Rainbow Schools celebrate Education Week 2025
Rainbow Schools will mark Education Week from May 5 to 9, 2025, which begins with Music Monday. “Education Week provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate teaching excellence, student achievement, parental involvement and exceptional community support in Rainbow Schools,” says Director of Education Bruce Bourget. “This year, we focus on reading, writing and math – the foundation for learning in all subject areas.”
A.B. Ellis Public School
On Music Monday, May 5th, A.B. Ellis Public School will partner with Espanola High School to showcase student talent in the Espanola High School gym at 11:30 am. Donations in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust are welcome and appreciated. School staff will welcome families for Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, May 6th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Friday, May 9th, families are invited to visit their child’s classrooms for literacy, numeracy and STEM learning activities. Kindergarten students will explore the outdoors with a scavenger hunt to practise counting and number recognition. Grade 1 students will showcase their learning by playing literacy games. Students in Grade 1/2 will participate in literacy and numeracy games. Students in Grades 2/3 will demonstrate their skills by playing literacy games. Grade 3 students will demonstrate their coding skills with robots “Dot” and “Dash”. Students in Grade 4 will showcase their Spring Garden Writing projects to family members. Grade 5 students will present their stop motion products. Students in Grades 5/6 invite family members to participate in a fun math lesson. Grade 6/7 students will demonstrate their debate and critical thinking skills. Students in Grade 7/8 will showcase their Climate Action STEM activities and a fun lesson on substances and mixtures. Before leaving, families can select from books donated to the school Book Share to encourage opportunities to read at home.
Adamsdale Public School
Adamsdale Public School will host a variety of classroom-based activities for Education Week. To promote a love of reading, staff will welcome families for a Booknic on Thursday, May 8th. The school will also hold a Scholastic Book Fair for students. That evening, families of children starting school this fall are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Families will have an opportunity to connect with teachers, early childhood educators and school personnel. They will also meet other children starting school.
Algonquin Road Public School
Algonquin Road Public School looks forward to a fun and engaging Education Week filled with learning, creativity and community spirit. Primary and junior choirs will represent the school at the Ontario Music Festival Association after earning Diamond at the Sudbury Music Festival. Students in Grades 4 to 8 will prepare for their upcoming drama production “The Complaint Department and Lemonade”. Grade 2 students will enjoy field trips to Science North and MacLeod Public School, and will participate in STEM challenges and Fairy Tale Plays. Grade 3 students will publish and share original short stories with their peers. All grades will participate in a school-wide art activity inspired by Bob Ross, tying into the visual arts curriculum. Throughout the week, students will have the chance to visit the Scholastic Book Fair and take part in a Book Review Challenge, with submissions displayed in the library. Classes will also be invited to join the Amazing Race Math Challenge to promote problem-solving and collaboration across classrooms.
Assiginack Public School
Assiginack Public School has many events planned for Education Week. On Thursday, May 8th, children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation beginning at 5 pm. An art show will take place from 5 pm to 7 pm in the gym, while an Author’s Café will take place in the Grade 1 classroom. Finally, the school will host a Scholastic Book Fair in the library. Other events include a Jump Rope for Heart kick-off, Swim to Survive, a Manitoulin Secondary School Shadow Day, the Island Soccer Tournament and the Rainbow District School Board EcoSummit.
C.R. Judd Public School
For Education Week, C.R. Judd Public School will shine the spotlight on learning in classrooms and the community. Leading up to Education Week, on Thursday, May 1st, the school hosted Kids Biz, where families and friends visited the school gym to see student creations available for purchase. Some of the students will celebrate their reading as “reading experts” for their classes, and will share how they use strategies to decode unfamiliar words by solving a challenge word in their classroom. Other students have written fairy tales and will create puppet plays or act out their stories to share with other classes. Primary and junior students will enjoy field trips to Wahnapitae First Nations Education Centre and Science North. Some classes will host a classroom gallery Art Walk to showcase student creativity. Intermediate students will join together with members of the Capreol Lions Club for a community clean-up on Tuesday, May 6th. Families of children starting school this fall are invited to Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 7th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Throughout the week, staff will host education theme days for all.
