ELEMENTARY

A.B. Ellis Public School

On Monday, May 6th, JK to Grade 8 students from A.B. Ellis Public School will visit Science North and the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Exhibit.

A.B. Ellis Public School will host its Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Wednesday, May 8th from 9:30 am to 10:30 am and 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

Education Week at A.B. Ellis Public School will culminate with a Scholastic Book Fair on Thursday, May 9th.

Adamsdale Public School

Adamsdale Public School will celebrate Music Monday on May 6th with a gathering in the gym at 12:30 pm.  Students will sing the official Music Monday song “Is Somebody Singing” written by Astronaut and musician Chris Hadfield and Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies.  The Adamsdale Franco Rainbow team will also perform their lip sync song. Everyone is welcome.

Adamsdale Public School invites the community to tune in on Monday, May 6th at 8:10 am on Morning North, 99.9 FM in Sudbury, or go to cbc.ca/morningnorth to hear their enthusiastic Grade 4 students sing Is Somebody Singing.

A Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) orientation session will be held on Thursday, May 9th from 2 pm to 3 pm.  Parents and students new to the Early Learning Kindergarten Program will participate in a variety of school readiness activities and tour the school.

On Friday, May 10th, the week will end with a school dance in the gym from 12 pm to 3 pm.  Parents/guardians are invited to attend the Spring Fling.

Alexander Public School

On Monday, May 6th, Alexander Public School will celebrate Music Monday.

The students will gather in the gym at 12 pm for an awards ceremony to celebrate their efforts in French, mathematics, character education and attendance.

The Lockerby Composite School Senior Band will join students to play and sing the songs "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Is Somebody Singing".

The students will then join the Music Monday webcast from the International Space Station and sing along with Commander Hadfield. All parents are welcome to join them.

Assiginack Public School

Assiginack Public School will host its Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Tuesday, May 7th from 3:45 pm to 4:45 pm.  All students starting JK this fall along with their parents/guardians are invited.

On Wednesday, May 8th, Assiginack will host an Open House from 1:30 pm to 3 pm, which will include classroom visits, reader’s theatre, dance, acting, poetry, French plays, and a performance by the Grade 7/8 band.

Algonquin Road Public School

On Monday, May 6th, all students of Algonquin Road Public School will gather water to carry to the school to simulate what the women of Kenya must do three to six times a day for two to three kilometres.

This activity will give the students a representation of what it is like to not have fresh clean drinking water available at a close reliable source.

Money raised from pledges will go towards building wells in rural Kenya through Sudbury Minga for Maasai and Free the Children.

Carl A. Nesbitt Public School

Prior to Education week, students at Carl A. Nesbitt Public School visited Science North and hosted a Spring Fun Fair.  Students also participated in Live Different, a presentation on character education and mental health issues.

On Monday, May 6th, students will sing the Music Monday song along with Commander Hadfield from the International Space Station. The school will also launch its new Carl Nesbitt school song created by students – The Nesbitt Notes – and songwriter Julie Kryk.  Students will also participate in the Water Walk for Pimbiniet. The school invites the community to join them for the singing and the walk from 2 pm to 2:45 pm and to raise Pennies for Pimbiniet.

Grade 6 students will travel to Lasalle Secondary School to participate in a career fair on Tuesday, May 7th.

Following Education Week, French singer and songwriter Natalie Vachon will visit Grade 3 and 4 students on Monday, May 13.

Charles C. McLean Public School

Charles C. McLean Public School will celebrate Music Monday on May 6th with a performance in the gym at 1 pm.  Each class has prepared a special performance and parents/guardians and community members are invited to attend.

On Tuesday, May 7th, Stan Peltier will visit the school to engage students in hands-on Native Studies workshops.

On Thursday, May 9th, the school’s soccer teams will participate in the Island Soccer Championships.

Chelmsford Public School

Students and parents at Chelmsford Public School are welcome to browse and shop the wide variety of books available through the Scholastic Book Fair from Tuesday, May 7th to Friday, May 10th in the school library. 

On Tuesday, May 7th, Chelmsford Public School will showcase the creativity of its students at a Talent Show at 1:30 pm and 6:30 pm. 

New Junior Kindergarten students and their parents are invited to an evening of “Welcome to Kindergarten” activities on Wednesday, May 8th from 6 pm to 7 pm.  There will be fun activities, snacks and a short school bus ride around the neighbourhood.

On Friday, May 10th, Chelmsford Public School will celebrate the valuable contributions of its many volunteers with a luncheon.  Go Dragons Go!

