Rainbow Schools celebrate Education Week from May 1 to 5, 2017

Rainbow Schools will mark Education Week from Monday, May 1 to Friday, May 5, 2017. “Education week provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate teaching excellence, student achievement, parental involvement and exceptional community support in Rainbow Schools,” says Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. This year’s theme is Ontario150 in recognition of Ontario and Canada’s 150th anniversary.

During Education Week, Indigenous author Dr. Jenny Kay Dupuis will visit Little Current Public School on Monday, May 1 to share her book I Am Not a Number. Dr. Dupuis will then host a workshop for teachers on Tuesday, May 2 and Wednesday, May 3 at the Lexington Hotel. The Blanket Exercise will be performed as a teaching tool to explore the historic and contemporary relationship of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. Also on May 2, Dr. Dupuis will host a presentation at Queen Elizabeth II Public School from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. She will talk about the impact of residential schools and moving forward with Truth and Reconciliation. Everyone is welcome.

Algonquin Road Public School
Algonquin Road Public School will celebrate Education Week with a number of activities. The Primary students will join their Reading Buddies in the Junior grades to work on learning activities about Ontario, the community, and Canada. In keeping with Canada 150 learning and reconciliation, Grade 8 students will read I Am Not a Number by Jenny Kay Dupuis and Kathy Kacer and learn the lasting impact of residential schools in both Ontario and Canada. The Intermediate students will also spend time during the week recreating and researching the Ontario 150 and Canada 150 logos in visual art. They will share their artwork and their findings with students in the younger grades.

Assiginack Public School
On Monday, May 1, the Student Council from Manitoulin Secondary School will visit the Grade 7/8 class. The Grade 5/6 class will visit the Noojamadaa Exhibit at the Debajehmujig Creation Centre. This photo exhibit features works by First Nations Women from Manitoulin Island and Whitefish River First Nation. On Tuesday, May 2, Assiginack Public School will participate in the Battle of the Books competition at Central Manitoulin Public School. The Scholastic Book Fair will also begin May 2 and run until Thursday, May 4. Wednesday, May 3, students in Grades 1, 2 and 3 will visit Science North in Sudbury. Grades 4, 7 and 8 students will visit Debajehmujig to see the Noojamadaa Exhibit. Parents and the public are invited to the school on Thursday, May 4 at 1:45 pm to take part in the Did You Know Canadian Facts Kahoot game. This school-wide event will take place in the gym. Friday, May 5, Grade 3/4 students will travel to the Espanola Recreational Complex to start their Swim to Survive sessions. Grade 5, 6, 7 and 8 students will take part in Ribbons, Shirts, and Skirts at the school.

C.R. Judd Public School
C.R. Judd Public School will kick off Education Week with Music Monday and a celebration assembly on Monday, May 1 at 12:15 pm in the gym. Parents/guardians are invited to attend. On Tuesday, May 2, students in Grades 5 to 7 will head to the Sudbury Theatre Centre to see the play Hockey Dreams. Primary and Junior students will participate in a city-wide reading of the book, Small Saul by Ashley Spires. Students will be able to swap books at the book exchange in the library. On Wednesday, May 3, Junior and Intermediate students will take part in a rail safety presentation by CN Special Constable Teresa Knorz. On Thursday, May 4, Primary students will attend a contemporary dance performance at Sudbury Secondary School. The Grade 3/4 class will participate in the Swim to Survive program. On Friday, May 5, Grade 6, 7 and 8 students will celebrate their history through the Heritage Fair presentations at Laurentian University.

Carl A. Nesbitt Public School
Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will celebrate Education Week starting with Music Monday on Monday, May 1. Tuesday, May 2, the school will have a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) play day for parents and students. Friday, May 5, all students from Carl A. Nesbitt Public School, Ernie Checkeris Public School, and Churchill Public School will walk together to the Royal Bank to present donations collected for Maison McCulloch Hospice in Sudbury.

