Reminder: All Vehicles Must Stop for School Bus Flashing Lights to Ensure Student Safety
The Sudbury Student Services Consortium reminds the public that it is mandatory for all vehicles to stop when the red lights are flashing on a school bus, including ATVs, snowmobiles, tractors, and other modes of transportation.
This law is in place to protect the safety of students as they board and exit school buses, particularly when crossing the road.
Safety First
Each school day, the community relies on school buses to transport students safely to and from school. When red lights are flashing, it means students are getting on or off the bus. Failing to stop puts children at risk.
The law applies to all vehicles, including but not limited to:
- Passenger vehicles
- Trucks
- Motorcycles
- All-terrain vehicles (ATVs)
- Bicycles
- Snowmobiles
- Tractors
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Motorists who fail to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights will face significant penalties, including:
- Fines starting at $400 for a first offense, with increased fines for subsequent violations.
- Demerit points added to the driver’s record.
- Potential charges that may lead to court appearances.
A Shared Responsibility
The Sudbury Student Services Consortium works closely with school boards, law enforcement, and communities to ensure students are safe while traveling to and from school. Public cooperation is essential in upholding this shared responsibility. All motorists, regardless of the mode of transportation, must remain vigilant and stop when the red lights are flashing. Thank you for working together to keep students safe.
