Rainbow Schools celebrate Education Week May 7 to 11, 2012
“Education Week provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate teaching excellence, student achievement, parental involvement and exceptional community support in Rainbow Schools,” says Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board.
ELEMENTARY
A.B. Ellis Public School
The launch of Education Week coincides with Music Monday. A.B. Ellis Public School will host a concert in the gym featuring performances by the Junior Division at A.B. Ellis and classes from S. Geiger Public School. The concert will take place Monday, May 7th at 6:30 pm.
A.B. Ellis Public School will host its Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) workshop for students entering Junior Kindergarten and their parents/guardians on Wednesday, May 9th at 5:30 pm.
Adamsdale Public School
Adamsdale Public School will celebrate Music Monday on May 7th. Students will sing the Music Monday song by Luke Doucet, “Tomorrow is Coming”, as an introduction to a school talent show entitled “The A Factor.” A variety of popular vocal, acoustic and dance routines will be performed, highlighting the talent of students. The show will start at 1:45 pm in the gym. Everyone is welcome.
Adamsdale Public School will host an Autism Awareness Day on Thursday, May 10th. Autism bracelets may be purchased for $2 each. Information regarding autism will be sent home with students and displayed in the school.
A Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) orientation session will be held at Adamsdale Public School on Thursday, May 10th, from 2 pm to 3 pm. Parents and students new to the Early Learning Kindergarten Program will participate in a variety of school readiness activities, including a tour of the school.
Alexander Public School
Alexander Public School will host two Literacy Celebrations on Thursday, May 10th. There will be a Bilingual Book Fair in the gymnasium from 9 am to 6 pm. Parents and students are invited to browse and purchase French and English books by their favourite authors. Parents and students are also invited to a Junior Author Fair. Students from Grades 2 to 5, who are currently working on publishing pieces of French and English writing, will display and share their works from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Visitors will be encouraged to interact with the Young Authors during their visit to the Fair.
Assiginack Public School
Assiginack Public School will present its Welcome to Kindergarten activities on Tuesday, May 8th from 4 pm to 5 pm. All students starting JK this fall and parents/guardians are invited to attend.
Also on Tuesday, May 8th, Assiginack will host an Open House from 6 pm to 7 pm, with activities in all grades: Kindergarten – Arts Studio; Grades1/2 – Voice in Writing; Grades 3/4 Ipads Math and Literacy; Grades 5/6 – Media Literacy; Grades 7/8 – Zines/ Poetry and Animation.
C.C. McLean Public School
Grades 1 to 3 students will attend the ballet presentation “Swan Lake” hosted by Manitoulin Secondary School on Tuesday, May 8th. The performers are all members of the Island School of Ballet.
C.C. McLean will host its Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session for JK students starting in the fall. The session runs from 6 pm – 7 pm on Wednesday, May 9th. Parents and students new to Kindergarten will participate in early learning activities.
Junior and Intermediate soccer players will take part in the Island Soccer Tournament on May 10th hosted by Wikwemikong (junior) and Central Manitoulin Public School (intermediate).
Carl A. Nesbitt Public School
As a prelude to Education Week, Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will host a Fun Fair on Thursday, May 3rd from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. On Friday, May 4th, Grade 7 and 8 students will participate in the “Absolute”, stand up against bullying workshop from 10 am to 11 am. Grade 6 students will attend the Heritage Fair.
Education Week kicks off on Monday, May 7th with a Music Monday concert. Each grade will perform outside (weather permitting) or in the gym at noon. Students have been invited to wear school colours and/or spirit wear for a group photo.
Education Week continues on Tuesday, May 8th with a French Immersion presentation featuring Gregg LeRock at Lockerby Composite School. Grade 6 and 8 students will take part in the event from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.
Grade 7 and 8 students from Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will participate in the Sudbury Teachers Lions Scrabble Competition on Wednesday, May 9th at the Laurentian University School of Education.
A Parent Literacy Workshop will take place on Thursday, May 10th from 1:30 pm to 3 pm. Grade 7 students will participate in an Entrepreneurial Fair in the Nesbitt gym on Friday, May 11th from 9 am to 2 pm.
Central Manitoulin Public School
Central Manitoulin Public School will host its Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session for JK students starting school this fall and their parents/guardians on Wednesday, May 9th from 5 pm to 6:30 pm.