Central Manitoulin Public School
On Monday, May 1, Central Manitoulin Public School will host a Volunteer Appreciation Social at 3:30 pm. Staff and students will show appreciation to their many volunteers by providing snacks and special entertainment. On Tuesday, May 2, the school will host Battle of the Books for Manitoulin Island schools. Thursday, May 4, workshops on various topics pertaining to the annual Fall Fair will be held at the school. All students will participate in a variety of workshops including cheese making, sewing, painting, gardening, etc. Also on Thursday, May 4, parents/guardians and future students are invited to Kindergarten Orientation at 5 pm. A Book Fair and Family Dance will also be held on Thursday, May 4 starting at 5:30 pm. Representatives from Hydro One will visit the school on Friday, May 5 to talk to students about electrical safety.

Chelmsford Public School
Chelmsford Public School’s annual Talent Show will be held on Wednesday, May 3 with performances at 11:30 am and 6 pm. Students and parents are invited to visit the schoolís book fair, which is open during school hours from Monday, May 1 to Friday, May 5. Students will participate in a schoolyard and community clean up on Friday, May 5 at 2:15 pm.

Charles C. McLean Public School
Charles C. McLean Public School will host a spring concert entitled “Canada 150.” The concert will be held on Thursday, May 4 at 6:30 pm. Everyone in the community is welcome.

Copper Cliff Public School
On Monday, May 1, from 3:05 pm to 4:30 pm, an Open House will be held at Copper Cliff Public School. Activities will include Boat and Bridge Building, Draw and Tell app, Mindfulness, Coding, Math Games, and more. On Tuesday, May 2, several classes will take a field trip to Science North. Kindergarten Orientation will take place from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm on Wednesday, May 3. Future students will participate in a scavenger hunt around the school to get to know the staff and school. Thursday, May 4, ISP classes will attend the Blacklight Show at Jean Hanson Public School. Throughout the week, a badminton tournament will be organized for Grade 7 and 8 students to play against their teachers. A Scholastic Book Fair will be set up from Monday, May 1 to Wednesday, May 3.

Cyril Varney Public School
Cyril Varney Public School will begin Education week on Monday, May 1 with a Music Monday event in the gym. During the assembly, a school-wide story will be announced. Each class will write a page, and the story will be assembled and read on Friday, May 5. Tuesday, May 2, the school will host its Kindergarten Orientation from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. A Character Education Assembly will be held Wednesday, May 3, at 9:30 am in the gym. A Spring Family Dance will be held on Thursday, May 4 at 6 pm in the gym. Parents/guardians are invited to attend student led conferences on Friday, May 5.

Ernie Checkeris Public School

Lansdowne Public School
Lansdowne Public School will start Education Week by participating in the Reading Town Read-Aloud on Tuesday, May 2. On Wednesday, May 3, the school will host its Kindergarten Orientation from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Parents and families are invited to attend the Math & Munch event, to play math games with their children on Friday, May 5, from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm. Throughout Education Week, from Monday, May 1 to Friday, May 5, Grades 6, 7, and 8 students will participate in various activities from the ParticipACTION 150 Play List.

Levack Public School
On Monday, May 1, Levack Public School will kick off Education Week with a Music Monday celebration, titled, Sing for joy. Sing for healing. Sing for freedom. The community is invited to attend this free concert in the school gym at 1 pm. The concert will feature live performances from the Levack Rock Band, the Levack Choir, and the St. Bartholomew Adult Choir. On Thursday, May 4, parents/guardians and future students are welcome for Kindergarten Orientation at 5 pm. On Friday, May 5, students in the Grade 4 to 8 French Immersion Program will attend the Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair. Also on May 5, the Greater Sudbury Public Library Makerspace Program will be set up in the school gymnasium. Students will also be able to obtain library cards.

