Rainbow Schools mark Remembrance Day 2012

Adamsdale Public School

Students and staff at Adamsdale Public School will gather in the gym on Friday, November 9, 2012 at 10:40 am to honour Canadians who sacrificed their lives during war and peacekeeping missions. There will be reading of poetry and singing. A moment of silence will also be recognized.  Soldiers from the Irish Regiment visited several classrooms on Tuesday, November 6th.

Algonquin Road Public School

Algonquin Road Public School will recognize Veterans’ Week with a series of announcements being made by students that highlight Canada’s involvement in the two World Wars and in peacekeeping missions.  As well, on Friday, November 9th, at 10:30 am, staff, students and family members will honour those who have given their lives and continue to put their lives at risk in the cause of peace.

Assiginack Public School

Assiginack Public School will hold its Remembrance Day service in the school gymnasium at 10:45 am on Friday, November 9th. Everyone is welcome.

Carl A. Nesbitt Public School

On Friday, November 9th, at 12 pm, students will gather for an assembly in the gym.  Intermediate students will showcase videos they created and Grade 8 students will perform “The Last Post”.  During the assembly, there will also be the laying of the wreaths and a special viewing of “Prendre un moment”.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Central Manitoulin Public School

Parents/guardians and community members are invited to a Remembrance Day service on Friday, November 9th, at 9:30 am in the school gym.  Following the honour guard and singing of O Canada, students from various grades will honour war heroes through songs, readings and poems.

Charles C. McLean Public School

Charles C. McLean Public School will host a Remembrance Day assembly on Friday, November 9th, at 11:30 am.  The students will share poems and artwork for the Legion Poster Contest at the assembly.  Students and staff are encouraged to wear red on Friday.

Chelmsford Public School

On Wednesday, November 7th, Grade 5 and 6 students will participate in a web chat with Canadian soldiers from the Royal 22e Régiment also known as the Van Doos in Afghanistan.  Students are thrilled to learn first-hand from these brave soldiers.

Staff and students invite parents and family members to observe Remembrance Day on Friday, November 9th, at 10 am in the gym.  The school is honoured to have military veterans in attendance. Students will perform songs and poems to pay tribute to the men and women in the military, both past and present. Visual presentations will bring to life the important peacekeeping work military personnel perform daily around the world.

C.R. Judd Public School

On November 9th, C.R. Judd Public School will host a Remembrance Day service.  Students from JK to Grade 8 will contribute to the ceremony with various readings, including "Armistice Day", and a variety of songs, including "In Flanders Fields" and "Farewell to Nova Scotia".  Students and community members will continue the long-standing traditions of laying wreaths and observing a minute of silence.

Copper Cliff Public School

On Friday, November 9th at 10:40 am, Copper Cliff Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony for students, staff and families.  The ceremony will include the singing of O Canada and "Highway of Heroes". There will also be student readings and a performance of "Peace Like a River" by a primary student. At 11 am, students will observe a minute of silence. Students will also lay wreaths in honour of Canadian soldiers, past and present.

Cyril Varney Public School

A Remembrance Day ceremony will be held for students in the gym at 11:30 am on Friday, November 9th. The ceremony will begin with the singing of O Canada, followed by readings from students and songs by primary and junior students. In addition, various student representatives will lay wreaths in honour of those who have given their lives representing our country.  Parents and family members are welcome.

Gatchell School

On Friday, November 9th, Gatchell School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony at 1 pm.  Each class will contribute to the ceremony by singing a song, reading a story or composing a poem.  Students, staff and guests will observe a minute of silence to remember the sacrifices of veterans and soldiers. SHILO students will participate in Remembrance Day services at the Sudbury Arena.

Lansdowne Public School

On Monday, November 12th, students, staff and parents will gather in the gymnasium at Lansdowne Public School at 10 am to celebrate Remembrance Day. Local veterans and members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 76, will lead the service.  Students will present poems and sing songs.

Larchwood Public School

Students from JK to Grade 8 will participate in a Remembrance Day ceremony in the school gym at 9 am on Friday, November 9th.  Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 503 will lead the school in the singing of O Canada.  Two minutes of silence will be observed followed by the laying of the wreaths and poem readings by students. Together, the school will sing "In Flanders Fields".

