Rainbow Schools honour water for International Day of Biological Diversity

On Wednesday, May 22, 2019, Rainbow District School Board invites students and staff to honour our waterways in celebration of International Day for Biological Diversity.

This Go Green challenge is part of the Environmental Committee’s ongoing efforts to build sustainable practices into everyday living.

The International Day for Biological Diversity recognizes the importance of biological diversity on food and health. The day emphasizes environmental goals – climate change mitigation and adaptation, ecosystems restoration, clean water and zero hunger, among others.

For the challenge, students and staff can honour waterways by respecting and protecting water, learning about risks being faced by ecosystems, adopting a local body of water to maintain, reading The Water Walker by author Joanne Robertson, and/or taking a Water Walk with an Anishinaabe Elder.

“Lakes and waterways have shaped and influenced our history, economy, natural environment, and generations, both past and present,” says Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples of Canada have held water as sacred, a gift to be cherished and revered.”

He adds: “Water Walks are an invitation to pause and reflect on what we can do individually and collectively to ensure we have healthy water for generations to come.”

Rainbow District School Board’s Environmental Committee issues monthly challenges to staff and students throughout the school year.

What will next month’s challenge be?
