Students in Rainbow Schools encouraged to volunteer this summer

Grade 8 students in Rainbow Schools are being encouraged to volunteer this summer to get a head start on the 40 hours of community service they need to graduate from secondary school.

“We are highly recommending that students complete at least 10 hours of community service before they begin Grade 9,” says Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board.

He adds: “We are also encouraging secondary students in Rainbow Schools to volunteer. There are many opportunities over the summer months. It not only benefits students, but also benefits community organizations.”

Community involvement helps students develop awareness and understanding of civic responsibility as well as the contributions they can make to support and strengthen the communities in which they live.

Volunteering also gives students an opportunity to explore career options, prepare to enter the workforce, gain valuable work experience, network, build self-esteem and confidence, discover strengths, and develop skills.