Levack Public School

Levack Public School has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of veterans and honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Students participated in the Royal Canadian Legion poem, poster and essay competitions.  Their work will be displayed at Legion Branch 503 on November 11th.

On November 9th, at 9 am, the school will host a Remembrance Day commemorative ceremony in the gym. Levack alumni and current President of Legion Branch 503, Kenny Rogerson, will lead the audience in the ‘Act of Remembrance’. The school will also welcome Harry Warren, a World War II veteran and future recipient of the Order of Canada. The Legion Sergeant-of-Arms will train three Grade 7 students to be the Colour Party and carry the flags for the Legion ceremony. Other students will read poems and lay wreaths. Local artist Kevin Closs will perform.

MacLeod Public School

During Veterans’ Week, MacLeod Public School students and staff will explore poetry, songs, art and websites to create and write a variety of pieces that demonstrate their reflections about peace. The MacLeod school community will participate with songs, music, videos and time for silent reflection. Ceremonies will take place on Friday, November 9th, beginning at 11:20 am at the MacLeod-Wembley site and 11:15 am at the MacLeod Annex.

Markstay Public School

Markstay Public School students, staff and community will participate in an in-school Remembrance Day ceremony at 10:15 am on Friday, November 9th. All parents/guardians and community members are welcome.

Monetville Public School

Monetville Public School has gratefully accepted the French River Legion’s invitation to Remembrance Day ceremonies and activities in Alban on Friday, November 9th, beginning at 10:30 am at the Alban Community Centre. The ceremony will include area children as they continue to build their understanding of the importance of honouring those who served in the wars. Monetville students have also entered the Legion’s poster, prose and poetry contest. Upon the completion of the ceremony, Monetville staff and students will attend a luncheon provided by the Legion.

M.W. Moore Public and Secondary School

On Friday, November 9th, M.W. Moore Public and Secondary School in Shining Tree will commemorate Remembrance Day with an assembly at 10:45 am.  After the singing of O Canada, a commemoration ceremony will include the sharing of poems and personal stories.  Students will then proceed outside for the laying of the wreath and a minute of silence. The community is welcome.

Northeastern Elementary School

Northeastern Elementary School staff and students will attend a Remembrance Day ceremony in the school gym on November 9th, at 10:45 am. Students in various grades from both the French Immersion and English programs will read poems, sing songs and lay wreaths in honour of Canadian soldiers.  A moment of silence will be observed at 11 am with the playing of “The Last Post” and “Reveille”.

Pinecrest Public School

On Tuesday, November 6th, the Chelmsford Legion visited students and staff at Pinecrest to participate in the school’s Remembrance Day ceremony.

Princess Anne Public School

At 10 am on Friday, November 9th, students will gather for a Remembrance Day ceremony, which will include class presentations of poems and readings on the significance of Remembrance Day. Representatives from each class will lay wreaths in honour of war heroes.

Redwood Acres Public School

Redwood Acres Public School will hold a Remembrance Day service on Friday, November 9th, at 10:45 am led by the Grade 4 classes. Students will express their respect through the laying of wreaths, slide presentations, poetry, drama and music.  Families and community members are welcome to attend.  In addition, the Grade 2 classes are writing postcards to soldiers, learning about animals in war and growing poppies from seed.

R.H. Murray Public School

On Friday, November 9th, at 10:30 am students, staff and community members from R. H. Murray Public School will assemble in the gym for their traditional Remembrance Day ceremony.  Each class will have a role in expressing their respect.  Classes will read poetry, sing songs, share stories and watch presentations to honour the day and develop an understanding of its significance.

R.L. Beattie Public School

On Friday, November 9th, students and staff from R.L. Beattie Public School will be involved in a ceremony entitled Bringing Peace to the World, One Child at a Time.  Students from all divisions will bring their perspective to war and peace.  Intermediate students will present a summary of various wars and perform a shadow dance to the song "Mon pays bleu".  Posters for the Peace Contest will be presented in a video format to the song "Tout commence par un rêve".  Students will also interpret “Imagine” and “Dust In the Wind”.  In the Junior division, students will present a poem written as a class.  Primary students will offer their rendition of the poem “Quelques part en Flandres”.  Early Learning Kindergarten students will present a poem called "Un ami" to illustrate that peace begins with children. The ceremony will end with class representatives displaying poppies, doves and candles.

