What’s happening in Rainbow Schools?

Rainbow secondary schools host Information Nights for Grade 8 students

Grade 8 students and their parents/guardians are invited to Information Nights at Rainbow secondary schools in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin Island.

All students within each secondary school’s boundaries are welcome to participate, regardless of which school they currently attend. Grade 6 students are welcome in secondary schools that offer Grades 7 and 8.

Rainbow District School Board has prepared a guide for students and parents/guardians that explores the changes, choices and challenges students face while entering high school.

The guide contains information about course codes, levels of study, timetables and tips.

The guide can be accessed online here: bit.ly/rsnextstopgrade9

Valley View Public School students Devlin Moreau, left, and Rhea Laberge read the Next Stop: Grade 9 guide for students entering secondary school.

Rainbow District School Board’s secondary schools offer exceptional opportunities, in English and French Immersion, in all program pathways – independent living, work, apprenticeship, college and university.

The Board also has four specialized programs – the Arts Education Program, the Science Technology Education Program (STEP), the Innovative Integrated Technology Program (InIT) and the International Baccalaureate Program (IB). Busing to these programs is offered to students within Greater Sudbury.

Rainbow secondary schools offer Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs in various subjects. These Ministry of Education approved programs allow students to focus their learning on a specific sector while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). SHSMs assist students making their way from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace.

Rainbow District School Board offers Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs in 14 sectors: Agriculture, Arts and Culture, Business, Construction, Energy, Environment, Health and Wellness, Hospitality and Tourism, Information and Communications Technology, Manufacturing, Mining, Non-Profit, Sports and Transportation. Each program includes 8 to 10 courses in a selected field. Students learn on the job and can earn valuable industry certifications.

SHSMs enable students to gain sector specific skills and knowledge in engaging, career-related learning environments, and prepare for graduation and post-secondary education, training or employment.
