Rainbow Schools host community concert in support of Joan Mantle Music Trust

Talented music students from four Rainbow Schools will join together for a special Community Concert in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust. The concert will take place on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 6:30 pm in Lasalle Secondary School’s cafeteria.

“Music with a Slice” will feature a variety of seasonal and non-seasonal performances from students at Lasalle Secondary School under the direction of Meghan Saaremets, Carl A. Nesbitt Public School under the direction of Catherine Valiaho, Churchill Public School under the direction of Andrew Scinto, and Northeastern Elementary School under the direction of David Young.

To prepare for the evening, the Lasalle Secondary School Concert Band will welcome Grade 8 students from all three elementary schools for daytime workshops and rehearsals, followed by a pizza dinner.

Admission is by donation. Suggested donation is $5 per person, with a family maximum donation of $25. Guests can also participate in a 50/50 draw. All proceeds will support the Joan Mantle Music Trust.

The schools participating in the concert will receive funds for new instruments from the Joan Mantle Music Trust in the 2019-2020 school year. Lasalle Secondary School, like all Rainbow secondary schools, has received three rounds of funding to date.

“This concert is our way of giving back to members of the local community who have supported the Joan Mantle Music Trust,” says Maureen McNamara, Principal of Lasalle Secondary School. “Everyone is welcome to join us for top-notch entertainment.”

Lasalle Secondary School is located at 1545 Kennedy Street in Sudbury.

THE JOAN MANTLE MUSIC TRUST

The Joan Mantle Music Trust was established in the fall of 2008 to help refresh, modernize and revitalize school music programs in the Rainbow District School Board. The Trust allocates funding for musical instruments and equipment to schools on a rotating basis. The Trust also accepts donations of new and used musical instruments. This ensures that there is an ongoing improvement in the condition of musical equipment throughout the Board, allowing for students to achieve more in their musical studies together.

Joan Mantle dedicated many years to music education in Rainbow Schools. She passed away on June 9, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.

The Rainbow District School Board provides students with opportunities to increase their musical literacy and develop their creative and critical thinking skills by engaging them in activities that lead them to learn in, about and through music. Musical literacy is the ability to read, write, create and perform music, as well as analyze, interpret and appreciate music from a variety of cultures and historical periods.

Learning in, about and through music is part of a well-rounded education that reinforces academic skills and nurtures life skills. Participating in musical activities also improve self-esteem and confidence and promotes teamwork and an overall appreciation of the arts.
