Rainbow students invited to become #OzoneHeroes for World Ozone Day

As part of Rainbow District School Board’s monthly environmental challenges, students and staff in Rainbow Schools have been invited to be Ozone Heroes for World Ozone Day.

The ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the sun’s rays, helping to preserve life on the planet.

“World Ozone Day is a fun and educational way for everyone to contribute to the conversation about climate change,” says Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “We all have a part to play in preserving our planet for now and for future generations.”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, a global agreement to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances.

The protocol has helped to address climate change as well as protect human health and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the earth.

The #OzoneHeroes campaign was launched by the UN to celebrate the major accomplishments of the Montreal Protocol. The campaign serves to generate further support for the Protocol and its new mandate to phase down climate-warming hydrofluorocarbons under the Kigali Amendment, adopted in 2016.

The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is September 16, 2017. Rainbow Schools will mark World Ozone Day on Friday, September 15, 2017.
