Students from Rainbow Schools participate in TEDxYouth@Nickel City

Fifty students from Rainbow Schools will experience Sudbury’s Inaugural TEDxYouth@ NickelCity event. The event takes place in the Cambrian College eDome on Thursday, April 26, 2012 from 9 am to 4 pm.

“We would like to thank the Curator, Suzanne Shawbonquit from Youth Innovation for enabling our students to attend this unique event,” said Rainbow District School Board Director of Education, Norm Blaseg. “Students enrolled in our Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) in Mining and Manufacturing will have an opportunity to experience a global phenomenon at a local level.”

TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) is a set of conferences curated by a non-profit organization devoted to ideas worth spreading. TEDx events are licensed by the TED organization but are independent, local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

“Icons and Innovators” will be the theme for the TEDxYouth@NickelCity event. Creative professionals, technology experts, innovators, entrepreneurs, business and cultural leaders will inspire participants.

The event will feature speakers such as Michael Prosserman, a social entrepreneur, an accomplished break dancer and founder of a youth-led organization called Unity Charity Canada; Dr. Greg Baiden from Penguin ASI Research Centre and his brilliant work in robotics; and Tom Fortin, Owner and Founder of ONTRAK Electronic Systems.

In addition to various speakers, TEDxYouth@NickelCity will have an Innovation Alley, with interactive displays.
