Rainbow Schools mark Remembrance Day 2023
Flags will fly at half-mast at Rainbow Schools in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin Island from Wednesday, November 8, 2023 to mark Indigenous Veterans Day, throughout the weekend, to mark Remembrance Day.

Staff and students from A.B. Ellis Public School joined the Espanola High School community for a Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday, November 6th. This important event marked the sacrifice our veterans, past and present, have made to secure our freedom and democracy.
Adamsdale Public School
Adamsdale Public School will commemorate Indigenous Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 8th by honouring Indigenous veterans who have and continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces. A school-wide Remembrance Day ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 9th in the gym. Students will learn about the many contributions of Canadians who served in times of war, military conflict and peace.
Alexander Public School
Staff and students at Alexander Public School will commemorate Remembrance Day with a bilingual ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at 10 am. The ceremony will include school band performances of “Abide with Me” and “O Canada”, poetry readings, the laying of wreaths by classes, and a moment of silence. Students will also take part in meaningful conversations about the significance of the day to honour the courage and devotion of the brave men and women who served their country. Poppy donations will be accepted for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #564. All are welcome to attend.
Algonquin Road Public School
Algonquin Road Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at 10:30 am in the gym. Students will watch a thoughtfully crafted slideshow with photos, memorabilia and personal stories that highlight family connections to this important day – a heartfelt way to honor their loved ones.
Assiginack Public School
Staff and students at Assiginack Public School will commemorate Remembrance Day with a school-wide ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at 9:30 am. The ceremony will include a musical performance, poetry readings, the laying of wreaths, and a video tribute to veterans connected to Assiginack Public School. Members of the community are welcome to attend. The school choir will also sing at a Remembrance Day service on Saturday, November 11th at the Assiginack Cenotaph.
Barrydowne College
Barrydowne College will mark Remembrance Day with a ceremony on Thursday, November 9th. The observance will incorporate contributions from staff and students including a reading of John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields”, “The Unknown Soldier Has Come Home”, and the singing of “O Canada”. At 11 am, two minutes of silence will be observed as a tribute to the brave men and women who have fought and lost their lives in conflict.
C.R. Judd Public School
Students from C.R. Judd Public School will mark Remembrance Day with a student-led ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at 10:15 am. A delegation from the Capreol Royal Canadian Legion Branch #179 will be in attendance. Classes will engage in activities and discussions about Remembrance Day, and the sacrifice our veterans, past and present, have made to secure our freedom and democracy. The ceremony will feature student poems, songs and art. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.
Central Manitoulin Public School
Central Manitoulin Public School will host a Remembrance Day service on Thursday, November 9th at 9:15 am in the gym. The community is welcome to attend. Light snacks will be served in the library at 8:30 am for veterans, members of the Royal Canadian Legion as well as the community. The ceremony will include choir songs, poem readings such as “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae and the laying of wreaths. Following the service, veterans will visit classes to speak with students about remembrance. Students will show their commitment of remembrance by painting poppies on rocks to be placed at the Manitoulin District Cenotaph, writing thank you letters to veterans in attendance, and sending Christmas cards and valentines to service members throughout the year. Students and staff will also wear red in support of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Charles C. McLean Public School
Students from Charles C. McLean Public School will participate in various learning activities in the lead up to a Remembrance Day service on Thursday, November 9th at 9 am in the gym. The ceremony will include speakers from the local Royal Canadian Legion.
Lansdowne Public School
Lansdowne Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at 10 am in the gym. Intermediate students will lead the ceremony. The school choir will perform “O Canada”, “A Wish for Peace” and “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. Classes will recite poems, sing songs and share readings. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.
Larchwood Public School
Larchwood Public School will mark Remembrance Day with a ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at 11:30 am. The ceremony will include school choir performances of “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” and “Sing for Peace”, poetry readings, the laying of wreaths by classes and a moment of silence. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Onaping Falls Branch #503 are welcome. Classes will also take part in meaningful conversations about the importance of remembering and will participate in the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual poster contest. Donations for poppies will be accepted in support of the Legion. Community members are welcome to attend.
