Rainbow Schools celebrate Music Monday on May 6, 2019

Launched in 2005 by The Coalition for Music Education, Music Monday is the world’s largest single event dedicated to raising awareness for music education. Each year, hundreds of thousands of students, educators, and music makers participate in a simultaneous nationwide concert performance of an original song written by a Canadian artist. “Hymn To Freedom” with music by Oscar Peterson and lyrics by Harriette Hamilton is the 2019 Music Monday anthem.

A.B. Ellis Public School
A.B. Ellis Public School staff and students will celebrate Music Monday on Friday, May 3, 2019. Students and staff will take to the stage to sing, play instruments and entertain their audience of students and parents/guardians. Music Monday coincides with the annual A.B. Ellis Public School Talent Show where staff and students come together to play an instrument and/or sing for a good cause. Non-perishable food items are being collected throughout the week, and again at the show, with donations going to the Helping Hands Food Bank in Espanola.

Adamsdale Public School
The students and staff of Adamsdale Public School will gather in the gym on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 9:30 am to celebrate Music Monday with their annual Talent Show. Students have been practising various performances, including singing, dancing, comedy and instrumental music. The show will end with a presentation of the Music Monday theme song by Oscar Peterson, Hymn to Freedom. Guests are welcome.

Alexander Public School
Alexander Public School will celebrate Music Monday on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. The school band will showcase the pieces they will perform at MusicFest in Ottawa on May 18, 2019. Other classes will sing and play the recorder. Talented students will showcase their skills. This will occur in the afternoon after nutrition break.

Algonquin Road Public School
Throughout the day, Grade 8 Band Students will be on the PA system with Music Monday interludes. A variety of classes will sing or play the recorder. The Band and Choir will visit St. Joseph’s Villa on Friday, May 10, 2019 for a concert. There will be a Spring Concert at the school on Friday, May 17, 2019.

Central Manitoulin Public School
Central Manitoulin Public School hosted a Talent Show on Friday, April 26, 2019 to celebrate Music Monday. The program included a number of performances showcasing alumni stick dancing, scarf dancing, singing, drumming, recorders, band instruments and more.

C.R. Judd Public School
C.R. Judd Public School will host an assembly on Music Monday. The choir will sing their Kiwanis Festival Gold award winning song Lollipop tree and will lead the school in singing the Music Monday theme song Hymn to Freedom by Oscar Peterson.

Ernie Checkeris Public School
Ernie Checkeris Public School will host a concert with Kindergarten to Grades 3. Each class will perform a song on stage. The concert will take place from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm on Monday, May 6, 2019.

Lansdowne Public School
On Music Monday, students will gather in the gym for a group song with special guitar accompaniment.

Lasalle Secondary School, Lockerby Composite School, Sudbury Secondary School, Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School and Confederation Secondary School #bandtogether
Music students from Lasalle Secondary School, Lockerby Composite School, Sudbury Secondary School, Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School and Confederation Secondary School will #bandtogether on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 for a full day of music making. Students will rehearse during the day at Lockerby Composite School to prepare for an evening concert to celebrate Music Monday as well as the accomplishments of secondary school music programs. Each school will have the opportunity to feature the work of their own ensembles. Music students will perform two pieces as a rather large ensemble for the finale of the event. The concert will take place on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 7 pm in the Lockerby Composite School McKellar Auditorium. Admission is by donation with proceeds going to the Joan Mantle Music Trust.

Levack Public School
Levack Public School will continue the tradition of celebrating the power of music again this year with a concert open to the public at 2 pm on Music Monday. The school’s rock band will perform along with the school choir. There will also be classroom performances.

Lively District Secondary School
Lively District Secondary School will host two Spring Music Concerts on Thursday, May 16, 2019. The first will take place from 11 am to 12:30 pm for Lively, R.H. Murray and Walden students. This concert will feature the LDSS Concert Bands and the three LDSS Rock Bands (Grade 7/8, Grade 9/10 and Grade 11/12 Rock Bands) along with performers from R.H. Murray and Walden Public Schools. The second concert will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2019 from 7 pm to 8:30 pm for family, friends and the community. All are welcome.

Manitoulin Secondary School
Leading up to Music Monday, Manitoulin Secondary School will host a concert in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 7 pm. Talented students from elementary schools will also be featured.

Princess Anne Public School
Princess Anne Public School will welcome classical guitarist and composer Jason Daoust to the school on Music Monday. He will spend the day with students from Kindergarten to Grade 8, including a performance.

Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Queen Elizabeth II Public School will host a Lip Sync/Talent Show on Monday, May 6, 2019 from 11:45 am to 1:15 pm. Performers will represent Grades 1 to 6. Doors open at 11:30 am and all are welcome.

R.H. Murray Public School
R.H. Murray Public School will host a Music Monday concert at 1:45 pm on Monday, May 6, 2019. Choirs and ensembles will perform their Kiwanis repertoire and various student groups will showcase classroom music activities. Members of the community are welcome to attend.

R.L. Beattie Public School
R.L. Beattie Public School will celebrate Music Monday with an assembly on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 12 pm. Guests and students will have the opportunity to hear The Band of Barons perform Centurion, The Mickey Mouse March and Let’s Rock. The primary and junior choirs, The Minitones and The Barontones, will sing the song When I Believe. There will be selections performed by Grades 1 to 4 classes which will include popular songs such as Quelle joie!, 7 Years, A Million Dreams, Heart and Soul and Rocky Mountain. There will also be various duets, trios and small ensemble presentations. Grade 2 students Sophia Gould will play Ghiribizzi by N. Paganini on guitar. Grade 5 students Cathy Qin and Angelina Wang will perform Gavotte by J.B. Lully on violin and Maggie Fu and Lillian Li will perform a beautiful piano duet of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. A drumming quartet will also perform a composition entitled Musical Beats and a ukulele/singing group will present the song Riptide. Grade 6 students Austin Conroy, Maija Nener and Monique Fitzmaurice will entertain everyone with a canon version of Frère Jacques. In celebration of Education Week and the school’s first Arcade Day on Friday, May 10, 2019, the audience will also be treated to a fun dance featuring the Super Mario Overworld Theme song coded on a MicroBit. The assembly will conclude with the singing of Hymn to Freedom by Oscar Peterson.

R.L. Beattie Public School and Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School
Community members are invited to attend an evening concert at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 6:30 pm. Admission is by donation.

Sudbury Secondary School
Sudbury Secondary School’s Northern Lights Choir will perform at the Living with Lakes Centre on Friday, May 3, 2019. This lunchtime concert will be the school’s musical “pick-up” to Music Monday and Education Week. The concert will take place from 12:10 pm to 12:50 pm. The public is invited to bring a lunch and come and enjoy student-arranged songs by Fleetwood Mac, Mother Mother, Lisa Leblanc and more. The concert is free.

Valley View Public School
Valley View Public School will present Shine On: Our Music Celebration on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 during the day and at 6 pm. The concert will run about one hour and forty minutes. More than 100 singers will take part as well as over a dozen student musicians. The concert will support the Joan Mantle Music Trust.

Walden Public School
Walden Public School will host a school-wide concert to celebrate Music Monday. Classes have been paired up, with older classes providing accompaniment on orff instruments while younger classes sing. The chime group, ukulele club and school choir will also perform selections. Families are welcome to come and watch their children perform during the middle block.
