Rainbow Schools mark Remembrance Day 2016

A.B. Ellis Public School
A.B. Ellis Public School took part in a Remembrance Day ceremony at Espanola High School on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 1:30 pm in the school’s main gym. The ceremony included a solemn presentation to remember all members of the Canadian Military. Students created a field of poppies in the gym. Students from both schools read the names of fallen comrades. Staff and students welcomed special guests including legionnaires, cadets, the Espanola Police Service, the Espanola Fire Department, Emergency Paramedic Services, as well as the Byers and Arnold families. The public was welcome to attend.

Alexander Public School
Students in Grades 4, 6 and 8 will attend the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Sudbury Arena on Friday, November 11, 2016. All other students will gather in the school gym to honour those who fought and sacrificed their lives during war and peacekeeping missions. Students will read poetry, watch a short film, and stand for a moment of silence at the eleventh hour. Parents and family members are welcome to attend.

Assiginack Public School
Assiginack Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 9:45 am in the school gym. Students, staff and guests will reflect on the lives that were lost and/or forever changed due to conflict. The ceremony will include poems, readings and a sharing of pictures/letters from soldiers who have a connection to the Assiginack community. Parents/guardians and community members are welcome to attend.

C.R. Judd Public School
C.R. Judd Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 1:45 pm. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 will perform various songs and readings. Members of the community are invited to lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence. Students in Grades 6 to 8 will attend a ceremony at the Capreol Cenotaph hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #179.

Carl A. Nesbitt Public School
The community is invited to join staff and students of Carl A. Nesbitt Public School for a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 10:40 am in the gym. There will be readings, student video tributes, the laying of wreaths and a moment of silence to honour the men and women who have served our country. Grade 7 students will attend the service at the Sudbury Arena.

Central Manitoulin Public School
Students from Central Manitoulin Public School will participate in the Royal Canadian Legion Poems, Posters and Essays competition. On Thursday, November 10, 2016, two classes will visit the War Memorial exhibit at the Kagawong Museum. The school will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 9:15 am. Three classes from the school will also attend and sing songs at a community service.

Charles C. McLean Public School
On Friday, November 11, 2016 at 10:15 am, students and staff at Charles C. McLean Public School will gather in the gym for a Remembrance Day assembly. Students will sing songs, read poetry and lay wreaths. Parents/guardians are invited to attend. Grade 4/5 students will participate in the Remembrance Day program at the Royal Canadian Legion Western Manitoulin Branch #514. Students will march with Legion members to the Cenotaph on Meredith Street and will lead the assembly in singing “O Canada”. Students will recite poems, sing songs, and will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of all students.

Chelmsford Public School
On Friday, November 11, 2016, Grade 4, 5 and 6 students will participate in the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Sudbury Arena. Staff and students invite families to participate in a ceremony in the school gym at 10 am. Students will sing songs and recite poems to pay tribute to the men and women in the military, both past and present. Visual presentations will bring to life the importance of Remembrance Day.

Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
Chelmsford Valley District Composite School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 10 am in the school gym. Students, staff and members of the Chelmsford Legion will be in attendance.

Churchill Public School
Students and staff from Churchill Public School will attend the community ceremony at the Sudbury Arena on Friday, November 11, 2016. This is an important teaching/learning opportunity for students, where Canada is showcased for its role in international conflicts.

Copper Cliff Public School
Copper Cliff Public School will join the Royal Canadian Legion Dr. Fred Starr Branch 76 to host a Remembrance Day ceremony for students, staff and the local community on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 10:45 am. The Junior/Intermediate choir will sing “Our Song of Peace” and “In Flanders Field”. Students will lay wreaths, read poetry and watch a video tribute to pay respect to the soldiers who fought and continue to fight for our freedom.

Cyril Varney Public School
Students at Cyril Varney Public School will prepare and present a special ceremony for Remembrance Day. The ceremony will open with the “Welcome Song” in Ojibwe. Students will recount stories of decorated war heroes Oscar Gravelle, a great uncle of a student, and the newly decorated First Nations World War 1 Hero Charles Henry Byce who was honored on September 17 2016 in Chapleau. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 am. The community is welcome to attend.

The community is invited to join staff and students of Ernie Checkeris Public School in the gymnasium at 10:40 am for a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2016. Students will sing a song of remembrance, lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence. Students in Grade 3 will attend the ceremony at the Sudbury Arena.

Lansdowne Public School
Lansdowne Public School will host a Remembrance Day service on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 10 am for primary students. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend. Students in Grades 4 to 8 will attend the Remembrance Day service at the Sudbury Arena.

Larchwood Public School
Larchwood Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 9 am in the school gym. Staff and students will welcome special guests including members of the Royal Canadian Legion. Guests will observe a moment of silence followed by poem readings and the laying of wreaths. Students in Grades 1 to 8 will attend a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Onaping Falls Royal Canadian Legion Branch #503 at 10:30 am.

Lasalle Secondary School
Lasalle Secondary School will host a Remembrance Day service for all students and staff on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 11 am. Students will reflect on the symbolism of the poppy and will recite the poems “In Flanders Fields” and “Dulce et Decorum Est.” Music teacher Peter Scherzinger will play “The Last Post” and “Reveille” on the bugle.

Levack Public School
On Friday, November 11, 2016 at 9 am, Levack Public School will host a Remembrance Day commemorative ceremony in the gym to honour those who have and continue to fight for our freedom. Parents/guardians and community members are welcome. Comrade Jeff Dane will lead the ceremony. A Grade 7 student will read John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields” and will explain the importance of remembrance. Three Grade 5/6 students will carry the flags for the Colour Party including the opening and closing of the ceremony. Students in Grades 7 and 8 will share Remembrance Day poems. The school’s Choir and Band will perform songs. Students will participate in the Royal Canadian Legion Poems, Posters and Essays competition. The work will be displayed at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #503 on Friday, November 11, 2016 for the community ceremony. Junior and Intermediate students will walk to the Cenotaph in Levack for a ceremony at 11 am.

