Student from Assiginack Public School attends National Heritage Fair

A Grade 6 student from Assiginack Public School was selected to attend the National HISTOR!CA Heritage Fair this summer. Brett Gauthier will showcase his project entitled “History of Policing on Manitoulin Island” in Ottawa, from July 7th to 13th, 2009.

Two students from Rainbow Schools will also attend the provincial HISTOR!CA Heritage Fair. Logan Wilkinson, a Grade 5 student at MacLeod Public School, will feature a project on The Sudbury Star. Derek Naneff, a Grade 6 student at Carl A. Nesbitt Public School, will feature a project on Kim’s Taekwondo Academy. The Provincial HISTOR!CA Heritage Fair will be held in Ottawa from June 10th to 14th, 2009.

“On behalf of Rainbow District School Board, I would like to congratulate all Heritage Fair participants for bringing the past to life,” said Board Chair Judy Hunda. “Students selected for the provincial and national fairs will enjoy a rich and rewarding learning experience in Ottawa.”

Projects were selected from the Sudbury Regional HISTOR!CA Heritage Fair, which took place at Laurentian University on May 7th and 8th, 2009. Close to 2,400 elementary and secondary school students from Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin attended the two-day exhibition and cultural celebration, making the Sudbury Regional HISTOR!CA Heritage Fair one of the largest in Canada.

Local heritage fairs offer students the opportunity to explore the many aspects of their Canadian heritage in a dynamic learning environment and to present the results of their efforts in a public exhibition. Over the years, student presentations have been as varied as the number of participants, drawing on a variety of creative project formats, including dramatic and musical presentations, videos, posters, maps, essays, and 3-D displays, often with props and costumes.

The Sudbury Regional HISTOR!CA Heritage Fair is a community event organized and sponsored in partnership with a number of local organizations, including the Rainbow District School Board, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, Laurentian University, the City of Greater Sudbury, The Sudbury Star and the Sudbury Multicultural Folk Arts Association.
