Rainbow Schools mark Remembrance Day 2017

These are the members of our community who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Students in Rainbow Schools are marking Remembrance Day this week.

Adamsdale Public School
Adamsdale Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 10th at 10:30 am to commemorate those who have served Canada in war and peacekeeping missions. Students, staff and guests will engage in poetry, songs and readings. Students from the Ojibwe language class will sing the national anthem. The theme for this year is to recognize the contribution of Indigenous peoples to the war and peace efforts. A moment of silence will be held at the eleventh hour.

Alexander Public School
Students in Kindergarten as well as Grades 4, 6 and 8 will gather in the school gym on Friday, November 10th to honour those who fought and sacrificed their lives during war and peacekeeping missions. Students will read poetry, watch a short film, and stand for a moment of silence at the eleventh hour. Parents/guardians and family members are welcome to attend.

Algonquin Road Public School
On Friday, November 10th at 10:30 am, Algonquin Road Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony in the gym. The school choir will perform, students will read poetry and watch a slide show. Parents/guardians and community members are welcome to attend.

Assiginack Public School
Assiginack Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 10th at 10:30 am in the gym. Students, staff and guests will reflect on the lives that were lost and forever changed due to conflict. The ceremony will include poems, readings and a sharing of pictures/artifacts from soldiers connected to the Assiginack community. Parents/guardians and community members are welcome to attend.

Barrydowne College
Students will attend a Remembrance Day celebration hosted by the Centre for Aboriginal Services, Cambrian College. Students will spend an hour outdoors in the arbor, where an Elder will share stories and pay tribute to those who have passed.

C.R. Judd Public School
C.R. Judd Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 10th at 2 pm. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 will be joined by members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #179. Members of the community are invited to lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence. The ceremony will include poetry readings and songs performed by students to honour the men and women who have fought for peace and protection of our freedom. Students have created artwork, writings and poems to reflect on the meaning of peace, war and remembrance.

Carl A. Nesbitt Public School
Staff and students at Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will commemorate Remembrance Day with a special ceremony on Friday, November 10th at 10:40 am in the gym. Students will share poems, readings of remembrance, and videos they created depicting the social and emotional effects of war on society. The ceremony will conclude with each class laying a wreath followed by a moment of silence.

Central Manitoulin Public School
On Friday, November 10th at 9 am, Central Manitoulin Public School will welcome the entire community for a Remembrance Day service. Grade 3 students will create a banner with poppies, Canadian flags and doves to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Students will also take part in The Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Poster and Literary Contest to honour Canada’s veterans through creative art and writing, and remember.

Charles C. McLean Public School
On Friday, November 10th at 10 am, students and staff at Charles C. McLean Public School will gather in the gym for a Remembrance Day service. Students will sing songs, read poetry and lay wreaths. The public is welcome to attend.

Chelmsford Public School
On Friday, November 10th at 10 am, staff and students will gather for a special ceremony in the gym. Students will sing songs, recite poems and observe a minute of silence while
“The Last Post” is played in tribute to the men and women of the military, both past and present. Wreath bearers from each class will lay student-made wreaths to commemorate the sacrifices made. Parent/guardians are welcome to attend.

Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
Staff and students will gather for a Remembrance Day Ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at 10 am in the gym. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #553 will participate and pay respect to all of the fallen soldiers and war veterans. Lest we forget.

Churchill Public School
Staff and students will participate in a Remembrance Day service on Friday, November 10th at 10:30 am. A variety of classes will read poetry, sing songs, or lay wreaths. The Ojibway Singers will perform the national anthem, and a moment of silence will be observed at the eleventh hour.

Copper Cliff Public School
Copper Cliff Public School will join the Royal Canadian Legion Dr. Fred Starr Branch #76 to host a Remembrance Day ceremony for students, staff and the local community on Friday, November 10th at 10:45 am. The choir will sing “Our Song of Peace” by George Strid and “Shine a Light for Peace” by Craig Cassils. Students will lay wreaths, read poetry, and watch a video tribute to pay respect to the soldiers who have fought and continue to fight for our freedom.

Confederation Secondary School
Students and staff of Confederation Secondary School will attend a community ceremony at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #179 on Friday, November 10th at 10 am.

Cyril Varney Public School
On Friday, November 10th, Cyril Varney Public School will honour the men and women who bravely served their country and lost their lives in war. Classes will enjoy a special presentation to reflect and remember. Two minutes of silence will be observed.

Espanola High School
On Friday, November 10th at 1:30 pm, Espanola High School and A.B Ellis Public School will join together to celebrate Remembrance Day. In attendance will be Algoma-Manitoulin MP Carol Hughes, and Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha, as well as a variety of community organizations including the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #39, Espanola Fire Department, Espanola Police Department, Emergency Medical Services and the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. The ceremony will commemorate the sacrifice of former students and soldiers across the country. The public is welcome to attend.

Lansdowne Public School
On Friday, November 10th at 10 am, staff and students will gather in the gym for a Remembrance Day service. Students will perform traditional components including “The Last Post” and the laying of the wreaths. Families are welcome.

Larchwood Public School
Larchwood Public School will recognize the efforts and sacrifices of generations of Canadians who have fought, and continue to fight for peace and freedom. In collaboration with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #503, staff and students will remember with a special ceremony on Friday, November 10th at 10:45 am in the school gym.

