Rainbow Schools Go Blue for World Water Day on March 22nd

Rainbow District School Board is inviting students and staff to Go Blue for World Water Day on Friday, March 22, 2019, which coincides with Canada Water Week from March 18 to 24, 2019. This year’s theme is “Water for All – Leaving No One Behind.”

The Go Blue initiative involves three components: to only drink water for the day, to research the importance of protecting our water supply, and to find ways to conserve water at home.

Students will take part in a variety of activities designed to explore their personal water consumption habits. Students will also learn about the connection between water consumption and critical issues such as global warming, the rarity of fresh water, and inequities with fresh water and social justice.

This Go Green initiative is part of the Environmental Committee’s ongoing efforts to encourage sustainable practices and increase awareness about water use.

“Water is the single most important resource needed for humans, plants and animals to survive,” says Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “We use it for many of our daily activities, often without thinking about the ecological impact of our consumption habits.”

Environmental benefits of water conservation include saving money and energy to pump, heat and treat water, protecting water resources, minimizing water pollution, and maintaining the health of aquatic environments.

Rainbow District School Board’s Environmental Committee is issuing monthly challenges to staff and students throughout the school year.

In February, staff and students turned down the heat for Sweater Day.
