Reduce the Refuse: Litterless Lunches in Rainbow Schools
For this month’s environmental challenge, Rainbow District School Board is inviting all students and staff to pack a Litterless Lunch on Friday, January 22, 2016.
The “Reduce the Refuse” initiative is part of the Environmental Committee’s ongoing efforts to encourage everyone to adopt sustainable practices.
“Packing lunches in re-usable containers minimizes waste,” says Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “Minimizing waste is good for the community and good for the planet.”
He adds: “We all have a role to play in reducing our environmental footprint and that includes sending less garbage to landfill.”
The Environmental Committee has been issuing monthly challenges to staff and students in Rainbow Schools since the start of the school year.
In September, members of the school staff were invited to bike, take transit, car pool or walk to work on World Car Free Day.
Rainbow Schools held an Eat Local Day in November. Secondary school cafeterias, which are operated by Chartwells, featured a special menu made of locally sourced ingredients.
What will next month’s challenge be?