Also on Wednesday, May 9th, there will be a play in the Grade 1 classroom from 5:30 pm to 6 pm, a Poetry Cafe from 6 pm to 6:30 pm, and a Math Tea from 6:30 pm to 7 pm. There will also be Grade 7 and 8 Heritage Fair displays in the school gymnasium from 6 pm to 7 pm. The public is welcome
Central Manitoulin Public School will host the Intermediate Island Soccer Tournament on Thursday, May 10th. Games will be played from 10 am to 2 pm. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer on the teams.
Chelmsford Public School
Chelmsford Public School will host a Scholastic Book Fair from Tuesday, May 8th to Thursday, May 10th. The fair will be open to the community from 10 am to 4 pm and from 5:30 pm to 6 pm on Wednesday night. Families are encouraged to visit the Scholastic Book Fair to share the gift of reading with their children.
A Celebration of Music and Movement Show will take place at Chelmsford Public School on Wednesday, May 9th. Families are invited to enjoy a pizza lunch with their children, followed by the annual Chelmsford show. Students are proud to share their many talents with the school community. Show times are 1:30 pm and
6 pm in the gym. Admission is one non-perishable food item, which will be donated to the Valley North local food bank.
Chelmsford Public School will host a VIP Luncheon, on Thursday, May 10th. Staff and students will welcome very special volunteers to thank them for their countless hours of work in the school. Thanks to the generous contribution of volunteers, Chelmsford Public School offers a daily Breakfast Program, reading programs, has chaperones for field trips and much more!
Churchill Public School
Churchill Public School will present Disney’s Cinderella Kids during Education Week. Students in Grades 4 to 8 have been hard at work since January preparing for their production of the classic tale of Cinderella. A Grade 6 student at the school was responsible for the choreography. Students also designed the sets. The play is appropriate for students in Kindergarten to Grade 6. Performances run from Wednesday, May 9th to Friday, May 11th at 10 am and 6 pm.
Copper Cliff Public School
Copper Cliff Public School will host a number of activities in advance of Education Week, beginning with a Welcome to Kindergarten evening. Parents and new JK students are invited to attend the WTK orientation session on Tuesday, May 1st from 5:30 pm to 7 pm in the school gym.
The Scholastic Luau Book Fair will be open to students and families on Tuesday, May 1st from 9 am to 7 pm, Wednesday, May 2nd from 9 am to 6 pm and Thursday, May 3rd from 9 am to 3 pm. All proceeds will support the purchase of books and magazines for the classrooms and library at Copper Cliff Public School.
On Wednesday, May 2nd, the Grade 4/5 class will attend the Mining Matters workshop at Dynamic Earth.
On Thursday, May 3rd, from1:15 pm to 2:15 pm, Copper Cliff Public School will host its annual Talent Show. Parents and families are always welcome!
On Friday, May 4th, from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm, Copper Cliff Public School will join the Community Action Network and Citizens on Patrol for the Sharon Milligan Community Clean up Day. Everyone is invited to come out to volunteer and keep the community clean and green!
During Education Week, on Wednesday, May 9th, Copper Cliff students will participate in Walden Public School’s Battle of the Books.
On Friday, May 11th, students from Grade 4/5 will participate in their annual Medieval Feast. Dressed in period costumes, and having researched the various characters of the middle ages, students will enjoy a celebration and potluck lunch from 11 am to 1 pm.
Cyril Varney Public School
On Monday, May 7th, 2012, the Cyril Varney Public School Choir will join the Interlink Intergenerational Choir to present “Down Memory Lane – A Tribute to Warna Timlock.” The students and seniors have been exchanging pen pal letters and singing songs together throughout the school year. Warna Timlock was a founding member of the Sudbury Interlink Intergenerational Choir who passed away last summer. The concert will take place at 7 pm at St. Andrew’s Place. There is no cost to attend, but a $2 donation would be appreciated. Everyone is welcome.
On Tuesday, May 8th, from 9:15 am to 10:30 am, Cyril Varney will host the St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog Program. Handler Debra Dupuis and dog Rusty will read with small groups of children who have been part of Cyril Varney’s Everyone’s a Reader Program. These children have made tremendous progress learning to read this year. Rusty will help them celebrate their progress.
The spring weather is arriving and many Cyril Varney students are learning to ride their bicycles or are riding their bicycles to school. On Tuesday, May 8th, the Brain Injury Association of Sudbury will present a Brain Injury Prevention workshop from 1:30 pm to 2:45 pm. Kindergarten to Grade 3 students will learn about bicycle helmet safety. This presentation will focus on the importance of protecting the brain from injury while still enjoying the joys of riding a bike.
Cyril Varney Public School will host its annual Welcome to Kindergarten Night on Tuesday, May 8th at 6 pm. The orientation session is for all Junior Kindergarten students starting school in the fall of 2012 and their parents/guardians.