Little Current Public School
On Monday, May 1, Grade 5 and 6 students at Little Current Public School will welcome Dr. Jenny Kay Dupuis, Indigenous educator and co-author of I am Not A Number. The students will learn about truth and Indigenous realities through her first children’s book which she co-wrote about her granny’s experience at a residential school. As well, students in Grades 4 and 5 will host Debra Tate of M’Chigeeng First Nation. Debra will share her knowledge of the Teachings of the Circle. On Tuesday, May 2, students will participate in Battle of the Books, a literacy competition at Central Manitoulin Public School. On Thursday, May 4, students will continue to learn new Indigenous games/skills in preparation for the 1st Indigenous Games to be hosted by Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute on Wednesday, May 31, 2017. Friday, May 5, the school’s Coyote Council is planning STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) electives for all students. These activities will take place from 11:20 am to 3 pm. Education Week continues on Monday, May 8, with a family event of student led math games and a book fair. The math games will take place from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm and the Book Fair will be open to parents from 9 am to 12:30 and 1 pm to 6:30 pm.

MacLeod Public School
Students at MacLeod Public School will host a Music Monday concert on Monday, May 1 at 2:15 pm, in the gym. On Wednesday, May 3, Sudbury Young Singers will perform songs in the foyer at 2:15 pm. On Thursday, May 4, MacLeod will host their Kindergarten Orientation from 12 pm to 1 pm and 5 pm to 6 pm.

Monetville Public School
On Monday, May 1, Grade 7 and 8 students will take part in the Young Women’s Conference and the Skills Competition in Toronto. All students will take part in Sing it Together for Music Monday. On Tuesday, May 2, all students will see the Hazard Hamlet Hydro Safety presentation. Kindergarten Orientation will take place on Wednesday, May 3 from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm. On Thursday, May 4 the school will join Kikendawt Kinoomaadii Gamig School for their first annual Science Showcase in the gym. The public is invited for this event. Monetville Idol will take place at 1:35 pm, in the school gym on Friday, May 5. Students will showcase their artistic talents through songs, dance and skits. Everyone is welcome.

Northeastern Elementary School
Northeastern Elementary School will start Education week with a Character Education assembly on Monday, May 1, celebrating the character trait of courtesy and learning about courage. Tuesday, May 2, the school will celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Parents will be welcome to attend the festivities between 9 am and 10:30 am. On Wednesday, May 3, Northeastern will host Annual Awareness Day. Students will participate in workshops and sessions highlighting various abilities. Parents are welcome from 9:10 am to 12:50 pm. Northeastern will celebrate Earth Day by hosting the Sudbury EARTH Dancers, who will showcase their commitment to the Earth. The performance will be followed by a community cleanup. From 6 pm to 6:45 pm, the school will host a family ZUMBA Night in the gym. Refreshments and snacks will be served. The school will also host a Scholastic Book Fair in the library from Monday, May 1 to Thursday, May 4.

Pinecrest Public School
Students and staff at Pinecrest Public School will celebrate Education Week, and Ontario’s 150th anniversary. On Monday, May 1, Pinecrest students and staff will sing the Music Monday song with students from across Canada. Their Concert Band will perform their festival pieces for the school community. ISP students will make Canada 150 posters to display, and students will research Canadian symbols with classroom discussions. All students will participate by singing the Ontario 150 song.

Princess Anne Public School
Throughout Education Week, Princess Anne Public School students will participate in a variety of activities. A talent show will be held on Wednesday, May 3 at 6 pm. Also on May 3, the school will start its Jump Rope for Heart campaign. During the week, students will take field trips around the community, including Dynamic Earth, Lake Laurentian and the Blacklight show at Jean Hanson Public School.

Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Queen Elizabeth II Public School will kick off Education Week with its annual talent show on Monday, May 1. The school will host author Dr. Jenny Kay Dupuis the evening of May 2, to discuss the impact of residential schools and moving forward with Truth and Reconciliation. Everyone is welcome. Many classes will attend the Blacklight Theatre at Jean Hanson Public School throughout Education Week. The school’s Kindergarten classes will visit the Imax Theatre on Thursday, May 4. The school will also hold a kick-off assembly for this year’s Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser.

