Rainbow Schools celebrate Education Week from May 2 to 6
Rainbow Schools will mark Education Week from May 2 to 6, 2016. “Education week provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate teaching excellence, student achievement, parental involvement and exceptional community support in Rainbow Schools,” says Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. This year’s theme is Achieving Excellence: Promoting Well-Being.
A.B. Ellis Public School
A.B. Ellis Public School students will take part in a school assembly to sing the Music Monday song, with a special performance from the school Concert Band. Staff will host parents/guardians and future students for Kindergarten Orientation on Monday, May 2 at 4 pm. Students will participate in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activity day on Wednesday, May 4. A Terry Fox Walk and school assembly will take place on Thursday, May 5. The school will host Family Literacy Day on Friday, May 6, where parents/guardians and family members are invited to the school to read with their children.
Adamsdale Public School
Adamsdale Public School will host their annual Talent Show on Monday, May 2, starting at 9:45 am in the school gym. Students and staff will also celebrate Music Monday. During the morning of Wednesday, May 4, students in Grades 2 and 3, and students in the intensive support program, will attend the Jean Hanson Public School Blacklight presentation. On Thursday, May 5, staff will host a Kindergarten Orientation session for parents/guardians and future students from 2 pm to 3 pm and again from 5 pm to 6 pm. Friday, May 6 will be Dress Loud Day to promote awareness for those living with hearing loss or impairment. The Junior Boys’ Basketball Team will participate in the board tournament on Thursday and Friday.
Alexander Public School
Alexander Public School students will participate in a series of activities to celebrate Education Week. Students and staff will sing in unison in the schoolyard to celebrate Music Monday on Monday, May 2. Mireille Messier will visit primary students to discuss the beauty of imagination, reading, literacy and writing a book. Teachers will display student work and parents/guardians are invited to visit the classrooms for exciting math challenges. Parents/guardians can also engage in student-led conferencing. All classes will participate in a variety of excursions to promote well-being including a visit to The Art Gallery of Sudbury, the Laurentian trails, the Laurentian Conservation Area and Science North. Teachers have sent invitations home to parents and information has been posted on the classroom website. Students will also reflect on the opportunity they’ve been given to celebrate how fortunate they are to have funded education. L’éducation est forte et vivante à Alexander.
Algonquin Road Public School
Algonquin Road Public School will celebrate Education Week with student activities. Parents/guardians and family members are invited to read with their children. The school will also host a Scholastic Book Fair in an effort to promote literacy and a love for reading. Students are invited to dress as their favourite book character to stimulate book discussion in classrooms. Students will also spend an afternoon playing math games.
Assiginack Public School
On Tuesday, May 3, between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm, parents/guardians are invited to join students to learn various concepts and strategies with math games. At 12:30 pm all students will gather in the gym to hear the School Band perform. Parents/guardians are encouraged to join. A Scholastic Book Fair will also take place from 10 am through 1:30 pm. Parents/guardians and future students are invited for Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 4 starting at 6 pm. Guests will enjoy various activities. The Scholastic Book Fair will continue from 12:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Friday, May 6, students will participate in Jump Rope for Heart at 12 pm. Students in Grades 3 to 6 will work on their S.T.E.A.M. projects as part of Genius Hour. Parents/guardians are encouraged to see what Makerspace is all about from 2 pm to 3 pm.
C.R. Judd Public School
C.R. Judd Public School will kick-off Education Week with a special Music Monday sing along to Connor Ross’s "We Are One". On Tuesday, May 3, students in Grades 5 to 8 will demonstrate good citizenship by partnering with volunteers from the Lions Club and the City of Greater Sudbury for a community clean up. Primary and junior students will participate in a city-wide reading of the book “Mr. Zinger’s Hat” by Cary Fagan. Students will swap books for the book exchange in the library. On Wednesday, May 4, primary students will host author Kerri Figgin, who will share stories and some of her books. On Friday, May 6, at 12 pm, moms are invited to attend a special Mother’s Day celebration in the gym with students from Kindergarten to Grade 3. Students will offer kind words, stories and cards, and will serve iced tea and cookies.
Carl A. Nesbitt Public School
All students will assemble outside Carl A. Nesbitt Public School at 10:15 am on Monday, May 2 to sing the Music Monday song, "We Are One". Students will also work with a representative of the Sudbury & District Health Unit to provide feedback on the Northern Fruit and Vegetable Program.
