Students participate in Education Day as part of Northern Aboriginal Festival

An Education Day will be held at Tom Davies Square on Monday, October 4th, 2010 from 9:30 am to 3 pm in conjunction with the Northern Aboriginal Festival.

Hundreds of Grade 7 and 8 students from Rainbow Schools and Biidaaban Elementary School will learn more about First Nation, Métis and Inuit history, culture and traditions.

They will also have an opportunity to meet Aboriginal role models and explore local secondary programs and pathways, postsecondary education, work and career options.

Education Day will include a focus on the importance of water in the Anishinaabe culture. All students will participate in a water teaching during the opening event in Council Chambers, following a traditional welcome by the Elders of Cambrian College.

Following the opening, students will attend one of five workshops. They will then have time to explore all the booths that will be set up in the main foyer.  In addition, they will enjoy a fashion show by local designer Tracy Toulouse of Swirling Wind Designs.

Education Day is hosted by Rainbow District School Board, Laurentian University and Cambrian College with funding from the Ministry of Education.