Churchill Public School

On Friday, May 10th, Grade 5 students will host a Night at the Museum. The students will set the classroom up with a variety of Ancient Civilization exhibits to showcase their projects. Parents and Churchill students will be invited to tour the "museum".

On Wednesday, May 8th, Grade 6 students at Churchill Public School will hold a gently used book sale called "Books for Breanna". Breanna Baxter was a Churchill Charger from JK to Grade 3 who passed away in December 2009, at the age of 9. Students at Churchill have been invited to donate their old books for the book sale. Money raised will go towards helping Sudbury families who have a child with cancer. The Churchill community has a huge heart and is looking forward to participating in this meaningful event.

Central Manitoulin Public School

On Monday, May 6th, Internet safety expert Steve Chapelle will deliver a presentation to Central Manitoulin’s Grade 6 to 8 students at 9:15 am.

Central Manitoulin Public School will host a Scholastic Book Fair on Tuesday, May 7th from 12 pm to 3 pm and Wednesday, May 8th, from 10 am to 5 pm in the school’s library.

Some students will also visit Manitoulin Secondary School to view the annual ballet production performed by Manitoulin’s School of Dance.

Central Manitoulin Public School will host its Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session for JK students starting school this fall and their parents/guardians on Wednesday, May 8th from 5 pm to 6 pm. On that day, the students will plant a sugar maple in the schoolyard in partnership with Ontario Hydro.

Central Manitoulin Public School will host the Intermediate Island Soccer Tournament on Thursday, May 9th.  Games will be played from 10 am to 2 pm. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer on the teams.

Copper Cliff Public School

Copper Cliff Public School is hosting several events for Education Week, starting with its annual Sharon Milligan Community Clean-up on Friday, May 3rd at 10:30 am.  The school invites the community to join them to keep Copper Cliff clean.

The Canadian Peregrine Foundation will visit Copper Cliff Public School for an Endangered Species Presentation for students in Grades 4 to 8 on Monday, May 6th at 9:45 am.

On Wednesday, May 8th, exceptional students are invited to bring their parents to school as they showcase some of their technology skills in the resource room from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.  Parents will learn about the programs being offered to students, how they work and how to access this technology at home. 

Copper Cliff Public School’s School Council is sponsoring Cuddle Up and Read for students from JK to Grade 3.  Parents, family members and friends are invited to enjoy lunch and some time to read with their child.  Parents are asked to RSVP with classroom teachers.

The "Give One, Get One" book exchange will take place from Monday, May 6th to Wednesday, May 8th.  Students from JK to Grade 3 will be encouraged to trade in their gently used books for new ones. The Spring Scholastic Book Fair is also scheduled for Tuesday, May 7th to Friday, May 10th.

Parents and children are invited to attend the Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Tuesday, May 7th from 5:30 pm to 6:45 pm in the school gym.

On Friday, May 10th, former student Tyler Bertuzzi will be at Copper Cliff Public School giving back to his school and community.  Grade 4 to 6 students will join Tyler in a game of floor hockey where Tyler will share some of his OHL skills with the students. 

To boost school spirit and promote physical activity, Grade 7 and 8 students will challenge teachers in doubles badminton all week long during the nutrition breaks.

Cyril Varney Public School

Cyril Varney Public School will host several events during Education Week. To launch the week, students will celebrate character education with an activity called "Character Rocks!".  Character traits will be the focus as each class paints rocks to decorate the school’s flower gardens. 

On Tuesday, May 7th, Cyril Varney will host its Third Annual Family Fun Dance.  All students, families and community members are welcome to join in the fun from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.

On Thursday, May 9th, Cyril Varney Public School will host its Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session for students who are four years of age and are beginning school in the fall.  Parents/guardians and students are welcome to join in some fun activities from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Gatchell School

Gatchell School will celebrate Music Monday on May 6th from 1:15 pm to 2 pm. Family members are welcome to join the students as they sing and play along with their "upcycled" musical instruments.

On Wednesday, May 8th, parents are invited to bring a favourite book and blanket and join their child for a reading picnic between 11:30 am and 1 pm.

Gatchell School will host a tea to honour moms on Thursday, May 9th from 1 pm to 2 pm. Students will serve tea and desserts to their mom, aunt, grandmother or other special person in their life.

Lansdowne Public School

On Monday, May 6th, Sudbury Secondary School’s band and choir will perform for the school at 10 am as part of Music Monday.

On Tuesday, May 7th, all parents and guardians are invited to come in and “Curl Up and Read” with their child from 2 pm to 3 pm.  Books from classroom libraries will be available or you can bring in your favourite book from home. A nutritious snack will be served.