Central Manitoulin Public School
Central Manitoulin Public School will kick-off Education Week with a food drive. All items collected will be donated to Manitoulin Family Resources. On Tuesday, May 3, also known as Top 10 Tuesday, all classes will brainstorm a top ten list of ways to promote well-being. All lists will be posted in the main foyer of the school. On Wednesday, May 4, parents/guardians and future students are invited for Kindergarten Orientation starting at 5 pm, followed by a GPS Family Scavenger Hunt at 6 pm and Family Zumba at 6:30 pm. For Think Positive Thursday, staff and students will focus on mindfulness and calming strategies. On Fitness Friday, the entire school will participate in a walk at 8:50 am. Staff and students are also invited to bring in litterless lunches.
Chelmsford Public School
The Grades 4 to 6 students at Chelmsford Public School will return to Tim Hortons Camp to complete their leadership training from May 3 to 6. Primary students will participate in the Reading Town Sudbury event with students from Chelmsford Valley District Composite School on Tuesday, May 3. A team of students will take part in the Franco-Rainbow Lip Sync Contest on Wednesday, May 4 at Valley View Public School. The school will also host a French Author who will instruct and entertain students.
Charles C. McLean Public School
On Monday, May 2, all classes will participate in a variety of mental math activities. Two classes will travel to Manitoulin Secondary School for the Classic School of Dance 2016 ballet performance of “Mulan” on Tuesday, May 3. Representatives from Hydro One will also visit Grade 4 and 5 students. A tree will be planted in the schoolyard as part of their presentation. On Wednesday, May 4, parents/guardians and future students are invited to Kindergarten Orientation at 6 pm. On Thursday, May 5 and Friday, May 6, Grade 5/6 and 6/7 classes will perform the musical “ROCK! The History of Rock and Roll” at 7 pm.
Copper Cliff Public School
Copper Cliff Public School will host their annual Book Fair during Education Week. On Wednesday, May 4 at 11:55 am, community members are invited to the elementary Heritage Fair. Selected junior and intermediate students will compete at the Franco-Rainbow Lip Sync Contest on Wednesday, May 4 at Valley View Public School. Staff and students will take part in math games in the gym on Thursday, May 5 starting at 12 pm. Parents/guardians are invited to explore the benefits of math games to help build confidence and fact fluency in a fun and engaging way. Education Week will culminate with a Student vs. Staff basketball game on Friday, May 6 at 11:30 am.
Cyril Varney Public School
On Monday, May 2, Cyril Varney Public School will celebrate Music Monday. A student art showcase will take place on Tuesday, May 3 at 11:30 am. Students will also have the opportunity to purchase books during the Book Fair between 8 am and 3 pm. On Wednesday, May 4, students will participate in the Franco-Rainbow Lip Sync Contest at Valley View Public School. The Book Fair will continue from 8 am to 3 pm and 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Family members are invited for a special Family Dance starting at 6 pm. Student-led conferences will take place on Thursday, May 5 in the gym. The Grade 4 Passion Projects Exhibition will begin at 11:30 am. The Book Fair will continue from 9 am to 3 pm. On Friday, May 6, the entire school will participate in a character education assembly at 9:15 am in the gym, followed by Cyril Varney’s first ever Pow Wow at 11:45 am.
Ernie Checkeris Public School
Moms and guardians are invited to bring in their special teacup for the Mother’s Day Tea on May 2, as part of Music Monday. Guests are invited in two seatings beginning with the Kindergarten classes at 11:30 am and Grade 1 to 3 classes at 1:30 pm. On Wednesday, May 4 at 5:30 pm, the school community will come together for food, games and fun during the annual Ernie Checkeris Fun Fair. Parents/guardians and future Kindergarten students have been invited to join in the celebration.
Jean Hanson Public School
Jean Hanson Public School staff and students will celebrate Education Week with a special Blacklight production performance. The entire school will demonstrate their creative and artistic skills with this energetic and engaging show with music, dance and blacklight effects.
Lansdowne Public School
Lansdowne Public School will host parents/guardians and future students for Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, May 3 at 10 am. French Immersion students will take part in the Franco-Rainbow Lip Sync Contest on Wednesday, May 4 at Valley View Public School.