Little Current Public School
Little Current Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2015 at 10 am in the school gym. Veterans from the local Sea Cadet corps and the Little Current Legion Branch #177 will be in attendance. Students will perform a song, recite poems and present a memorial wreath on behalf of the school. Parents/guardians and community members are welcome. Several students will participate in the local ceremony at the cenotaph in downtown Little Current. Students will visit a Remembrance Day exhibition at the Old Mill Heritage Centre in Kagawong on Wednesday November 9, 2016.

Lively District Secondary School
Lively District Secondary School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony at 10:20 am on Friday, November 11, 2016. The service will include a performance by the Young Thunderbird Singers who will perform an honour song. There will also be readings, poetry and the laying of wreaths, followed by a moment of silence at the eleventh hour. All students from Grades 7 to 12 will attend. Members of the community are also welcome.

Lockerby Composite School
Some 100 students from Lockerby Composite School will attend the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Sudbury Arena on Friday, November 11, 2016. All students will participate in an observance from 11 am to 11:10 am.

Manitoulin Secondary School
On Friday, November 11, 2016, Manitoulin Secondary School will host its annual Remembrance Day assembly. The ceremony will include a tribute to all veterans, past and present, with a focus on those from Manitoulin Island. The names of all Manitoulin Island soldiers who have given their lives for our freedom will be read. The local Royal Canadian Legion will participate with the laying of a wreath. The Manitoulin Secondary School band will play songs, including a special performance of “The Last Post” and “Reveille”. Students will visit a Remembrance Day exhibition at the Old Mill Heritage Centre in Kagawong.

Markstay Public School
Staff, students and members of the community will join together for a Remembrance Day service at the Markstay Cenotaph on Pioneer Street on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 1 pm.

Monetville Public School
Students from Monetville Public School will attend a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Noelville Arena on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 10:30 am. Students will participate in the service by reciting “In Flanders Field”. Following the service, students will attend a community luncheon hosted by the local Royal Canadian Legion.

Northeastern Elementary School
On Friday, November 11th, 2016, Northeastern Elementary School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony at 9:50 am in the school gym. The ceremony will include presentations from students in French and English. Students will lead the service as they demonstrate their understanding of war and sacrifice. With the support of their teachers, the students have created poems, songs and artwork to recognize the efforts made by our soldiers and to say thanks.

Pinecrest Public School
Pinecrest Public School will participate in the Remembrance Day ceremony in Capreol on Friday, November 11th at 10:30 am in support of the local Legion and Veterens. The parade will begin at the Legion and will end at the Cenotaph. The Pinecrest Concert Band will play “O Canada” and the school’s music teacher will play the “Last Post”.

Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Queen Elizabeth II Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2016 in the gym. The ceremony will include the singing of “O Canada”, a reading of “In Flanders Fields” and the laying of wreaths. Students and staff will watch “Highway of Heroes” and “A Pittance of Time”. The ceremony will conclude with a trumpet performance of “The Last Post”. Students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 will attend the community service at the Sudbury Arena beginning at 10:30 am.

Redwood Acres Public School
Students in Kindergarten and Grade 4 at Redwood Acres Public School will lead a Remembrance Day service on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 10:45 am. Students will express their respect through the laying of wreaths, slide presentations, poetry, drama and music. Families and community members are welcome to attend.

R.H. Murray Public School
R.H. Murray Public School will attend the Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2016 at the Sudbury Arena. Leading up to Remembrance Day, students will review poems and songs inspired by war. Students will reflect on the sacrifices made by many Canadians during war and peacekeeping missions.

R.L. Beattie Public School
For Remembrance Day, Kindergarten to Grade 2 students will perform special presentations to each of their classes. Students in Grades 3 to 6 will attend the community ceremony at the Sudbury Arena.

S. Geiger Public School
S. Geiger Public School students will participate in the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poems, Posters and Essays competition. Members of the Legion will visit the school for a Remembrance Day service on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 11:30 am. Winners of the competition will also be announced. On Friday, November 11, 2016, staff and students will participate in a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Massey Arena. The school choir will perform.

Valley View Public School
On Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 1:45 pm, Valley View Public School will host a Remembrance Day service for students in Grades 1 to 5. Veterans and members of the local Royal Canadian Legion will be present to speak with students about the significance of the service and their medals. Students will lay wreaths in honour of Canadian soldiers, past and present, and guests will observe a minute of silence. Grades 6, 7 to 8 students will attend the Remembrance Day service at the Sudbury Arena on Friday, November 11, 2016.

Walden Public School
A Remembrance Day ceremony will take place in the school gym at Walden Public School on Friday, November 11th, 2016 at 10 am. Following the singing of “O Canada”, the choir will perform “Prayer for the Children”. Several classes will lay wreaths and sing songs or recite poetry in both official languages. The gym will be decorated with student artwork. Some Grade 6 students will attend the service at the Sudbury Arena.

Webbwood Public School
Webbwood Public School students will participate in the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poems, Posters and Essays contest. Members of the Legion will visit the school on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 1:30 pm for a special ceremony. Students will recite songs and a choral reading of “In Flanders Fields.” Winners of the competition will be announced. Students will also attend a community ceremony at the Webbwood Cenotaph.

Westmount Avenue Public School
On Friday, November 11, 2016, Kindergarten to Grade 1 students will lay wreaths and recite poems during a school ceremony. Grade 2 students will attend the community ceremony at the Sudbury Arena.
