Send off: Lasalle celebrates Lauren Rajala as she heads to Youth Winter Olympics

Lasalle Secondary School hosted a going away party for Lauren Rajala on Monday, January 6, 2020. Lauren is joining Team Canada in curling at the third annual Youth Winter Olympics in Lausanne, Switzerland from January 9 to 22, 2020.

Grade 12 students gathered in the library to surprise their classmate with a send off fit for a celebrated curler – a slide show of images of Lauren curling since the age of 7, video wishes from members of Team Canada, a cake, and a Lancer curling scarf for good luck.

Soon after the celebration, Lauren learned that she had been selected by the Canadian Olympic Committee to lead Team Canada as flag-bearer during the opening ceremony.

“We extend best wishes to Lauren as she embarks on the journey of a lifetime,” says Lasalle Secondary School Principal Maureen McNamara. “This is an exciting time for Lauren and for Lasalle. We will be cheering the team to victory. Go Canada Go!”

Curling out of the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club in Sudbury, Lauren Rajala has garnered incredible success, capturing gold with Team Northern Ontario at the Canadian Under 18 Championships and Team Ontario at the Canada Winter Games.

Earlier this year, Lauren Rajala was inducted into the Greater Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame, in the Chris Sheridan Family Team of the Year category.

Outside of the arena, Lauren Rajala is a three-time Lancer Scholar, maintaining an average of 80 per cent or higher. She was honoured three times as school MVP in curling, and was chosen as the female athlete of the year in Grade 11.

“It’s an honour to be chosen to represent our great country at the Youth Winter Olympics,” said Lauren Rajala. “I’m thrilled to see where this experience takes me as an athlete.”

Joining Lauren in her quest for gold are Jaedon Neuert of Manitoba, Emily Deschenes of Ontario, and Nathan Young of Newfoundland.