Larchwood Public School
A number of exciting activities are planned at Larchwood Public School during Education Week. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 will participate in the Reading Town Sudbury event and will read Cary Fagan’s “Mr. Zinger’s Hat”. Special guest Ms. Quinlan from the Greater Sudbury Public Library will lead a school wide art activity related to the book. On Tuesday, May 3 and Thursday, May 5, parents/guardians are invited to join students for 30 minutes of SPARK Zumba starting at 8:45 am in the gym. Grades 4 to 8 students will welcome Jenine Saunders from Pilates Pro on Wednesday, May 4. Ms. Saunders will lead the students in a wellness workshop focused on mind, body and breathing. On Thursday, May 5, René the Magnificent will entertain students with an interactive magic show. As well, the annual Larchwood Talent Show will showcase student talent.
Levack Public School
Levack Public School will kick-off Education Week with a special Music Monday celebration, Music in our Lives, on Monday, May 2. The Onaping Falls Community is invited to attend this free concert in the school gym starting at 1 pm. The concert will feature live performances from the Levack Rock Band, the Choir and individual student performers. The Entrepreneurship Fair will take place on Wednesday, May 4 for students in Grades 7 and 8. The Fair will capture student work with business plans, budgets and promotion tactics. Members of the community are welcome to view student work. Various items will be for sale. On Thursday, May 5, at 9 am, students from Kindergarten to Grade 4 are invited for a special Bear Wise presentation with special guest Mike Commito. Parents/guardians and future students are welcome for Kindergarten Orientation at 5 pm. The event will provide the opportunity to explore the Kindergarten program offered in English and French Immersion. Starting Monday, May 2, students will be asked to donate books for the Book Swap on Friday, May 6. All remaining books will be donated to classroom libraries.
Little Current Public School
Grade 7 and 8 students will attend Manitoulin Secondary School for a matinée performance of "Mulan" by the Island School of Dance on Tuesday, May 3. A book fair will take place in the school library from 9 am to 6 pm on Wednesday, May 4, with all proceeds going to the library. The school’s spring concert will take place on Wednesday, May 4 in the gym. A matinée performance will begin at 9 am and an evening performance at 6 pm. This year’s theme is "New Beginnings". Students will collect funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation on Friday, May 6, during Jump Rope for Heart.
MacLeod Public School
Students at MacLeod Public School will show school spirit for the “What I Like Best About My School” contest on Monday, May 2. Winning submissions will be shared and displayed in the main foyer. A Music Monday assembly will take place at 11:45 am in the gym. On Tuesday, May 3, students will show Mustang pride by dressing in school spirit wear and/or school colours. Parents/guardians and future students are invited for Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday, May 5 from 12 pm to 1 pm and again from 5 pm to 6 pm. Students will participate in a Kids’ Lit Quiz at 9 am on Friday, May 6. For two decades, Kids’ Lit Quiz has inspired youth to become lifelong readers by channeling knowledge of children’s books into a fun and challenging tournament. Students will “Dress Out Loud” in support of those who are deaf and hard of hearing. Students are invited to bring any book from home to exchange for another book during the Book Swap starting at 10 am.
Markstay Public School
Markstay Public School will host Music Monday in the gym starting at 9:30 am on Monday, May 2. All families and community members are welcome. On Tuesday, May 3, students will participate in the Reading Town Sudbury read aloud of Cary Fagan’s “Mr. Zinger’s Hat”. Parents/guardians and future students are invited to Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday May 4 at 5:15 pm. Interested individuals are asked to call 705-671-5946 to register. Volunteers, School Council members, bus drivers and valued community partners are invited to an appreciation breakfast at the school on Friday, May 6 at 9:15 am.
Monetville Public School
Monetville Public School students will celebrate Music Monday with a special "We Are One" sing along. Female students in Grades 7 and 8 will attend the Young Women’s Conference, while a group of students will represent the school at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition also in Waterloo. On Tuesday, May 3, all classes will take part in the Reading Town Sudbury event. Angela Martin, president of Ontario Nature, will speak with students about birds in the Monetville area on Wednesday, May 4. To end the week, students will be treated with a visit from author Karen Autio. The school’s annual Fun Fair will take place on Friday, May 6 from 5 pm to 7:30 pm. Everyone is welcome.
