Rainbow Schools receive CIM funding for science and technology
Students at five Rainbow Schools will share in a total of $20,145 in funding from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, Sudbury Branch. Funding will benefit students at Algonquin Road Public School, Markstay Public School, Confederation Secondary School, Lively District Secondary School and Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School.
“We thank CIM for supporting our efforts to enhance the hands-on learning opportunities that we offer in science and technology,” said Rainbow District School Board Chair Doreen Dewar. “Students will expand their knowledge in this important area with new tools and resources. Some of the funding will support student participation in robotics competitions.”
The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) facilitates learning and professional development in the Canadian minerals, metals, materials and energy industries.
“We provide funding at the elementary and secondary levels for material, equipment, and special training for mining and metallurgy programs,” said CIM Sudbury Branch Education Committee Past Chair Christine Bertoli. “In addition, CIM provides bursaries to university and college students and funding for community events including the Regional Science Fair, Go Eng Girls, Modern Mining and Technology Sudbury Education Week, the Cambrian College Head Frame Competition, WISE and Laurentian University Mining Games.”
Algonquin Public School received $2,777 to purchase Lego Robotics. A $2,459 donation to Confederation Secondary School will go towards a 3D printer. Markstay Public School received $2,100 for Lego Robotics. A $2,809 contribution to Lively District Secondary School will be used for a 3D printer.
The robotics teams at Lively District Secondary School and Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School also received $5,000 each to support their participation in the FIRST Robotics Competition.