On Wednesday, May 9th, Cyril Varney Public School will welcome Leo Frappier from Greater Sudbury Fire Services. Leo Frappier will teach Grade 6 students about fire safety through a fun, active, educational game. Two teams of Grade 6 students will compete against each other to determine how much they know about fire safety. The presentation will take place in Cyril Varney’s gymnasium at 9 am.
On Thursday, May 10th, members of the Sudbury and District Quilting and Stitchery Guild will visit the Grade 4 class. Two members of the guild will be bringing quilt samples and stitched works to share with the children. The Grade 4 class is working on a quilt and will welcome the expertise of Guild members.
Beginning at 6 pm on Thursday, May 10th Cyril Varney will hold its Annual Family Dance Night. Parents and students will be joining a DJ in the gymnasium to spend a fun, family evening dancing the night away. Since Cyril Varney has had students teaching Vumba in the school gymnasium during nutrition breaks throughout the school year, it is sure to be an energized event. Family and community members are welcome to join in.
On Friday, May 11th members of the Greater Sudbury Lacrosse Association will be at Cyril Varney to share the history of this great Canadian game with the Grade 6 students. Students will learn lacrosse skills and use lacrosse equipment with experienced players and coaches.
During the afternoon of Friday, May 11th, Cyril Varney will host its Annual Art Show. All family and community members are welcome to tour the school gymnasium to view student works of art.
Ernie Checkeris Public School
Parents, guardians, friends, and family of Ernie Checkeris Public School are invited to celebrate Music Monday on May 7th with an assembly at 2 pm. The Checkeris Choir will sing at Pioneer Manor at 9:30 am on Tuesday, May 8th.
Ernie Checkeris Public School will host its Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Wednesday, May 9th from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. New Kindergarten students and their parents/guardians will enjoy an open house, bus ride and activities.
On Friday, May 11th, Ernie Checkeris Public School will host a Mother’s Day Tea for JK, SK, SK/1 from 11 am to Noon and Grade 1, 2 and 3 from 2 pm to 3 pm.
As a final activity to celebrate Education Week, all students will participate in workshops at Science North on Monday, May 14th and Wednesday, May 16th.
Gatchell School
Gatchell School will celebrate Music Monday on May 7th from 1:15 pm to 2 pm. Each class will prepare a musical performance for the event. Family members are welcome to attend.
Gatchell School will host a tea to celebrate moms on Wednesday, May 9th at 1:15 pm. Students will bake scrumptious desserts to serve to their mom, aunt, grandmother or other special person in their life.
Lansdowne Public School
On Monday, May 7th, Lansdowne Public School students and staff will participate in dance workshops led by the Grade 7 and 8 students.
On Tuesday, May 8th, students and family members will “Curl Up and Read” a good book together at school from 2 pm to 3 pm. Nutritious snacks will be served and parents and students will have an opportunity to win a book bag of read alouds to take home.
“Artists on Lansdowne” will take place on Wednesday, May 9th. Students will respond to illustrations from a read aloud. Each class will display their artwork and the school will have a gallery walk to showcase the fine artwork created.
Lansdowne Public School will host its Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Wednesday, May 9th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The school’s newest students and their families will be invited to visit the Early Leaning Kindergarten classrooms as they get ready to start school this fall.
On Thursday, May 10th, students will engage in a series of educational stations in cross-grade teams. Activities will include building challenges, cooking nutritious snacks, fitness fun and read alouds.
Education Week at Lansdowne Public School will culminate on Friday, May 11th with a visit to Chapters. Students from each class will be selected to go to Chapters to choose a few books from a class wish list. The books will be added to the school library.
Larchwood Public School
Students, staff and School Council have organized a number of Education Week activities to showcase student achievement at Larchwood Public School. On Thursday, May 10th, “Larchwood’s Got Talent” will begin at 1:30 pm. Students will sing, dance and play guitar and drums. This event is much anticipated by all community members. A spring Book Fair will take place in the Larchwood Public School library throughout Education Week. Parents and community members are invited to visit the school to purchase books. All proceeds from the book fair will go towards enhancing classroom libraries.
MacLeod Public School
Parents and guardians of students at MacLeod Public School are invited to join the Music Monday performance in the main gym at the Wembley site on Monday, May 7th at 11 am. The school band and choir will perform for Grades 3 to 5 classes.
Parents/guardians are always welcome to visit the school, but a special invitation is being extended to parents/guardians to drop in the afternoon of Tuesday, May 8th, to sit in on a regular class – for the entire class or a few minutes, as time permits.