Northeastern Elementary School
On Monday, May 2, the Northeastern Elementary School Glee Club will sing O’Canada during morning announcements to celebrate Music Monday. A used book donation drive will also begin. Students will read “Mr. Zinger’s Hat” by Cary Fagan for the city-wide Reading Town Sudbury event on Tuesday, May 3, for Literacy Day. The event will be followed by a writing activity. The entire school community is invited to participate in Hat Day. Students will attend the Franco-Rainbow Lip Sync Contest on Wednesday, May 4 at Valley View Public School. Parents/guardians are invited for family Zumba after school on Thursday, May 5. Students and staff will host parents/guardians for a special pancake breakfast on Friday, May 6. Following the breakfast, guests are invited to participate in classroom activities with their children. Used books will be available for purchase for $1 each.
Pinecrest Public School
Pinecrest Public School students will participate in seminars regarding the importance of mental health, making the connection between school success and well-being. Students will engage in conversation about the signs of anxiety, coping mechanisms, and who to speak to during times of need. Various coping exercises will be demonstrated and practiced, such as breathing, visualization and grounding. A school social worker will facilitate the seminars.
Princess Anne Public School
Throughout Education Week, Princess Anne Public School students will participate in a variety of activities. The week will begin with a kick-off to the school’s "Activate Your Recess" campaign, in partnership with the Healthy Kids Community Challenge and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Students in the Intensive Support Program will visit Jean Hanson Public School for their annual Blacklight performance. Princess Anne Public School has been chosen to host Toronto author Cary Fagen for the Reading Town Sudbury event on Tuesday, May 3. Mr. Fagan will visit students to share a dramatic interpretation of his book "Mr. Zinger’s Hat", followed by an afternoon tea with Kindergarten students. On Tuesday, May 3, parents/guardians are invited to the school for a literacy and numeracy night, in conjunction with Kindergarten Orientation at 5:30 pm.
Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Queen Elizabeth II Public School will kick-off Education Week with an assembly spearheaded by social worker Christine McInnes and Aboriginal support worker Taylor Kozachanko. The focus will be on the importance of understanding our emotions and maintaining healthy lifestyles. The entire week will be filled with various activities and strategies to promote well-being including yoga, meditation, smudging, healthy eating, physical fitness exercises and mindfulness techniques.
R. H. Murray Public School
Students at R.H. Murray Public School will participate in various activities to promote well-being, starting with a Music Monday celebration on Monday, May 2. A Drumstick Workout and well-being presentation by Renee Desjardins will take place in the gym at 9:10 am. Serenity Spa will pamper teachers will well-deserved massages. Will Morin, First Nation Professor from Laurentian University will perform a smudging ceremony in the morning on Wednesday, May 4. Students in Grades 5 to 8 will attend the Spring Concert at Lively District Secondary School. Kindergarten to Grade 4 students will participate in yoga instructed by Ms. Hamilton, followed by an outdoor hike and picnic, weather permitting. A Jump Rope For Heart event will also take place. Moms are invited to the school on Friday, May 6 at 2 pm for a Mother’s Day Tea.
R.L. Beattie Public School
Students will exercise their minds with fun and challenging math activities for Education Week. On Monday, May 2, students will participate in a Music Monday celebration in the gym at 12 pm. Special musical performances will take place from the Band of Barons, the Minitones, the Barontones and the Group of 5s, 6s, 7s and 8s. At 11 am on Tuesday, May 3, Kindergarten to Grade 3 students will take part in the Reading Town Sudbury event and will read the book “Mr. Zinger’s Hat” by Cary Fagan. The event will attempt to break the record for the most people reading the same story in unison in two languages. On Wednesday, May 4 and Friday, May 6, students will participate in yoga and will learn mindfulness, how to decompress and move our bodies.
Redwood Acres Public School
Redwood Acres Public School will kick start Education Week with a Music Monday concert on Monday, May 2 at 11:30 am. On Tuesday, May 3 at 11 am, students will participate in a city-wide reading of "Mr. Zinger’s Hat" by Cary Fagan for Reading Town Sudbury. A book exchange will take place from 9 am until 12 pm. On Wednesday, May 4, author Cary Fagan with visit Kindergarten to Grade 2 classrooms to read and participate in literacy activities with students. At 5:30 pm, a Family Night with René the Magnificent will take place. On Thursday, May 5, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm, parents/guardians and future students are invited to Kindergarten Orientation. Students will engage in a water safety presentation on Friday, May 6 at 9:30 am.
