and cultural learning. In partnership with Espanola High School, students will showcase their music talents in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust on Monday, May 1st. The concert will take place in the Espanola High School gym at 11:30 am. Donations in support of the Trust are welcome. Students starting school this fall are invited to Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Thursday, May 4th, students will take part in a virtual presentation at 9:30 am with Robin Wall Kimmerer, an Anishinaabe Kwe Indigenous Woman from the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. A respected author, she will share her Indigenous perspective about the importance of the Honourable Harvest to support environmental responsibility and demonstrate gratitude for our planet – Mother Earth Shkagamikwe. The week will conclude with a cultural celebration with the first ever A.B. Ellis Public School Pow Wow in the school gym. The theme “Better Together” will unite community members and provide the Student Cultural Group with opportunities to share their culture.
Adamsdale Public School
Adamsdale Public School will showcase student talent on Music Monday, May 1st. Families can tune in via livestream. Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to attend Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 3rd at 5:30 pm. On Thursday, May 4th, weather permitting, families are invited to a booknic with their children in the schoolyard. Guests will enjoy a special treat at 12:40 pm. On Friday, May 5th, students will put their design and building solutions to the test by participating in various STEM challenges.
Algonquin Road Public School
Algonquin Road Public School will celebrate the power of education during Education Week. Their theme “Empowering Learners for Life” recognizes the importance of education in enabling students to become engaged, successful and independent. A series of events will take place, including music with teacher Ms. Hewlett to mark Music Monday on Monday, May 1st and Bob Ross Art Day on Tuesday, May 2nd. Students will also explore nature art with Mr. Davie and the Grade 7 and 8 class. Students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 will focus on physical education on Wednesday, May 3rd during the annual track meet at Laurentian University. Classes will tune in to a special virtual presentation about the Honourable Harvest with author Robin Wall Kimmerer on Thursday, May 4th at 9:30 am. The entire school will also enjoy STEM activities led by Mr. Crouch and Grade 7 and 8 students. The week will conclude on Friday, May 5th with an hour-long Reading Buddies session, where older students partner with younger students to read various genres of books for the love of reading.
Assiginack Public School
Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation at Assiginack Public School on Tuesday, May 2nd from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Students will tune in to a livestream presentation with Robin Wall Kimmerer on Thursday, May 4th at 9:30 am to create awareness about environmental responsibility and Indigenous ways of knowing. Families are invited to Jump Rope for Heart on Friday, May 5th from 2 pm to 3 pm. The annual campaign encourages physical fitness, heart health and mental wellness. Staff and students will also mark Canadian Mental Health Week from May 1st to 7th with mental health literacy. Tip sheets will be distributed to parents/guardians.
C.R. Judd Public School
Education Spirit Week will take place at C.R. Judd Public School where students wear different items each day in a show of spirit for education. The school choir will mark Music Monday on May 1st with a performance at Sudbury Secondary School’s Sheridan Auditorium. Students are welcome to bring in gently used books to trade during a Book Swap on Tuesday, May 2nd. The Jaguar volleyball team will play a friendly game against teachers. Families of primary students are invited to visit classrooms to read and play math games. Throughout the week, student art made from recycled materials will be on display. Students in Grades 4 and 5 will learn about the benefits of nutritious food during a “Healthy Snack Celebration”. Finally, intermediate students will partner with the Capreol Lions Club for an Adopt-a-Road community clean up on Friday, May 5th.
Charles C. McLean Public School
Several classes from Charles C. McLean Public School will invite parents/guardians to their classrooms as guest readers during Education Week. The school will host an introduction to Kindergarten on Thursday, May 4th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm for children starting school this fall and their families. Two classes will kick start “Swim to Survive” on Friday, May 5th. Grade 8 students and staff will host a Spring Family Dance from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
On Monday, May 1st, Chelmsford Valley District Composite School and Levack Public School will kick off Education Week with a Joan Mantle Music Trust Music Monday Concert in the school gym at 6 pm. Admission is by donation. All proceeds will support music education in Rainbow Schools. Throughout the week, secondary students will organize learning activities for elementary students, including Buddy Reading, art, science, physical education and a school-wide read aloud.
Churchill Public School
Churchill Public School will kick off Education Week with Music Monday on May 1st. Students will listen to the Music Monday song “Music is Our Medicine” and morning announcements will showcase the importance of music in Canadian classrooms. On Tuesday, May 2nd, children starting school this fall and their families are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation from 5 pm to 6 pm. A poetry writing activity will take place in all classes on Wednesday, May 3rd. Poems will be collected for a book and displayed in the library for the remainder of the school year. Students are invited to showcase their Charger spirit on Thursday, May 4th by wearing school colours – blue and yellow. Junior students will attend the track and field meet at Laurentian University on Friday, May 5th.