On Wednesday, May 8th, Grade 7 and 8 students will head to Sudbury Secondary School for Technology Day.  They will participate in a number of workshops related to media, art, science and technology.

On Thursday, May 9th, a pep rally will be held in the gym to celebrate Lansdowne Public School’s winning the Edgar Burton Youth Hubby Award with Mellaney Dahl from Q92 radio. This award recognizes the efforts of the snack program at Lansdowne Public School. Welcome to Kindergarten will also take place on Thursday, May 9th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

 

On Friday, May 10th, the staff has organized education stations for students.  All students will be put on multi-grade teams and will have the opportunity to participate in a number of different workshops including arts and crafts, building challenge, healthy cooking and fun fitness. 

Larchwood Public School

Students, staff and School Council have organized a number of Education Week activities to showcase student achievement at Larchwood Public School. On Monday, May 6th, "Larchwood’s Got Talent" will begin at 1:15 pm. Students will entertain the crowd with singing, dancing and the playing of musical instruments. This event is much anticipated by all community members.

On Tuesday, May 7th, family and friends are invited to come out for an evening of fun activities at 6 pm in the school gymnasium. This informal fitness gathering will be a great time to socialize with family, friends and staff, truly demonstrating that the community cares about its students.

Starting on Thursday, May 9th, the junior coed basketball teams will begin competing at the Rainbow District School Board championships. This extra-curricular event compliments the school’s ongoing Healthy Start Fitness initiative for the students

In addition, a spring Book Fair will take place in the school library during Education Week.  Parents and community members are invited to visit the school to purchase books. All proceeds from the book fair will go towards enhancing classroom libraries.

Levack Public School

Education Week at Levack Public School officially begins on Monday, May 6th with Music Monday. Music Monday will showcase the vibrant music program at Levack with a Pop, Rock and Roll concert. Musicians from Grades 1 to 8 will perform a variety of music with rock band instruments. Showtime is 1:45 pm.  All community members are welcome.

On Wednesday, May 8th, intermediate students will participate in the Levack Entrepreneurship Fair. Students have been busy preparing business plans and brochures that will be on display in the gymnasium from 9:30 am to 2 pm. Grade 8 students will be selling a variety of personalized products including food and beverage items.

Education Week wraps up on Friday, May 10th with a community clean-up. Students in all grade levels will be doing their part to ensure the school and surrounding neighbourhood continues to be a clean, welcoming community. Special attention will be given to the walking path between Onaping and Levack.

Markstay Public School

Education Week kicks off with Music Monday on May 6th at 1:30 pm, an event that showcases student talent with singing, dancing and dramatic performances. Spectators will enjoy performances from students using Orff instruments, piano and vocals. Students have been busy rehearsing and parents and community members are welcome to join them in celebrating the gift of music and the arts.

On Wednesday, May 8th, Markstay will welcome future JK students to its Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session. Parents of children four years of age by December 31, 2013 are invited to the school from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm for fun activities.  Future JK students will leave with a bag of resources to help prepare them for their first year of school.

On Thursday, May 9th, Markstay Public School will honour dedicated volunteers, lunch supervisors and bus drivers with an appreciation breakfast at 9 am.

The Scholastic Book Fair will take place from May 6th to May 9th. Books will also be available to purchase after school on Monday, May 6th until 4 pm and Wednesday, May 8th until 5:30 pm.

Monetville Public School

Monetville Public School will celebrate Music Monday on May 6th with a gathering in the gym at 1:35 pm.  Students will sing the official Music Monday song “Is Somebody Singing” written by Astronaut and musician Chris Hadfield and Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies.

Also on Monday, May 6th at 1:35 pm, students from JK to Grade 8 will showcase their talents with various performances at "Monetville’s Got Talent". The school invites parents/guardians and members of the community to join them and participate in their appreciation of music and dance.

A Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) orientation session will be held on Monday, May 6th, from 6 pm to 7 pm and then also on Friday, May 17th, from 1:35 pm to 2:35 pm.  Parents and students new to the Early Learning Kindergarten Program will participate in a variety of school readiness activities, tour the school and take a ride on the big bus learning how to ride safely (afternoon session).

On Friday, May 17th, Eagle House families will participate in planting outdoors and making garden stones from 1:35 pm to 3 pm.  Parents/guardians are invited to attend all of the events.

Northeastern Elementary School

Wednesday, May 8th is Exceptional Students Awareness Day at Northeastern Elementary School. Students in Grades 1 to 8 will participate in workshops offered by a number of community organizations. The presentations are designed to increase student awareness of the wide range of exceptional needs.