S. Geiger Public School
S. Geiger Public School will host their annual Spring Variety and Silent Auction on Wednesday, May 4 and Thursday, May 5. This year’s special performance will be "The Most Magnificent Things" which includes contributions from all students. On Friday, May 6, speakers from the community are invited to participate in workshops with the students to kick-off the First Nations Agricultural Inquiry Project.
Valley View Public School
Valley View Public School students will engage in numerous activities for Education Week. Classes will write letters to a teacher or a staff member that has done something special to make their education extraordinary. Primary students will combine classes to play math games on Thursday, May 5. Grade 2 classes will read "Tourbillons d’émotions" which will help educate them on how to deal with emotions, and "Moi, je m’aime" about loving one’s self. Literacy and art activities will be based on the stories. Grade 4 students will take “brain breaks” with 10 minutes of yoga and breathing techniques after each recess. Students will discuss how a positive mindset and attitude can affect one’s overall well-being. Grades 1 to 8 students will participate in the annual Franco-Rainbow Lip Sync Contest on Wednesday, May 4.
Walden Public School
On Monday, May 2, Greater Sudbury’s Poet Laureate Kim Fahner will visit Walden Public School to share her passion for poetry with students and staff. At 11:30 am, the entire school will celebrate Music Monday. At 1:40 pm, a Jump Rope for Heart campaign kick-off will take place. On Tuesday, May 3 at 10 am, Kindergarten to Grade 2 students will participate in Tunes and Tales at the Lively Public Library. Some students will participate in the Reading Town Sudbury event at 11 am, while Kindergarten to Grade 5 students will read to residents at Finlandia Village. A Book Fair will also take place and will continue through Wednesday, May 4. At 9:15 am, students are invited to participate in the Talent Show. Aboriginal Awareness Workshops with Will Morin will take place starting at 1 pm. Primary students will learn about the Seven Grandfather Teachings, while junior students will spend time learning about smudging and Medicine Wheel Teachings. French Immersion students in Grades 4 and 5 will visit Valley View Public School for the Franco-Rainbow Lip Sync Contest. Parents/guardians and future students are invited to the school for Kindergarten Orientation from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Thursday, May 5 at 10 am, students in Grades 4 to 6 will visit Lively District Secondary School for a spring concert. On Friday, May 6, author Mireille Messier will visit the Grade 1 and 2 French Immersion classes and the Grade 3 and 4 classes from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm. Students are also invited to take part in Dress Loud Day to bring awareness to those who suffer from hearing loss and impairment.
Webbwood Public School
Webbwood Public School will kick-off Education Week with a special visitor who will lead yoga and mindfulness. Students will praise their uniqueness with a read aloud event of the book “The Best Part of Me”. Following the reading, each student will create a page for the Webbwood Public School book to celebrate the entire school community. To end Education Week, all students will be treated to a healthy breakfast followed by a student led Zumba class.
Westmount Public School
Westmount Public School will focus on healthy eating during Education Week to promote the importance of living a balanced lifestyle. Classes will study healthy eating and how to prepare nutritious meals. All activities will incorporate math and literacy strategies. Students will also have the opportunity to create a healthy snack.
Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
The entire school community at Chelmsford Valley District Composite School will celebrate Education Week with a Career Fair. Teachers will invite guest speakers to their classrooms to expose students to the various pathways.
Espanola High School
During Education Week, the Espanola High School Senior Band will delight the residents of Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation with a special musical performance. The school’s Grade 8 Trades Day will take place on Tuesday, May 10, to accommodate elementary Education Week activities. Life Skills students will prepare an art display at the school.
Lively District Secondary School
The Lively District Secondary School Grade 7 and 8 Concert Bands, and the Rock Band, will perform a special Spring Concert on Thursday, May 5 for students from Walden Public School and R.H. Murray Public School. Parents and community members are invited to attend an evening performance at 7 pm.
Sudbury Secondary School
The Sudbury Secondary School Visual Arts Department will host an art exhibition from Wednesday, May 4 to Friday, May 6 in the school library. This annual art exhibition will feature creative student art in a wide variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and fashion design. The opening reception will take place on Wednesday, May 4 at 6 pm. Entertainment and refreshments will be provided. Admission is free and is suitable for all ages.
