Rainbow Schools host Spring Community Clean Up Day on May 27th

Rainbow District School Board invites students and staff to clean up their schoolyard and neighbourhood communities on Friday, May 27, 2016.
 
“In Rainbow Schools, we are fostering a culture of conservation, encouraging eco-friendly practices and developing global citizens who care about they world in which they live,” says Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “Our Spring Community Clean Up will give students and staff the opportunity to reduce waste and enjoy the great outdoors.”

He adds: “We are proud of our efforts and will continue to make sustainability a priority for now and for the future.”

The Environmental Committee has been issuing challenges to staff and students in Rainbow Schools since the start of the school year.

In September, members of the school staff were invited to bike, take transit, car pool or walk to work on World Car Free Day.

Rainbow Schools held an Eat Local Day in November. Secondary school cafeterias, which are operated by Chartwells, featured a special menu made of locally sourced ingredients.

In January, schools were invited to reduce waste and pack a litterless lunch.

Schools hosted Sweater Day in February and turned down the heat to save energy.

Staff and students brought reusable water containers to school for Water-Bottle Free Day March 24, a creative approach to encouraging the use of water filling stations.

Rainbow Schools took part in Lights Our Canada and turned off all non-essential lighting for Earth Day on April 22.