In the evening of May 8th, students starting Kindergarten in September 2013 and their parents/guardians are welcome to attend the Welcome to Kindergarten information session. Tour the school, participate in activities and learn about the school’s programs.

Princess Anne Public School

On Monday, May 6th, Princess Anne Public School will kick off Education Week by celebrating Music Monday with a concert. Students from Sudbury Secondary School’s Band will perform for the entire school.

On Tuesday, May 7th, the school will host its annual Reading Picnic from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. Parents/guardians and their children are invited to join students in the gym to read together and enjoy refreshments. Books and food will be provided.

On Thursday, May 9th, Constable Denise Fraser will be at Princess Anne Public School to offer two presentations on bullying.  Students in Grades 4 to 6 will attend the first session from 9:15 am to 10 am.  The second session, from 10 am to 11 am, for students in Grades 7 to 8, will also include a focus on cyber-bullying. Parents are welcome to attend.

On Friday, May 10th, parents/guardians are invited to join Princess Anne Public School at the Laurentian University Track for the annual school track and field meet. Students from Grades 1 to 8 will participate in track and field events.

Queen Elizabeth Public School

On Monday, May 6th, students from Queen Elizabeth Public School will gather to share their musical accomplishments for Music Monday.

On Wednesday, May 8th, new Kindergarten students and their parents/guardians are invited to the "Welcome to Kindergarten" orientation session from 5 pm to 6 pm.  During this event, teachers and Early Childhood Educators will showcase the Early Learning Kindergarten program. 

On Thursday, May 9th at 2 pm, student talent will shine during the Queen Elizabeth Talent Stars showcase.

Redwood Acres Public School

On Monday, May 6th, Redwood Acres Public School will kick off Education Week with a Music Monday concert featuring a sing-a-long with the entire school. The concert will be held in the gym at 11:15 am.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Throughout the week, the class of exceptional students will host a book swap. Students can exchange books they’ve read for books that other students have read.

On Tuesday, May 7th, new Kindergarten students and their parents/guardians are invited to the Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. New registrations are welcome.  All participants will receive a bag of great resources to support their child at home as they prepare to start school in the fall. 

The Grade 2 class will host a Save A Panda Bake Sale on Thursday, May 9th.  They have been learning about how panda habitats are shrinking and want to promote awareness about how we can help make a difference.  All proceeds will go towards adopting a panda through WWF (World Wildlife Fund).

Education Week wraps up with a school-wide Jump Rope for Heart event on Friday, May 10th from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm. 

R. H. Murray Public School

The staff and students of R.H. Murray Public School will launch Education Week by recognizing Music Monday.  The entire school will meet together in the gym to watch the Grade 7/8 Air Band and the Grade 3/4 Cup Band.

On Tuesday, May 7th, the Grade 5/6 class will share their inventions and infomercials created in science class, with the entire school.

Parents have been invited to read with their child on Friday, May 10th.  The school is hoping for nice weather so that families can bring a blanket, sit outside and enjoy a good book together.

R.L. Beattie Public School

Throughout the week, classes will participate in a school-wide Math Challenge each day. Classes that complete the challenges will receive a prize at the end of the week.

On Monday, May 6th, students and staff will celebrate Music Monday. Students will showcase their musical talents at an assembly in the gym at 11:45 am. The community is welcome to see the school’s Franco Rainbow talent show winners.

On Wednesday, May 8th, the Early Learning Kindergarten classrooms will honour mothers. R.L. Beattie will host “Muffins for Mom” from 9 am to 10 am for all Early Learning Kindergarten mothers.

On Thursday, May 9th, R.L. Beattie will present its annual Track and Field day. Students from Grades 3 to 8 will participate in track and field activities throughout the day.

On Friday, May 10th, the Grade 3 classes will host a pancake breakfast at 9 am, the culmination of their pioneer unit. They invite parents to join them. They will end Education Week with a school-wide “Curl Up and Read Day”. Parents are invited to come in at 2 pm to read with their child. Students can wear their pajamas and bring their favourite book to school.

S. Geiger Public School

S. Geiger students will kick off Education Week by celebrating Music Monday on May 6th.  Students will sing Is Somebody Singing written by astronaut and musician Chris Hadfield and Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies. 

A book fair will take place on Monday, May 6th and Tuesday, May 7th.  Parents and community members are welcome to visit the library to view the books for sale. 

The school has teamed up with many community organizations to provide relevant safety information in fun interactive presentations. On Monday, May 6th, the local fire department will set up several demonstrations and informative presentations on fire safety. 

