Registrations ongoing at the N’Swakamok Alternative School

Indigenous learners 17 years and older can earn free credits towards their high school diploma at Anishinawbek Kinomaadwin Gamig, the N’Swakamok Alternative School, located in the N’Swakamok Indigenous Friendship Centre.
Course material is presented through an Indigenous lens, with credits possible through e-learning, Co-operative Education, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR), and hands-on learning.“Students receive individualized support within a friendly community,” says Principal Heather Downey. “Students also have access to many programs and services including small and large group instruction. Holistic, cultural and land-based activities meet the needs of our Indigenous learners.”

She adds: “Anishinawbek Kinomaadwin Gamig means ‘The place where we learn.’”

Available courses include Math, English, Media, Canadian History, Parenting, Science, Civics, Learning Strategies, Careers, Physical Education, Aboriginal Beliefs and Values and Foods.

Courses are offered on a continuous intake basis from September to May with flexible hours to accommodate varying schedules.