Central Manitoulin Public School
Throughout Education Week, students from Central Manitoulin Public School will continue to build on their literacy skills. Future Eagles are welcome to the school for Kindergarten Orientation on Monday, May 5th at 5:30 pm. The School Council, with support from staff, will host a Family Literacy Night on Tuesday, May 6th. Families can participate in UFLI and Heggerty lessons, engage with local authors, enjoy oral storytelling by Debajehmujig Storytellers, take part in a literacy escape room for Grades 7 and 8 as well as an outdoor reading adventure. Some students will attend the Board’s 2nd Annual EcoSummit on Thursday, May 8th. This year’s theme is “Water is Life” to create awareness about environmental responsibility. The week will culminate with a school-wide Booknic.
Charles C. McLean Public School
At Charles C. McLean, Education Week will begin with Dairy Education presentations in all classes on Monday, May 5th. Grade 8 students will attend the Manitoulin Secondary School Shadow Day on Tuesday, May 6th. On Wednesday, May 7th junior and senior students will take part in the Island Soccer Tournament. That evening, families of students starting school this fall are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation from 5 pm to 6 pm. A Scholastic Book Fair and school art show will also take place. On Thursday, May 8th, students in the EcoClub will travel to Sudbury for the Board’s annual EcoSummit. The week will conclude with dance workshops by Body Stories Dance.
Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
Chelmsford Valley District Composite School will celebrate Education Week by fostering a love for reading with Read Aloud Madness. Classes explored various social-emotional learning themes through read alouds, reflective discussions and a chance to vote for their favourite read aloud. During Education Week, a final read aloud assembly will take place where Principal Patrick Hopkin and Vice-Principal Stephanie Thériault will read each book aloud from the final round of Read Aloud Madness.
Copper Cliff Public School
Staff and students at Copper Cliff Public School will kick off Education Week with a concert celebrating the music and talents of the school community. Family members are welcome to attend. The concert will take place on Music Monday, May 5th at noon in the gym. On Tuesday, May 6th and Wednesday, May 7th, the school will host a Book Fair in the library. Proceeds raised will go towards the purchase of books for the school library. On Thursday, May 8th, all students in Grades 3 to 8 will travel to Laurentian University for a school track and field meet. The week will culminate with a school-wide game of Find Your Match. Students will receive a picture card and must find a student with a card that matches. To earn a prize, students must learn one new thing about their partner.
Churchill Public School
Churchill Public School will be an exciting hub of activity for Education Week. To kick off the week, on Friday, May 2nd, students will enjoy an engaging event “Fast Fashion? Take Action!” A collaboration between the Eco Club and the Churchill Choir, the event will take place at noon in the gym. Eco Club members will showcase their upcycled fashion creations in an eco-friendly fashion show, while the Choir will perform a lively medley of songs. Families are invited to take part in various educational activities. On Music Monday, May 5th, students will enjoy music and dance activities to foster creativity and collaboration. Staff in the Ojibwe program will welcome parents to the school to join their children in learning a traditional song on the drum. Throughout the week, families can engage in math games, literacy activities, STEM explorations and art-related events such as literacy scavenger hunts, Teddy Bear Picnics, a school-wide book swap, a Book Café, family paint socials and math games. The school will host Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 7th at 5:30 pm for students starting school this fall.
Jean Hanson Public School
Students from Jean Hanson Public School will take part in creative activities focused on literacy and numeracy. Many classes will also explore Indigenous culture. Saturday, May 11th is Spirit Bear Day or Bear Witness Day, an annual event that honours Jordan River Anderson and invites people of all ages to “bear witness” to ensure Jordan’s Principle is fully implemented. In the lead up to the day, students will read spirit bear books and take part in art activities. All students will have the opportunity to visit the Lancer Dome on Wednesday, May 7th. On Friday, May 9th, all parents are invited to the school for a Spring Tea. Parents can peruse a student art gallery in the gym, watch a presentation of student accomplishments, and enjoy tea and snacks with their child.
