School starts early for youngest learners

At Kindergarten Camp, students Ryden Armstrong, left, and Lennix Glabb, develop their concepts of print and pre-reading skills by engaging with a story book.
School was off to an early start for Rainbow District School Board’s youngest learners.

Close to 435 children beginning school this fall took part in Kindergarten Camp, a four-day program held from August 25 to August 28, 2025.

Under the guidance of qualified teachers and designated early childhood educators, children attended school three hours a day to get a preview of routines and activities.

Children engaged in inquiry-based learning and play, including co-operative games and outdoor activities.

“Kindergarten Camp introduces children to the wonderful experiences that await them,” says Director of Education Bruce Bourget.

He adds: “Children become familiar with staff and surroundings, meet classmates, and get excited about starting school.”

When asked what her favourite Kindergarten Camp activities were, Briar Matheson said, “I like the picture books and matching colours and making friends.”

Amber Malott spent much time at the sensory water table. “The bubbles are soft and squishy, and the toy shark has so many teeth.”

If you have not registered your child for school, there is still time to do so.