Central Manitoulin Public School
Students at Central Manitoulin Public School will kick off Education Week with Music Monday on May 1st with traditional Indigenous dance workshops. On Tuesday, May 2nd, students will enjoy a Teddy Bear Picnic. On Wednesday, May 3rd, students will plant seeds for the community garden and will paint kindness rocks to line the paths of the Wellness Orchard. Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday, May 4th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Families are invited to attend a Book Fair and see student artwork displayed in the halls. On Friday, May 5th, students will take part in electives, learning more about the strengths and interests of staff.
Copper Cliff Public School
Staff and students will take part in various activities during Education Week. Students starting school this fall and their families are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation on Monday, May 1st from 5 pm to 6 pm. A variety of field trips and excursions are planned for students throughout Copper Cliff and Sudbury. Students will enjoy Music Monday activities including a school choir performance at Lockerby Composite School. With the spring weather approaching, some classes will plant seeds for the school gardens – a focus on environmental education. Parents, guardians and grandparents are invited to read with their children at school during a “Come Read with Me Tea” on Friday, May 5th.
Jean Hanson Public School
Jean Hanson Public School students will take part in activities that creatively promote literacy and numeracy, including science experiments and the life cycle of plants, cooking, working on tree art, exploring Indigenous culture through stories, constructing sun catchers, participating in scavenger hunts and working on specialized communication programs.
Lansdowne Public School
Lansdowne Public School will mark Education Week with various opportunities for students including a Music Monday celebration in classrooms on May 1st. A Family Night is scheduled for Tuesday, May 2nd, where parents, guardians and students will take part in STEM challenges, literacy activities, environmental education and more. On Thursday, May 4th at 9:30 am, the entire school will tune in to an Indigenous virtual learning experience with author Robin Wall Kimmerer.
Larchwood Public School
Music Monday, May 1st will kick off Education Week at Larchwood Public School with a choir performance at Sudbury Secondary School’s “Let’s Sing”. Classes will enjoy musical games and learning activities. On Wednesday, May 3rd, the entire school will come together for a kindness project led by the Larchwood Kindness Ninjas. Students will create postcards with kind messages and images to be shared with homes in the community. On Thursday, May 4th at 9:30 am, classes will learn about the importance of the Honourable Harvest to support environmental responsibility and gratitude for our planet Mother Earth Shkagamikwe with author Robin Wall Kimmerer. On Friday, May 5th, the school’s Eco Club will lead the building of bird feeders and will prepare school gardens for pollinator planting.
Levack Public School
On Music Monday, May 1st, classes will perform for families and the community during a concert at 2:30 pm. The Choir will also perform at Chelmsford Valley District Composite School at 6 pm in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust. Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are invited to Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 3rd at 5:30 pm. On Thursday, May 4th at 9:30 am, students will learn about environmental responsibility and Indigenous ways of knowing during a livestream special presentation with author Robin Wall Kimmerer. Students will work with the Onaping Falls Action Committee for a community clean-up on Friday, May 5th.
Little Current Public School
Grade 4 students from Little Current Public School will kick off Education Week with a visit to the Espanola Pool for “Swim to Survive”. Children starting school this fall and their families are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 3rd from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Some students will make something extra-special for their peers during the breakfast program on Thursday, May 4th. Students will partake in immersive hands-on workshops for Abilities Day on Friday, May 5th.
Lively District Secondary School
Lively District Secondary School will kick off Education Week with two Music Monday community concerts on Monday, May 1st including performances by school music programs and Walden music groups. Students from Walden Public School are invited to a daytime concert. Parents and the broader community are invited to an evening performance at 7 pm.
Lockerby Composite School
Lockerby Composite School is proud to host a Music Monday Concert in the McKellar Auditorium on Monday, May 1st at 7 pm. The Lockerby Composite School Senior Music Class will perform in addition to the Copper Cliff Public School Choir and the MacLeod Public School Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble. All proceeds will support the Joan Mantle Music Trust which supports music education in Rainbow Schools.
MacLeod Public School
MacLeod Public School will take part in a Music Monday Concert on May 1st from 9:30 am to 10:30 am in the school’s main gym. On Tuesday, May 2nd, students in Grades 3 to 8 will attend a track meet at Laurentian University. Students will also take part in an awards assembly on Wednesday, May 3rd at 11:30 am.
Markstay Public School
Students from Markstay Public School will enjoy various daily activities to mark Education Week, including Music Monday on May 1st, math games and gum on Tuesday, May 2nd, a Reading Buddies Picnic on Wednesday, May 3rd, Board Game Day on Thursday, May 4th and a school-wide soccer baseball game on Friday, May 5th. Throughout the week, the Art Club will create a school mural. Individual students will make a LEGO person to add to the mural. During recess, Principal Kate Mackenzie will host a Card Club where students can learn a new card game each day.