S. Geiger Public School

On Thursday, November 8th at 11:25 am students, staff and members from the Massey Legion will assemble in the gymnasium for a Remembrance Day ceremony.  Students will share poetry readings, sing songs and watch a video to reflect on the sacrifices that others have made for our freedom.

Walden Public School

Walden Public School’s Remembrance Day ceremony will take place in the gym on Friday, November 9th, at 10:20 am.  Following the singing of O Canada, there will be two song performances – "Un canadien errant" and "21 Guns", followed by the poems "In Flanders Fields" and "Le coquelicot".  Each division will lay a wreath at the front of the gym and observe a minute of silence during the playing of “The Last Post”.

Webbwood Public School

Students and staff, along with members of the community from the local Legion, will gather in the gym on Friday, November 9th, at 1 pm to honour all of the Canadians who sacrificed their lives during war and peacekeeping missions.  Prior to the service, a number of students who serve as Sea Cadets will join the local Legion members at the Webbwood Cenotaph.  During the service, students will read poetry, sing, share works of art, and lay a wreath with the visiting veterans.  A moment of silence will follow.

Westmount Avenue Public School

On Friday, November 9th, students and staff will gather in the Tessa Bonhomme Gymnasium to commemorate the veterans and civilians from World War I and II and pay tribute to Canadian soliders who are promoting peace around the world.  The ceremony will begin with the national anthem. Students will then share poems and stories and talk about the importance of the poppy. Students will observe two minutes of silence. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend.  The school will accept donations for the Sudbury Legion.

Chelmsford Valley District Composite School

Chelmsford Valley District Composite School will hold a Remembrance Day ceremony on Wednesday, November 7th at 10 am.  Members of the Chelmsford Legion will participate in the ceremony along with Grade 7 to 12 students and staff. The public is welcome to attend.

Confederation Secondary School

The Royal Legion, Chelmsford Branch, participated in the Remembrance Day ceremonies at Confederation Secondary School on Friday, November 2nd at 10 am.

Lasalle Secondary School

On Friday, November 9th, students and staff at Lasalle Secondary School will observe a moment of silence and will also honour those who have sacrificed their lives, both past and present, through a series of announcements.

Lively District Secondary School

Lively District Secondary School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony at 10:30 am on Friday, November 9th. It will include music, poetry and the laying of wreaths.  The ceremony will culminate at 11 am with a moment of silence.  All students from Grades 7 to 12 have been invited. Members of the community are also welcome.

Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School

On Friday, November 9th, students and staff at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School will hold their annual Remembrance Day assembly from 9 am to 10 am in the gymnasium.  The assembly will include remarks from a local individual who has served on peacekeeping missions. There will be a cenotaph guard, a piper and colour party provided by the 200 Wolf Squadron. Lo-Ellen Park expects to have 10 to 20 cadets in uniform involved in the program. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion will also attend.

Manitoulin Secondary School

On Friday, November 9th at 10:20 am, Manitoulin Secondary School will hold its annual Remembrance Day assembly for the entire student body. The assembly will include a tribute to all veterans, past and present, with a focus on those from Manitoulin Island.  The names of all Manitoulin Island soldiers who have given their lives for our freedom will be read.  The Royal Canadian Legion will participate with the laying of a wreath. The school band will play a few songs including a special performance of “The Last Post” and “Reveille” and the vocal group will sing a musical version of “In Flanders Fields”. In addition to the annual assembly, dozens of students attended a Warriors’ Peace Pole dedication held at the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation on October 30, 2012. Many others will have the opportunity to visit a Remembrance Day Exhibition at the Old Mill Heritage Centre in Kagawong on Friday, November 9th from 1:30 – 2:30 pm, an annual event for MSS students.

Sudbury Secondary School

Sudbury Secondary School, in conjunction with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76, will hold a Remembrance Day ceremony in the Sheridan Auditorium on Friday, November 9th, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am.  The entire school and several members of the local Legion will be in attendance.  Presentations will be made by the immediate past president of Branch 76 and zone Sergeant at Arms, Ron Robitaille, as well as students of Sudbury Secondary School.  Included in the ceremony will be the dedication of two plaques honouring those from Sudbury Secondary School who fought for us.  These plaques were donated previously to predecessor schools.  Students and staff look forward to remembering those who have given so much to ensure our freedom.