Lasalle Secondary School
Lasalle Secondary School will host a school-wide Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, November 9th. An Indigenous student will open the ceremony, followed by an acknowledgment of Canada’s first peoples. “A Pittance of Time” will be played and students in French Immersion will read “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae in English and French. The ceremony will conclude with the playing of “The Last Post” followed by “O Canada” and a moment of silence.
Little Current Public School
Little Current Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at 10 am in the school gym. Distinguished guests will be led by the Colour Party and members of Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps 348 Manitoulin, with Iain McGale on the bagpipes. Each class will display art in the gym in memory of those who served our country. Community members are welcome to attend.
Lively District Secondary School
On Thursday, November 9th, Lively District Secondary School will take part in “Learning to Remember”. Through drama, music, videos and readings, staff and students will commemorate the many sacrifices and experiences of those who have bravely served our nation.
Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School
A school-wide Remembrance Day ceremony will take place at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School on Thursday, November 9th in collaboration with members of the Lockerby Royal Canadian Legion Branch #564. The event will commemorate the many sacrifices of the men and women who fought bravely to serve and protect our country.
Lockerby Composite School
Each year, staff and students of Lockerby Composite School collect artifacts and mementos of someone who served in a 20th century conflict with a connection to the school. All items are on display in the school’s main foyer as a symbol of remembrance. The entire school will mark Remembrance Day with readings, the playing of “The Last Post”, “Reveille” and “O Canada” before 11 am on Thursday, November 9th.
MacLeod Public School
MacLeod Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at 10:30 am in the gym. Families and members of the community are welcome to pay tribute, honour and thank the men and women who served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace.
Markstay Public School
Markstay Public School will host a school-wide Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, November 9th. Students will share songs, readings, poems and art.
Monetville Public School
Monetville Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at 10:30 am. Students will share reflections of remembrance through poems, stories, and songs in cohorts. “The Last Post” will be played, followed by a moment of silence. The Monetville Choir will perform “Blowin’ in the Wind” by Bob Dylan and “Imagine” by John Lennon.
Northeastern Elementary School
On Thursday, November 9th, Northeastern Elementary School will commemorate our fallen soldiers and those who continue to protect our freedom. The gym will be decorated with art from students in Kindergarten to Grade 8. Students and staff will hear songs and poems in English and French followed by a moment of silence and a bugle performance.
Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 at Queen Elizabeth II Public School will take part in a school-wide Remembrance Day assembly in the gym on Thursday, November 9th. This important event will commemorate the sacrifice our veterans, past and present, have made to secure our freedom and democracy.
R.H. Murray Public School
Staff and students at R.H. Murray Public School will commemorate Remembrance Day on Thursday, November 9th with a school-wide ceremony at 11:45 am in the gym. The service will include a musical performance, poetry reading by students, the laying of wreaths and videos. Members of the community are welcome to attend.
Redwood Acres Public School
Redwood Acres Public School will honour the sacrifices of Canadians during a Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, November 9th in the school gym. Students will decorate the gym. The service will be led by two students in Grade 6. Classes will sing “O Canada” and recite “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. Each class will perform a reading. All classes will take part in the laying of wreaths. The ceremony will conclude with a moment of silence at 11 am to commemorate the end of World War I and the many lives lost in war and times of conflict.
Remote Learning Elementary and Secondary
Staff and students at the Remote Learning Elementary and Secondary School will take part in a virtual Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, November 9th. This important event will commemorate the sacrifice of our veterans, past and present, to secure our freedom and democracy.
S. Geiger Public School
Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #432 will join staff and students from S. Geiger Public School on Thursday, November 9th at 10:30 am for a Remembrance Day ceremony. The event will include art, a reading of “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae by Grade 7/8 students and the laying of a wreath.
Sudbury Secondary School
In the lead up to Remembrance Day, students from Sudbury Secondary School will share facts about the school and the world wars during morning announcements. Students in the Canadian History class are preparing a pre-recorded ceremony that will include an introduction about the origin of Remembrance Day, Canada’s involvement in World Wars I and II, “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae, readings, as well as the playing of “The Last Post” and “Reveille”, a moment of silence and “O Canada”.