Monetville Public School
On Monday, May 1st, which also marks the beginning of Mental Health Week, students are encouraged to practice daily gratitude as a means of strengthening mental health skills, and will make gratitude flowers to remember what they are thankful for. On Tuesday, May 2nd, students will enjoy a Talent Show and Bake Sale. Parents/guardians and community members are invited to watch students share their unique talents. Students will learn about patterns in math and will create their own eagle feathers to contribute to a creativity mural on Wednesday, May 3rd. On Thursday, May 4th, students will tune in to a livestream presentation with author Robin Wall Kimmerer who will share, from an Indigenous perspective, the importance of the Honourable Harvest to support environmental responsibility and gratitude for our planet Mother Earth Shakagamikwe. On Friday, May 5th, students will learn about respecting others and will create red dress window art to remind us all about respecting each other.
Northeastern Elementary School
Northeastern Elementary School will host a variety of activities to celebrate Education Week starting with Music Monday on May 1st in the school gym. Music Monday will continue for students in Grades 6 to 8 on Tuesday, May 2nd with guitarist and harpist Jamie Dupuis. Students will take part in workshops to make every student count during Abilities Day on Wednesday, May 3rd. Community agencies will be on site for added support and to highlight varying abilities. That evening, families with children starting school this fall are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation from 5 pm to 6:30 pm. The week will culminate on Friday, May 5th with a Spring Picnic for all.
Princess Anne Public School
Princess Anne Public School will host Kindergarten Orientation for children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians on Tuesday, May 2nd from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Wednesday, May 3rd, physical education classes will gather for Jump Rope for Heart activities. On Thursday, May 4th at 9:30 am, all classes will tune in to an eco-focused livestream presentation with author Robin Wall Kimmerer. Students will showcase their vocal abilities during the Princess Idol competition from 6 pm to 8 pm. The top five acts will perform for the entire school on Friday, May 5th at 9 am.
Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Queen Elizabeth II Public School will celebrate “Buddy Week” with opportunities for students to “buddy up” with peers from different grades. Kindergarten students are thrilled to share their newly developed reading skills with their Grade 1 buddies. Students in Grade 6 are working to become Ozobot experts and will serve as coding buddies to younger students. On Friday, May 5th, Buddy Week will conclude with a community celebration of music in the gym.
R.H. Murray Public School
On Monday, May 1st, R.H. Murray Public School will recognize Music Monday with a school assembly. The choir will perform the award winning song “Just One Candle”. Classes will also enjoy music-based learning. On Tuesday, May 2nd at noon, families from the Senior Kindergarten/Grade 1 class are invited for “Cuddle Up and Read”. On Wednesday, May 3rd, staff and students will welcome Brandon Petahtegoose who will bring his hand drum and will share some traditional Indigenous teachings. Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday, May 4th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
R.L. Beattie Public School
R.L. Beattie Public School will kick off Education Week with Music Monday on May 1st. Students will showcase their talents during the “Beattie’s Brightest Beats” concert. Others will share poetry during a mini café. As part of the “Let’s Be Our Beattie Best” program, all students will share what they do to be their “Beattie Best” every day, celebrating what makes students unique and special.
Redwood Acres Public School
Primary classes have been learning the song “Symphony” by Imagine Dragons to perform on Music Monday, May 1st. To promote the love of reading, the Principal and Vice-Principal of Redwood Acres Public School will present a read aloud of Laura Numeroff’s “If You Give…” series to all classes. A new math challenge will be posted for students.
S. Geiger Public School
S. Geiger Public School will host its annual Spring Variety and Silent Auction on Wednesday, May 3rd and Thursday, May 4th. This year’s special performance is “Spring Into Space” which will include contributions from all students. On Friday, May 5th, students will attend the celebration at the Biidaaban Kinoomagegamik School’s Educational Pow Wow.
Walden Public School
Walden Public School will celebrate Music Monday during a concert at Lively District Secondary School on Monday, May 1st. Performances will take place in the morning and evening by the school’s choir, ukulele and chimes clubs. A Scholastic Book Fair will be set up in the school library. Books are available for purchase in person or online. Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 3rd from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
Westmount Avenue Public School
Westmount Avenue Public School hosted a Family Math Party on Wednesday, April 26th. Students will participate in a Wizard Reading Challenge during Education Week, where classes will count the number of books read to compete for various awards.
Valley View Public School
Valley View Public School has organized an array of engaging activities to celebrate Education Week with numeracy, literacy, science and Indigenous education. Students will read and discuss inclusivity and Indigenous culture, create wampum belts, embrace kindness through Dare to Care, respect the environment, and participate in structure challenges or a wind car building contest. Activities are designed to provide students with a rich and diverse learning experience that is both educational and enjoyable.
