School on the Move: Adamsdale receives provincial recognition
The Ministry of Education’s Literacy and Numeracy Sectretariat has selected Adamsdale Public School as a "School on the Move" in recognition of its use of research-based strategies to support continuous improvement in student achievement.
Adamsdale Public School will be profiled in the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat’s Schools on the Move: Lighthouse Program for the 2008-2009 School Year. As a School on the Move, Adamsdale will be reaching out to other schools across Ontario to share its strategies for success. The central theme of the Schools on the Move initiative is schools learning and working together to develop partnerships and networks for student success.
“This is quite an honour and we commend the staff and students of Adamsdale Public School for leading the way,” says Director of Education Jean Hanson. “There has been impressive growth in Primary and Junior reading, writing and math results at Adamsdale Public School. This is a tribute to the school’s strong teaching practices and its focus on each and every student.”
Adamsdale Public School has high expectations for all students based upon their individual abilities. The emphasis is on students’ strengths and the clear determination of performance levels based on Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) results.
Principal Chris Bourré says staff at Adamsdale Public School is enthusiastic about finding exciting new strategies for reaching all students. “Our commitment to shared leadership and collaboration is energizing and our students benefit as a result,” he said. “We are motivated by this achievement and look forward to networking with other schools to improve our practice as we learn together.”
Students at Adamsdale Public School receive large blocks of uninterrupted time for literacy and numeracy. School and student data is reviewed regularly with the purpose of determining goals for students and staff. The school also has a strong character development focus that recognizes the importance of respect, tolerance, friendship and giving back to one another and the community.
According to the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat, “Schools on the Move are exciting places to learn because the teachers and principals have read the research, know what works, and act on their professional know-how. They engage parents and communities, and together they succeed for children. They will be at the heart of a province-wide network motivating and supporting learning in many schools.”
The Schools on the Move: Lighthouse Program was launched in 2006 to celebrate and connect schools that are making significant and sustained progress in student achievement. Adamdsale Public School joins Copper Cliff Public School as a “School on the Move”. Copper Cliff Public School, designated as a “School on the Move” in 2007-2008, will continue in the lighthouse program in the upcoming school year.