Lasalle Secondary School
Lasalle Secondary School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 10th at 10:30 am. The ceremony will include a dramatic presentation of “In Flanders Field,” a performance from the Guitar Ensemble, a media presentation, a drumming circle and a special reading of “Dulce et Decorum Est.” To conclude, everyone will observe a moment of silence.

Levack Public School
On Friday, November 10th at 9:15 am, Levack Public School will host a Remembrance Day commemorative ceremony in the gym to honour those who have and continue to fight for our freedom. Parents/guardians and community members are welcome. Comrade Jeff Dane, and Royal Canadian Legion Branch #503 President, John Getchell, will lead the ceremony. Students will read John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields” and will explain the importance of remembrance. Three students will carry the flags for the Colour Party. Grade 7 and 8 students will share poems, and the school choir and Levack Rock Band will perform. Students will participate in the Royal Canadian Legion Poems, Posters and Essays competition. Their work will be displayed at the Legion in Onaping Falls.

Little Current Public School
Little Current Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 10th at 10 am in the school gym. Veterans from the local Sea Cadet corps and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #177 will attend. Students will perform songs, recite poems and present a memorial wreath on behalf of the school. Parents/guardians and community members are welcome.

Lively District Secondary School
Lively District Secondary School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony at 10:20 am on Friday, November 10th. The Young Thunderbird Singers will perform an honour song. There will also be special readings, poetry and the laying of wreaths, followed by a moment of silence at the eleventh hour. Members of the community are also welcome.

Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School
The entire school community will participate in a special ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at 9:15 am. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion, local cadets, student council and school bands will attend.

MacLeod Public School
On Friday, November 10th at 10:30 am, MacLeod Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony for students, staff and members of the local community. The school’s Concert Band will perform “O Canada.” Various classes will recite poems, sing songs, share writings, and watch a video tribute of students paying respect to the soldiers who fought and continue to fight.

Markstay Public School
Markstay Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 10th at 10 am in the gym. Grade 3/4 students will read the story “Why We Remember”. Everyone will participate in a coral reading of “In Flanders Fields”. Grade 7/8 students will recite their poem about the meaning of remembering. Students will watch “Highway of Heroes” with the Trews’ Song followed by “The Last Post” and a moment of silence.

Monetville Public School
Students from Monetville Public School will attend a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Noelville Arena on Friday, November 10th at 10:30 am. Students will recite “In Flanders Field” and will sing the national anthem. Following the service, students will attend a community luncheon hosted by the local Royal Canadian Legion.

Northeastern Elementary School
Northeastern will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 10th at 9:30 am in the school gym. There will be songs of peace in English and French. The Indigenous drumming group, Bannock Boyz, will also perform.

Princess Anne Public School
On Thursday, November 9th at 9:30 am, students and staff at Princess Anne will join together for a Remembrance Day ceremony. Veterans and members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service will attend and assist in the laying of wreaths. Students will perform songs, poems and passages that help to educate the community about the significance of this day. The public is welcome to attend.

Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Queen Elizabeth II Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 10th at 10:25 am in the gym. The ceremony will include the singing of “O Canada,” a special reading of “In Flanders Fields,” and the laying of wreaths. Select students will recite the acrostic poem “Coquelitcot,” and will perform the “Honour Song.” Students and staff will watch “Highway of Heroes” and “A Pittance of Time.” The ceremony will conclude with a trumpet performance of “Taps.”

Redwood Acres Public School
On Monday, November 6th, the entire Redwood Acres Public School community celebrated Remembrance Day with veterans from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #44. Each class designed a wreath to lay at the base of a cenotaph constructed in the gym. The school choir sang, and Grade 6 students recited “In Flanders Fields”. Students watched a video made by students entitled “Why Wear a Poppy”.

R.H. Murray Public School
In recognition of National Aboriginal Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 8th, Ojibwe language students will attend a ceremony at Atikameksheng Anishnawbek. During the ceremony, students will recite “In Flanders Fields” in Anishinaabemowin. The school will host a Remembrance Day ceremony in the school gym on Friday, November 10th at 10 am. The focus for the event will be ways in which students can commit to peace. The choir will perform a musical tribute and students will showcase their poetry and artwork. Members of the community are welcome to attend.

R.L. Beattie Public School
For Remembrance Day, Kindergarten to Grade 2 students will perform special presentations to each of their classes. Students in Grades 3 to 6 will attend the community ceremony at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School.

S. Geiger Public School
Students and staff at S. Geiger Public School will join members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #355 on Thursday, November 9th. Students will present literary selections and the choir will sing “Today I’m Gonna Try and Change the World” by Johnny Reid. Students from each class will also present poppies.

Walden Public School
A Remembrance Day ceremony will take place in the school gym on Friday, November 10th at 10 am. Following the singing of “O Canada”, the choir will perform “A Wish For Peace”. Several classes will sing songs or recite poetry in both official languages. Students, staff and community members will lay wreaths. Student artwork will be on display.

Westmount Avenue Public School
On Friday, November 10th at 11 am, students from Wesmount Avenue Public School will gather in the gym to lay wreaths, recite poems and sing songs to honour those who serve in our military past and present.