R. H. Murray Public School
On Monday, May 1, R.H. Murray Public School will celebrate Music Monday with a presentation in the gym at 1:45 PM. The assembly will include performances from the school choir and the Kiwanis winning recorder groups, as well as special presentations from the Cambrian College School of Music. This assembly is open to the public. The school will continue to explore arts education through a dance presentation at Sudbury Secondary School on Wednesday, May 3 at 9:45 am. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 will attend a performance by the Canadian Contemporary Dance Company. Later in the week, students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 will participate in the Water First Watershed Restoration Project, learning about the water challenges in First Nations communities and understanding the importance of clean water. Activities include tree planting at Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation, ecology studies, water analysis and various components of freshwater habitats. On Thursday, May 4 and Friday, May 5, Grade 7 and 8 students will showcase their business skills at the school’s entrepreneur fair. On the same days, several projects will be showcased at this year’s Heritage Fair at Laurentian University.

R.L. Beattie Public School
R.L Beattie Public School will start Education Week by participating in MP Paul Lefebvre’s literacy challenge. Grade 5 students will see Hockey Dreams at the Sudbury Theatre Centre. Students will create a “Friendship Chain,” displaying messages of hope for Canadians. The week will culminate with a Scholastic Book Fair and a special Canada Day celebration. Students are invited to wear red and white.

Redwood Acres Public School
Redwood Acres Public School will kick off Education Week with a Music Monday concert on Monday, May 1. The theme of the concert will be Canada’s 150th birthday. All students and staff are encouraged to wear red and white. The concert will take place in the gym at 11:30 am. Parents are invited to attend the celebration. On Tuesday, May 2 and Thursday, May 4, students will participate in workshops on growth mindset by the Sudbury and District Health Unit. Students will learn different ways to grow their brains, and how having a growth mindset can help them to be successful. On Thursday, May 4, parents will be invited to a lunchtime parent workshop about growth mindset. On Wednesday, May 3, the Greater Sudbury Public Library will visit Redwood Acres and provide students with literacy-based workshops. In addition, a book exchange will be held for all students in the library. On Friday, May 5, the Tour for Humanity (T4H) will stop at Redwood Acres Public School. The T4H is a 30-seat, wheelchair accessible, state-of-the-art, technologically advanced mobile education centre where information is presented on the effects of hate and intolerance. The purpose is to inspire people of all ages, and backgrounds, empowering them to raise their voices and take action against hate, intolerance and bullying and to promote justice and human rights.

Valley View Public School
Education Week at Valley View Public School will begin on Monday, May 1 with a Music Monday assembly with school band performance. Kindergarten students are invited to bring in their favourite books to read aloud to the class. Parents/guardians of teacher Liz Herd’s Kindergarten students are welcome to drop in on Tuesday, May 2, from 11:35 am to 12:35 pm. Parents/guardians are invited on Wednesday, May 3 from 2 pm to 3 pm for a Family Fun Math Hour to play math games with their child. Grade 1 and 2 classes will take part in a city-wide Read Aloud. Grade 2 students will learn the French Canadian folk dance “La bastringue.” They will dress in traditional clothing and perform the dance. Grade 2 students will also visit Science North. Thursday, May 4, Primary teachers will combine classes to play math games. Students will meet Constable Ward and his police dog Scout. Grade 3 French Immersion students will continue working on 21st century learning by demonstrating their writing through media presentations. Junior students will participate in the Fast Flowing Water poster contest. Grade 7 and 8 students will learn about coding.

Westmount Avenue Public School
Thursday, May 4, students at Westmount Avenue Public School will showcase their 21st Century Learning initiatives. Parents are invited to attend classes where they will learn how to code with their child.

Lively District Secondary School
On Thursday, May 4 from 12 pm to 1 pm, the award winning Robohawks team from Lively District Secondary School will visit Walden Public School to discuss the past, present and future of technology education.
