What’s happening in Rainbow Schools?

Rainbow secondary schools host virtual Information Nights for Grade 8 students

Grade 8 students and their parents/guardians are invited to log on to rainbowschools.ca to access virtual information nights for Rainbow secondary schools. Sessions will be live or pre-recorded and accessible on school websites. All students are welcome to participate, regardless of which elementary school they currently attend.

Rainbow District School Board has produced a Guide for Students and Parents called “Making the Transition – Finding your way from Grade 8 to Grade 9,” with information about course codes, levels of study, timetables and tips. The guide can be accessed online. Printed copies are available by emailing [email protected].

For a presentation on “Making the Transition”, tune in to Eastlink Community TV Channel 10 on Monday, January 4, 2021 at 8 pm, Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at 5 pm or Saturday, January 9, 2021 at 5 pm.

Rainbow District School Board’s secondary schools offer exceptional opportunities in arts, athletics and academics, in English and French Immersion, in all program pathways – independent living, work, apprenticeship, college and university.

The Board also has four specialized programs – the Arts Education Program, the Science Technology Education Program (STEP), the Innovative Integrated Technology Program (InIT) and the International Baccalaureate Program (IB). Busing to these programs is offered to students within Greater Sudbury.

Rainbow secondary schools offer Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs in a variety of subject areas. SHSMs are specialized, Ministry of Education approved programs that allow students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). SHSMs assist students in their transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace.

SHSMs are available in 13 sectors: Agriculture, Arts and Culture, Business, Construction, Energy, Environment, Forestry, Health and Wellness, Hospitality and Tourism, Information and Communications Technology, Manufacturing, Mining and Sports. Each SHSM is a bundle of 8 to 10 courses in a selected field. Students learn on the job and can earn valuable industry certifications.

Students gain sector specific skills and knowledge in engaging, career-related learning environments, and prepare in a focused way for graduation and postsecondary education, training or employment.