Lansdowne Public School
Lansdowne Public School is excited to celebrate Education Week with a variety of engaging and inclusive activities for students and families. The fun will kick off with a school-wide assembly and spirited trivia challenge. On Music Monday, May 5th, the talented student choir will take centre stage to showcase the power of music in education. On Tuesday, May 6th, parents can participate in interactive math games and/or coding challenges with their children. On Wednesday, May 7th, families are welcome to cozy up for Snuggle and Read – to celebrate the joy of reading together. Staff look forward to welcoming future students and their families at Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday, May 8th at 5:30 pm. Children can explore the classroom, meet their teachers, and learn more about the exciting journey that awaits them at Lansdowne. The week will wrap-up with Fitness Friday, featuring a school-wide scavenger hunt and a lively students vs. teachers obstacle course. Throughout the week, students and families can also browse and shop at the Book Fair.
Lasalle Elementary School
Lasalle Elementary School will celebrate Education Week with many engaging learning opportunities for students and families. The week will commence with Music Monday, May 5th, where students and families will enjoy a school assembly and choir performance. To ignite student minds, buddy reading and writing will take place across several grades, as well as the presentation of a fable and a play by a group of junior students. A group of primary students will visit Dynamic Earth for an exciting day of hands-on science exploration. Students will engage in interactive activities that spark curiosity, deepen their understanding of the world around them and bring the curriculum to life. To inspire their futures, students will engage in a variety of eco-initiatives focused on water conservation, water filtration, and creating useful items from recycled materials. The school will also wrap up a textile drive in support of Pet Save.
Levack Public School
Education Week at Levack Public School will include musical performances by students to celebrate Music Monday. Families are invited to attend. Students will also take part in classroom-based buddy activities, including science experiments, a writing challenge, and a math scavenger hunt. Students will continue to learn about powwows and Water Walkers as the entire school community prepares for a powwow in the coming weeks.
Little Current Public School
Little Current Public School will participate in the Skills Ontario Provincial Championships in Toronto on Monday, May 5th. On Wednesday, May 7th, junior and intermediate students will take part in the Island Soccer Tournament. That same evening, children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation at the school from 5 pm to 6 pm. The Eco Team will travel to Sudbury for the Board’s EcoSummit on Thursday, May 8th, while Grade 4 students will take part in Swim To Survive. Staff and students will mark Mental Health Week with daily announcements about honesty, understanding and courage. The following week, the School Council will be hosting a STEM night for families on Tuesday, May 13th from 5 pm to 6 pm.
Lockerby Composite School
On Music Monday, May 5th, Lockerby Composite School will host a concert alongside Princess Anne Public School in the McKellar Auditorium at 7 pm. Both school bands will perform. Proceeds from the event will support the Joan Mantle Music Trust. The Lockerby Student Council will host various events throughout the week, and will also attend the Board’s Free to Be Me Conference on Thursday, May 9th.
MacLeod Public School
MacLeod Public School will kick off Education week with a Music Monday concert where students will share music and song. On Tuesday, May 6th, the School Council will host Taco Tuesday for students, and on Wednesday and Thursday, the school play “Wooing Wed Widing Hood” will make its debut to other Rainbow Schools. A performance for the public will take place on Thursday, May 8th at 6 pm.
Markstay Public School
Markstay Public School has planned a fun-filled Education Week. To kick start the celebrations, all students are welcome to sing along to the Music Monday song together in the gym. On Tuesday, May 6th, the entire school community is invited to wear yellow in recognition of Wishbone Day to honour one of their own. In the afternoon, students will engage in a math challenge. On Wednesday, May 7th, staff and students will join in teams for a STEM challenge. On Thursday, May 8th families are invited into the school for a literacy afternoon. Students starting school this fall are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Friday, May 9th everyone will dress in green for a community clean-up. Throughout the week, students will engage in a read aloud with Principal Lisa Puddester.
Monetville Public School
At Monetville Public School, Education Week will begin with the creation of window art to mark Red Dress Day. On Tuesday, May 6th, students in Kindergarten will host a parents pizza making party for their “Chefs of the Future” CCEL project. On Wednesday, May 7th, the entire school will join together for a community walk. Students and parents will engage in hands-on math games and activities on Thursday, May 8th. Dr. Dhatt will visit the school to read to students on Friday, May 9th.
