Rainbow students take part in Technological Skills Competition

Rainbow District School Board will host its 14th annual Technological Skills Competition on Wednesday, February 27th, 2019. The event will take place at Cambrian College in Sudbury and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners Local 2486 in Azilda.

More than 100 secondary school students will test their skills in events including carpentry, welding, TV/video editing, photography, auto-service technology, 2D and 3D character animation, electrical installations, cabinet making and small-powered equipment, prepared speech, auto computer aided design (CAD), mechanical CAD and coding. Students will vie for the opportunity to compete at the Skills Ontario Competition from Monday, May 6th to Wednesday, May 8th, 2019 in Toronto.

As part of the competition, approximately 240 Grade 8 students will visit Cambrian College to explore skilled trades and experiential learning opportunities. Students will participate in a series of hands-on competitions with a focus on technology including rocket launchers, sail design, and new this year, airfoil testing. Participants will also enjoy a robotics demonstration from the Lasalle Secondary School Robotics Team.

“Events in the skilled trades give students an opportunity to problem solve, think creatively and explore career opportunities at an early age,” says Dana Kinsella, Specialist High Skills Major and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Co-ordinator for Rainbow District School Board. “Reaching minds through innovative and challenging learning experiences, and touching hearts by engaging students in activities that fuel their passion support student success.”

Carpentry events, including Home Building – Team of 4 and Carpentry – Team of 2, will take place at the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners Local 2486 in Azilda.

Staff from both venues will provide judges.

Participants will have an opportunity to go home with medals and certificates of achievement to celebrate their success. The awards ceremony will begin at 3 pm at both locations. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.

Rainbow District School Board salutes the many staff members who worked diligently to make this event possible. The Board also acknowledges the generosity of community partners, including the Northeastern Construction Association Board which contributed $2,500. Community partners help to purchase consumable materials for the local competition as well as new tools and transportation for students to compete at the Skills Ontario Competition.