Grade 8 students will participate in the Entrepreneurship Fair on Thursday, May 10th and Friday, May 11th from 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm. Projects will be set up in the gym at the Wembley site.
Markstay Public School
At Markstay Public School, several events are planned to celebrate student achievement in the arts, in literacy and in numeracy during Education Week.
Education Week kicks off with Music Monday on May 7th, an event meant to showcase student talent with singing, dancing and dramatic performances. Spectators will enjoy performances from students using Orff instruments, piano and vocals. Students have been busy rehearsing and parents and community members are welcome to join them in celebrating the gift of music and the arts.
On Wednesday, May 9th, Markstay will welcome a lively group of future JK students to the classroom as part of the Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) orientation session. Parents of children four years of age by December 31, 2012 are invited to the school from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm for fun activities. Future JK students will leave with a bag of resources to help prepare them for their first year of school.
On Thursday, May 10th, Markstay Public School will celebrate its third annual Family Math Night. This year’s theme is Math in the Home. Students and their families will participate in many hands-on activities that celebrate mathematics in real-life contexts. The activities are intended to provide examples of how to engage in math talk at home and to incorporate math learning in simple and fun ways through everyday activities. Dinner will be provided.
The Scholastic Book Fair will take place throughout Education Week. Books will be for sale during Math Night on Thursday, May 10th.
Monetville Public School
Monetville Public School will host a Music Monday Concert at 2 pm on Monday, May 7th. Local artist and special guest, Mike Casey, will perform. Everyone is welcome. Also on Monday, May 7th, Monetville Public School will host a boating course from 6 pm to 10 pm.
On Wednesday, May 9th, all Kindergarten students registered to start school in September 2012 are invited to take part in a Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session at 9:30 am.
Education Week will culminate on Thursday, May 10th, when Monetville Public School honours its volunteers, bus drivers and lunch supervisors at its annual Appreciation Breakfast at 9:30 am.
Northeastern Elementary School
Northeastern Elementary School will host new Cougar families at its Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Monday, May 7th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. New registrants will be introduced to the fun learning activities they will experience at school in the coming years.
On Wednesday, May 9th, students from Grades 1 to 8 at Northeastern Elementary School will participate in the second annual Exceptional Needs Awareness Day from 9:30 am to 3 pm. Students will participate in a variety of sessions that will bring awareness to and support for students with exceptional needs. Northeastern welcomes new presenters this year – Kids Help Phone, Children’s Treatment Centre (CTC) and Health Sciences North to educate kids about kids with cancer. Parents and community members are welcome to attend.
Throughout Education Week, a variety of classes will work together to create an outdoor classroom. Through their efforts, students will explore plant growth, different species of plants and insects, as well as the impact of maintaining a garden. Parents and community members are encouraged to stop by Northeastern Elementary School to watch the progress being made.
Princess Anne Public School
On Tuesday, May 8th, Princess Anne Public School will kick off Education Week by celebrating Music Monday with an evening concert. The concert will take place at 6:30 pm. Parents/guardians are invited to attend to celebrate Princess Anne’s great instrumental music program and primary choir.
On Wednesday, May 9th, parents/guardians are invited to join Princess Anne Public School at the Laurentian University Track for the annual school track and field meet. Students from Grades 1 to 8 will participate in track and field events.
On Thursday, May 10th, Princess Anne Public School will host its annual Welcome to Kindergarten evening from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. All Junior Kindergarten students starting school in September 2012, along with their families, are invited to the school to participate in many fun learning activities.
Queen Elizabeth Public School
To celebrate Education Week, students at Queen Elizabeth Public School will participate in Music Monday on May 7th with a musical presentation in the gym at 1:50 pm. On Tuesday, May 8th, new Kindergarten students and their parents/guardians are invited to the Welcome to Kindergarten event from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Friday, May 11th, a Lipsync Talent Show will be held in the gym at 11:40 am. Students will perform musical presentations for students, staff and guests.
Redwood Acres Public School
On Monday, May 7th, Redwood Acres Public School will kick off Education Week with a “Sing for Someone’s Supper” music concert at 1:30 pm in the gymnasium. Guests are invited to bring in a can of fruit to help the local Good Neighbour’s Food Bank in Hanmer and enjoy a great concert on Music Monday.
On Tuesday, May 8th, the Pinecrest Public School Rock Band will entertain classes at 1:30 pm. New Kindergarten students and their parents/guardians are invited to the Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session from 6 pm to 7 pm. New registrations are welcome. All participants will receive a bag of great resources to support their child at home as they prepare to start school in the fall.