Northeastern Elementary School
Northeastern Elementary School will kick off Education Week with a school-wide sing along in the gym on Monday, May 5th at 10 am. On Tuesday, May 6th, the school will host the 10th Annual Awareness Day designed to promote inclusion and acceptance. Local agency representatives and guest speakers will visit the school to speak with staff and students about various disabilities and disorders, mental health strategies as well as cyber safety. The newest Cougars are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 7th from 5 pm to 6:30 pm. On Friday, May 9th, intermediate students will host an Upcycled-Broken Toy Art Show.
Princess Anne Public School
The Princess Anne Public School Dare To Care Crew will host a variety of “Caught You Caring” activities to promote kindness and anti-bullying. On Monday, May 5th, the Princess Anne concert Band will play at Lockerby Composite School for a Joan Mantle Music Trust fundraiser. On Tuesday, May 6th, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, staff will welcome children starting school this fall for Kindergarten Orientation. Select students will showcase their vocal abilities during the annual Princess Idol Competition on Thursday, May 8th from 6 pm to 8 pm. The top five acts will perform for the entire school on Friday, May 9th at 9 am. The Princess Anne Eco Club will create experiential learning opportunities for students outside the classroom to emphasize active participation, reflection, and the application of knowledge to real-life scenarios to make learning engaging and impactful.
Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Staff from Queen Elizabeth II Public School will host special events throughout Education Week to support the ongoing instruction in literacy and numeracy. On Wednesday, May 7th, special guests will speak with junior students about various ways of learning and to bring awareness to topics including varying abilities, and how they can promote inclusion and acceptance of all individuals. To foster a love of reading, students will enjoy buddy reading as well as a school-wide read aloud.
R.H. Murray Public School
To kick off Education Week, students will celebrate Music Monday on May 5th with a special assembly. The week will be filled with fun activities. Grade 4/5 students will teach other classes about sphero programmable robots to help kids learn fundamental STEM concepts through play-based learning. Grade 2 students will deliver presentations on the micro hatchery with a focus on walleye for a spring fry release. The Grade 3/4 class will teach other classes about vermiculture and the life cycle of chickens. The week will also include writing buddies and math game activities.
R.L. Beattie Public School
For Education Week, students from R.L. Beattie Public School will take part in various exciting activities. In the lead up to Education Week, families are encouraged to send gently used books suitable for readers from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Beginning on Monday, May 5th, students will select a book to take home. On Tuesday, May 6th at 5 pm, the school will welcome future Barons for a Kindergarten Orientation session for children to explore classrooms and meet staff. On Thursday, May 8th, students will take part in a community clean-up. Classes will spread out to nearby selected streets to collect waste and protect the environment.
S. Geiger Public School
S. Geiger Public School will host its annual Spring Variety and Silent Auction on Thursday, May 8th, with performances in the afternoon and evening. The show, “The Bright Side”, will focus on kindness and positivity and will include contributions from all students. The school will also recognize Mental Health Week with daily announcements and activities to promote positive mental health.
Valley View Public School
Valley View Public School will kick off Education Week with a schoolyard and community clean-up. Students will learn traditional Indigenous games and lacrosse from special guest instructors. On Thursday, May 8th, staff will host a Math Games Day to focus on having fun with numbers while reinforcing essential math skills. Throughout the week, classes will partner up for buddy reading sessions to share and enjoy books together. Education Week will conclude with an Entrepreneurship Fair, where intermediate students will present their business plans, products and displays while highlighting a connection to environmental stewardship. Families and community members are invited to join staff for this exciting showcase.
Walden Public School
Walden Public School will join Lively District Secondary School in a celebration of Music for their Spring Concert. The Walden choir will sing songs including the Music Monday song “Hold On”, and will also be joined by the ukulele club for a few more favourites. The school will also welcome children starting school this fall for Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday, May 8th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Finally, the school will host a Scholastic Book Fair and buddy reading day.