On Tuesday, May 7th, Rainbow Routes Association will provide an interactive session on school bike safety. Students in Grades 3 to 8 are asked to bring a bike helmet to school for the presentation. 

On Wednesday, May 8th, S. Geiger staff and School Council will welcome new Junior Kindergarten students to the school. Students and their parents/guardians are invited to the school from 5 pm to 6 pm to meet some new friends and staff. The local bus company will deliver a brief presentation on how to ride the school bus safely and students will practice loading and unloading the bus. 

A community police officer will join staff and students on Friday, May 10th, to speak about personal safety.      

      

On Thursday, May 9th, Grade 8 students will travel to Espanola High School for a tour of the school facilities and an introduction to the school programs. They will have an opportunity to meet staff members to help with the transition to high school. 

Valley View Public School

Education Week will feature mining and exploration activities for Junior students. As an extension of Earth Day, the staff and students will participate in an outdoor clean up of the schoolyard.

Walden Public School

On Monday, May 6th, classes will celebrate Music Monday by performing a variety of songs in the gym.  Students will be united in song under the leadership of music teacher Stacey Foy.  

On Wednesday, May 8th, Walden Public School will host a Welcome to Kindergarten session from 9:15 am to 10:30 am for parents of students starting Kindergarten in the fall.  This is a great opportunity for parents and new JK students to meet the staff and explore the school’s beautiful facilities while engaging in school readiness activities. 

Teacher Jennifer Dewit will host a "Stay and Play" event for parents in the French Immersion Kindergarten class on Friday, May 10th.  Parents can come and see what their children do each day as they learn through play-based activities. 

Webbwood Public School

Education Week will begin on Monday, May 6th with a visit from local fire safety officials.  The afternoon will feature a Music Monday celebration where students will share their special talents and the Music Monday song with parents and members of the community. 

On Tuesday, May 7th, students will participate in a Bicycle Safety Clinic. 

To end the week, Webbwood Public School will host a Scholastic Book Fair and a Welcome to Kindergarten session for the future Wildcats.

Westmount Avenue Public School

Westmount Avenue Public School will celebrate Education Week starting with Music Monday on May 6th. The entire school will gather in the gymnasium to sing "Toi et moi" (You and Me), which corresponds with this month’s character trait – acceptance.  Following the song, three groups will perform their Franco-Rainbow lip sync number.

Throughout the week, parents will be invited into their child’s classroom to participate in various classroom activities, including a three-part math lesson, poetry writing and a magic show.

On Friday, May 10th, all students will participate in the school’s Jump for Rope kick off event.

SECONDARY

Lasalle Secondary School

The Lasalle Guitar Ensemble will host a concert tour to celebrate Education Week. There were performances at Carl A. Nesbitt Public School and Cyril Varney Public School the week of April 29th. A final performance will take place at Northeastern Elementary School on Friday, May 3rd.  All performances begin at 12:20 pm. The ensemble performs a wide range of music from the Renaissance period right up to the Beatles.

Sudbury Secondary School

Sudbury Secondary School will kick off Education Week by participating in Music Monday. Over 600,000 participants in Canada (and growing) get together annually on the first Monday in May to celebrate the gift of music. The vocal and instrumental music students at Sudbury Secondary School will visit nearby elementary schools to provide an interactive concert that will include the Music Monday song Is Somebody Singing and other crowd pleasing performances.

On Monday, May 6th and Wednesday, May 8th, students from Lansdowne Public School and Princess Anne Public School will be welcomed by students and staff of Sudbury Secondary School and will participate in six workshops. Students will visit the new facilities and experience all that Sudbury Secondary School has to offer.

On Wednesday, May 8th, the photography, visual, fashion, and media arts students will have their work on display for public viewing. The gallery opening will occur on Wednesday, May 8th from 6 pm to 8 pm. The hospitality students will prepare refreshments and the vocal music department will provide entertainment. Everyone is welcome to attend this event. The exhibition will also be open during school hours on May 9th and 10th.

SSS vocal music students will host a talent Coffee House on Thursday, May 9th, featuring selections of various pieces. The hospitality students will prepare refreshments for this free event.

The SSS vocal and instrumental music students will head to the Sudbury Theatre Centre to view a matinée performance on Thursday, May 9th.

The Student Advisory Team will lead workshops for the Grade 9 students to provide them with tools to live in a happy and healthy school community. Workshops will include Stress Free Exams and Great Nutrition. This will take place in the school library on Friday, May 10th.
