Rainbow Schools welcome new Principals

Some of the Rainbow District School Board’s elementary schools will welcome new Principals when classes resume on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

Julie Balen is the new Principal of Assiginack Public School. Julie Balen began her career at the Wikwemikong Board of Education where she taught various grades at the secondary level in English and literacy, and garnered a wealth of knowledge in creating blended learning classrooms. Julie Balen joined Rainbow District School Board in 2024 as Vice-Principal of Little Current Public School where she was welcomed by staff, students and families. Principal Balen is thrilled to bring her experience to her home community of Assiginack.

Brenda Carr has been appointed System Principal of French Immersion, Arts Education and the New Teacher Induction Program. Brenda Carr taught in Southern Ontario for eight years before returning to Sudbury, and joined Rainbow Schools in 2006. Her teaching experience extends across all grades in the elementary panel, including Core French and French Immersion programs. Principal Carr was promoted to Vice-Principal in 2015, serving at Northeastern Elementary School, Walden Public School, Ernie Checkeris Public School and Carl A. Nesbitt Public School. She was also the proud Principal of Alexander Public School, and most recently, Valley View Public School. Brenda Carr looks forward to her new role as a system-wide administrator.

Tracey Chapman has been appointed Principal of Little Current Public School. Since joining the Board in 1995, Tracey Chapman has taught various grades from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in both Sudbury and Manitoulin Island. She has been an administrator on Manitoulin Island since 2002, having served as Principal of Central Manitoulin Public School in Mindemoya, Charles C. McLean Public School in Gore Bay and, for the last three years, Assiginack Public School in Manitowaning. She previously taught at Little Current Public School and is looking forward to returning to the school as Principal.

Jennifer Harvey has been appointed Principal of Churchill Public School. Since joining the Board in 1996, Jennifer Harvey has taught a variety of grades in the elementary panel, including many years as a special education resource teacher demonstrating a passion for success for all students. Prior to her appointment as Principal of Lansdowne Public School in 2018, she served as Principal of Jean Hanson Public School and Vice-Principal at a number of schools. Principal Harvey is delighted to join the community of Churchill Public School.

Elizabeth Mack is the new Principal of Copper Cliff Public School. Elizabeth Mack has been an educator with Rainbow District School Board since 1996, having taught a wide range of grades as well as special education. She served as Vice-Principal at a number of elementary schools including MacLeod Public School, and was promoted as Principal of Larchwood Public School in 2017. She was also Principal of Churchill Public School in 2023. Principal Mack is thrilled to work with the entire Copper Cliff Public School community.

Kelly McCauley has been appointed Principal of Walden Public School. Kelly McCauley joined the Board as a classroom teacher in 1997, and shared her extensive knowledge in math with teachers across Rainbow Schools as a consultant. She also has considerable experience working in education in Ottawa and Sudbury. Kelly McCauley was appointed Principal of R.L. Beattie Public School in January 2018. Prior to this, she was Vice-Principal of Walden Public School and Princess Anne Public School. Principal McCauley looks forward to rejoining the community of Walden Public School.

Elisa McNeil is the new Principal of Lansdowne Public School. Elisa McNeil has been an educator with Rainbow District School Board since 2005. Her experience extends across various grades and programs such as music and special education at a number of elementary schools including Copper Cliff Public School, Levack Public School, Princess Anne Public School and Wembley Public School. Following this, she served as Vice-Principal of Princess Anne Public School as well as Lasalle Secondary School. Principal McNeil is excited to lead Lansdowne Public School.

Cheryl Vincent has been appointed Principal of Levack Public School. Cheryl Vincent joined Rainbow District School Board in 2004. She taught at Webbwood Public School and A.B. Ellis Public School, and also spent three years as an elementary consultant. In 2017, she was promoted Vice-Principal of Lansdowne Public School where she remained for five years. Following this, she served as interim Principal of Copper Cliff Public School before returning as Vice-Principal of Lansdowne Public School then MacLeod Public School. Principal Vincent looks forward to working with the staff, students and families of Levack Public School.

Carrie Wilson is the new Principal of Valley View Public School. Carrie Wilson has over 24 years of experience in elementary education with a strong focus on literacy and special education. She began her career teaching in North York in 1996, then moved to Rainbow Schools in 2003. She was promoted Vice-Principal of Chelmsford Public School in 2017, then transferred to Chelmsford Valley District Composite School in 2020 before entering the secondary panel at Sudbury Secondary School in 2021. She also served as Principal of the Summer Learning Program for the past five years. Principal Wilson is thrilled to join the staff, students and families of Valley View Public School.

Stephen Winckel is the new Principal of R.L. Beattie Public School. Principal Winckel joined the Board in 1998, and is a proud graduate of the French Immersion program at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School. Stephen Winckel was appointed Principal of Walden Public School in 2018. He also served as Principal of Levack Public School for six years. Prior to this, he was Principal of Markstay Public School and Vice-Principal of R.L. Beattie Public School and Lansdowne Public School. Stephen Winckel looks forward to rejoining the R.L. Beattie Public School community as Principal.