Education Week wraps up with the annual Fun Fair and BBQ on Thursday, May 10th. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to enjoy fun activities, like jazzy jars, the penny table, the dunk tank, clowns, prizes and more.
R.H. Murray Public School
R. H. Murray Public School will host a variety of events for Education Week, beginning with a Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) orientation session on Monday, May 7th. WTK will bring together School Council and community agencies in partnership with the school. New Junior Kindergarten students and their parents/guardians will participate in school readiness activities.
On Tuesday, May 8th, R. H. Murray Public School will host its annual Spaghetti Dinner from 5 pm to 7 pm. Tickets are available in advance or at the door. The hard work of R. H. Murray students will be highlighted throughout the dinner.
On Thursday, May 10th, Grade 8 students will join students at Lively District Secondary School to prepare for their transition to high school.
R. H. Murray will bring Education week to a close with a Mother’s Day Tea. Mothers are invited to join their children. During the tea, they will experience the artwork of students that has served as the inspiration for the event.
S. Geiger Public School
The Grades 5/6 and 7/8 classes at S. Geiger Public School have had the opportunity to work on a Board-wide project to celebrate Music Monday. Students have partnered with community artist Pandora Topp and Arts Education Co-ordinator Ralph McIntosh to create an original work of art that focuses on character education traits and social justice issues, delivered through song and visual arts. The Music Monday celebration will take place at A.B. Ellis Public School on Monday, May 7th at 6:30. Everyone is welcome to see students perform their original works of art.
S. Geiger Public School will host a Math Night for students and their parents/guardians from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm on Thursday, May 10th. Parents and students are invited to come and explore math concepts in game situations with the theme “Walk the Math Plank”. Participants will enjoy a fun, interactive afternoon. Students will have opportunities to win door prizes and free books. Hotdogs and juice will be served at 4:30 pm, followed by games in the gymnasium involving pirates and treasure!
On Tuesday, May 8th, Grade 7 and 8 students will explore possible careers at Trades Day at the Espanola Recreation Complex. Trades Day is being presented by Espanola High School.
Valley View Public School
Education Week will feature Aboriginal Art Workshops at Valley View Public School. An Elder will visit Junior Kindergarten students as well as students in Grades 2, 5 and 6.
A character traits assembly will take place on Tuesday, May 8th. Education Week will also feature a Fitness Fridays kickoff, Gregg LeRock concert, acts of kindness and caring campaign in the Senior Kindergarten classes, and a recycled book exchange. In addition, Grade 1 students will invite parents in for a career day.
Walden Public School
On Monday, May 7th, classes will celebrate Music Monday by performing a variety of songs in the gym. Students will be united in song under the leadership of music teacher, Stacey Foy. Several schools will attend the annual Walden Public School Battle of the Books tournament in the Walden gym on Wednesday, May 9th from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. The choir will perform for the residents of Meadowbrook Retirement Living on Friday, May 11th.
Webbwood Public School
Students and staff from Webbwood Public School will host parents/guardians and other community members for a celebration of the arts on Music Monday. Students have been working very hard preparing songs and plays for the occasion. On Tuesday, May 8th, the Grade 7 and 8 students will travel to Espanola High School for an opportunity to tour the facility, engage in fun activities, and meet the staff and administration. To conclude the week, staff and students will work in their multi-grade house teams and clean up the community.
Westmount Public School
During Education Week, students at Westmount Public School will engage in a variety of educational activities from across the curriculum.
Each classroom will be inviting parents, guardians or special friends to participate in an educational activity using SMART boards. Activities will range from math, to reading, to art.
During Education Week, Westmount Public School will host a Fun Fair as well as the play Cinderella. There will also be a nature walk as well as seed planting to reinforce the importance of eating well and to understand how nature reproduces itself.
SECONDARY
Espanola High School
Espanola High School will host its 6th Annual Trades/Career Day at the Espanola Regional Complex on Tuesday, May 8th from 9 am to 2:30 pm. The event is open to all area feeder schools, the public and all EHS students. Trades Day participants will showcase their careers in an interactive fashion. The event will provide students in Grades 7 to 12 with hands-on career opportunities as they look to the future.
Sudbury Secondary School
Sudbury Secondary School will host its Exposed Art Show on Wednesday, May 9th and Thursday, May 10th. A Pulse Dance Workshop will be presented on Thursday, May 10th and Friday, May 11th. The Vocal and Instrumental Bands will compete in the Nationals in Ottawa on Monday, May 14th and Tuesday, May 15th.
